I’ll give just one very small example: I have this huge photo library on my phone and sometimes I need to find a particular photo or receipt from a specific business that I clicked 3-4 years ago. Doing that manually means spending at least 10 mins to 30 mins if I don’t remember the exact month or year I clicked it in. And I used to mostly defer finding the photo as much as I could. Or do it when I was totally bored and nothing to do.
Cue AI: I type the business name or photo description in the search bar and it displays the photo right there. 3 seconds.
Another could be about the Camera app using CV to read live text or numbers. I guess CV and LLMs are specifically going to explode this year as they already have a strong base and proven use case.
Ultimately, human progress happens when they save time.(e.g invention of wheels, cars, airplane, telephone, messaging, internet and now AI)
Eventually no one can prevent AI progress. And any wise person shouldn’t. It is the progress of human specie. And If no one can prevent it, let’s embrace it with open arms and make it happen as quick as possible and advance the world further to solve even bigger problems using these advancements in tech.
Not true. Majority of progress human civilisation made happened in last 100-200 yrs. in the industrial revolution and Information Age. None of them were based upon “magical” concepts but only science, hard work and facts. Infact it has been the most pragmatic time in human history.
We would soon land on Mars within this century, exponentially increasing the chances of survival of human specie in the very long run. Plans already underway for moon as well. All of this would be made possible by people who believe in pure facts and science and not in magical things. I think the “magical believing” phase occurred due to 1) extreme fear of adverse events(floods/volcanoes) or the things unknown to humans (how does it rain? We don’t know. Let’s create a rain god and keep them happy so it doesn’t run erratically. Try that now with Climate change on our head, rain or cold wave patterns won’t change even if 7bn people worship a rain god today). But now that humans know a lot of these answers, the era of scientific truths begun and will continue forever. Would be interesting to see where religion goes in next 50 yrs.
What I fail to understand is, I guess everyone on the dev team of google maps, is actually using the app on almost daily basis. Why can’t they see its flaws, how can they not be passionate to improve something that they themselves use daily and when they are even getting paid to improve it.
This is ripe for a new player to jump in.
A decade ago I used to think how difficult it would be to compete in this world when everyone around me was so smart at what they did. Fast forward, it has never been easier to progress as I see the matrix (sort of).
My experience with de-addiction: I left Facebook long ago(~10yrs), Instagram 1 yr ago, Twitter 1 month ago. No addictions now apart from reading hacker news once a day, TL;DR newsletter and morning brew at EoD.
I can not express in words how good life feels right now. There is just- no noise, absolute clarity and bliss - coupled with workout regime and balanced diet. I feel sad for my friends who can not get rid of those addictions and I know it’s difficult as I’ve experienced first hand. However, once you have left those apps and some time passes, there’s no going back. Instagram really is an addictive app but I have lost the urge to open it now in a year. In contrast, all I see wherever I go is people hooked to their phones and me staring at the utter cognitive chaos in the society today due to these petty apps that have actually disconnected the society the most ever. One should be mindful of what they put inside their body and into their brain as those are only things that stay with us till our last breath.
People have forgotten to enjoy reading fiction on a sunny day. Play with friends and family often. Throw surprises to each other.
Just last week I saw two diff posts on hacker news referencing these two beautiful articles which sum up what I feel:
1. Sam Altman: https://blog.samaltman.com/the-days-are-long-but-the-decades...
2. Paul Graham: http://paulgraham.com/vb.html
Good day!
2. ChatGPT and other LLMs: will take some more time to meaningfully compete with google(as in becoming a noun) and in the mean time they would provide APIs to their models so that large orgs(businesses, scientists etc) can plug it in with their own data and use. They may or may not charge a fee for it.
In both cases there is one big pro and con: Pro: Death of SEO and ads as we know it Con: The model dictates what majority of internet users read, change their views or manipulate. And eventually becomes an AI weapon.
This is easy to solve. Just launch the waste into Space. A typical large reactor produces 25-30 tonnes of used fuel per year. That’ll take one space trip for Falcon 9 to launch it into Space on a trajectory to nowhere. It’ll destroy itself over millions of years or immediately. Either I make no sense at all or why else has no one tried it yet?
How I use them: I wanted a system where there are a number of to-do lists defined by the work area(I would do all tasks in one work area at once).
I used to use Trello before this but the three board format(to do, doing, done) did not work for me as it only took lots of screen space without simplifying things. I basically just wanted a “to-do” and “done” list on top of each other rather than side-by-side
TickTick TickTick has a beautiful app that is very flexible to how you want to organise the tasks. You have boards > which have lists > which have sections > and also have tags. With TickTick I am able to make the list acts as to-do with check boxes and when we check them, they move to the bottom of the list struck-through. This way I am able to put more lists in one single view related to completely different aspects of my work. Every task that I need to do or anything I hear in a meeting that I want to take action on in a few days, I dump it into TickTick. Then I have different board for Work and Personal (and I those boards lots of lists and within lists, sections)
Sorted3 (iOS/Mac only) It’s a mind blowing time-boxing app where you can schedule your day to the minute. This way I get more done in less time. And then I chill! How I use it: First I mark every task I am going to do tomorrow as “tomorrow” in TickTick. Then I have created a iOS shortcut called “Plan Tomorrow” which brings all those TickTick tasks into Sorted where I assign them a time of the day/sequence while mostly using the auto-schedule feature. And I have the Sorted3 widget on Home Screen so I see all day what’s next and stay motivated to see the work ending much sooner. I have never paid for any app in life but this app compelled me to since it solves a problem no one else could and in an elegant and user friendly way.
RemNote: For storing knowledge for long term use. It’s a knowledge management system that actually works. I never get confused or looking for old info as I have it organised in there.
