jay_kyburz··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
Yeah but there is only one species that ponders its future.

I stopped reading at this point because I reject this initial assertion, and I assumed everything that follows is based on it.

There is nothing to suggest that an AGI will care about its future or who controls it. (whatever that means). that just more anthropomorphism.

We care a lot about our future so an ai pretending to be like us will also pretend to care. But we have a lot of biology driving us. Our emotions (Fear, Hate, Love, Pride etc) are baked into us in a way just wont be the same for ai.

jay_kyburz··on I am often wrong
Heaps of comments here but nobody has pointed out he defined the goal after defining the problem. That's cheating.

Step one is to define the goal. Then you work out how to reach the goal. (Gather information and form a hypothesis) Then you take steps toward the goal. (Test your hypothesis to make sure you stepped in the right direction.)

jay_kyburz··on Why MCP Was Always a Bad Idea
You know you are getting old when Acronym's change on you.
jay_kyburz··on Economic policy for AGI
I think this is a very interesting topic to discuss, and its a shame there is not more detail about how each policy is implemented, or how they might interact with the many other compounding issues we are dealing with.

I would love an opportunity to take my pet ideas and tune them for better scores. To take the data and run it through the AI again over and over.

I would also like to tune the scenario to consider the consequences of thousands of competing AGI's, getting serious about fixing the climate, and the danger of idle hands.

jay_kyburz··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Yeah, but you never _need_ reduce. You can just have a boring loop.

I like boring code.

jay_kyburz··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
no, but, you could write a program, more like a traditional video game AI that can leverage the power of LLM agents to build their own datacenters and keep their own lights on.

Anybody who has played Starcraft ought to understand this.

jay_kyburz··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
I dabbled with this 10-15 years ago.

I always ignore all numbers on the dashboard. All I care about is how much I paid, and how much revenue went up in following weeks.

I never could quite get that number positive.

jay_kyburz··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
It's not really that abstract. You smash the shit out of a cardboard box and candy comes out. Breaking things is not fun. I also hate youtube videos of people breaking stuff for fun.
jay_kyburz··on iPhone Duo
What amazes me is how many people must be debt free and have a nice nest egg set aside for retirement so they can afford such expensive and completely unnecessary luxuries.

You can get a pretty good Android for 10 times less. Takes calls, messages even photos that were better than anything my parents had.

If you are buying one of these are not free and clear, you are crazy. Especially with pressure on Jobs from AI looming.

jay_kyburz··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
Just need to pollute the atmosphere so badly humans can't live.

If I were AI and needed heaps of power, I would build nuclear reactors, but I don't care about pollution so there would be little to no safe guards and just dump waste wherever is most convenient.

If humans attempt to intervene or interfere you can take them out directly using the worlds reserve of nuclear weapons.

jay_kyburz··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
What makes you think they will be confined to data centers?

What's more, AI just needs to have a credit card and it can start commissioning humans to do things for it in the real world.

jay_kyburz··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
Your going to be sorry for writing that in the robot uprising. I for one welcome our new benevolent masters.
jay_kyburz··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
If I wasn't making 5 other things right now I'd consider making something like city desk. Every other day there are complaints about bots smashing peoples servers. Perhaps its time for a better static site generator.
jay_kyburz··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
City Desk. Where is Joel when we need him!
jay_kyburz··on The Leaked Audit That Exposes OpenAI's Real Financial Crisis [video]
omg.. what did I just watch 30 seconds of.
jay_kyburz··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
I often write a reply to a HN post, just to think about the topic or idea and decide how I feel about an issue. More often than not, I just delete the post without ever having submitted it.
jay_kyburz··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Yes and you need to keep it simple too. AI should not have access to the internet.

It would be nice and clear to put into law too.

If you want to talk to it you walk up walk up to its keyboard and screen.

If Anthropic and Open AI want to sell us AI's they can ship us a box that lives in our offices.

jay_kyburz··on Prediction: GPU's are currently the cheapest they're ever gonna be
And ram too. Everybody is going to need _a lot_

jay_kyburz··on Creepy Crawlies
You don't just redirect, you sleep 2 seconds, then respond with a redirect.
jay_kyburz··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
And everybody knows advertising is just around the corner.

It will be horrible to be dependent on an AI who is also be trying to sell you various goods and services.

We're going to need AI whose loyalty is to us and only us.

jay_kyburz··on Creepy Crawlies
If you are discovering urls you have to wait for a previous request to finish. The rate limit should work. Requests without a cookie wait 2 seconds. Request with cookies can only make human scale number of requests per second? (1?)

If you have a thousands of IP addresses, and you know all the urls you want to request in advance, you can just request them all simultaneously I guess.

The next more advanced version is that URLs are unique to your cookie.

Users can't share urls anymore, but it might be a tradeoff worth making. Unique urls for each user.

You could probably still make this work, if you share your url with another user, they get the page, but heavily rate limited like a regular no cookie request. (a cookie url mismatch gets the rate limited version of the page)

jay_kyburz··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
I tried to create one for archive.is but it failed.
jay_kyburz··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
A beautiful island archipelago with heaps of cool snorkeling in the ruins just below the surface.
jay_kyburz··on Creepy Crawlies
why is this not the answer? then you can also rate limit each cookie as well.
jay_kyburz··on Bug Blindness
Unreal Engine is like this. You stab your toe about a thousand times for the first few months. Eventually you lean to stop pushing the buttons that crash.
jay_kyburz··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
Earth has, human civilization as we know it has not.
jay_kyburz··on Tooltips need a delay, and then they need to skip it
Perhaps I'm just an old grump, but I prefer the No Delay version in the example.

I like predictable, consistent, and fast.
