jay3ss··on Major government surveillance revelations fail to make a big splash
> It was clear that Trump was not in control of the surveillance state: it was working against him

> because of his [Biden's] mental condition

Can you please expand on these?

jay3ss··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2022)
Is there a way to view the posting without logging in?
jay3ss··on How to build my own information feed / front page?
> I'm not a developer, so looking for 3rd party solutions that are basically plug and play

I think that writing an API might not be an option for OP

jay3ss··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
I didn't know about the verbatim search. I'm going to give it a try, thanks
jay3ss··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
Is this the same as enclosing the terms in quotes and using the !g bang?
jay3ss··on Aphantasia
> sometimes the entire dream is music

What does this mean?

jay3ss··on Things you are allowed to do, academic edition
Thanks for sharing. I used to enjoy writing but could never find the motivation to put pen to paper and instead read other's stories. I look forward to reading some of your work
jay3ss··on Things you are allowed to do, academic edition
What genre of fiction do you typically write? Anything publicly available?
jay3ss··on YouTube takes down independent court livestreams

Thanks!

jay3ss··on There may be a steep privacy cost if you park here
This is an awful, consumer hostile trend. I have a Bose sound bar that requires an app, account, and internet and blue tooth connection just to change the settings. Luckily it has a remote so I can use it without any of those things, but it can only change the volume and power the device on/off. I only kept it because the sound is good and it was a gift.
jay3ss··on Yann LeCun’s 2021 Deep Learning Course at CDS free and fully online
This looks great
jay3ss··on Vizio makes more money spying on people who buy TVs than TVs themselves
This is my solution, although it sometimes feels like playing a game of Whack-A-Mole
jay3ss··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
It did not go well on Reddit either

jay3ss··on Ask HN: Starting a career as a programmer in my mid-40s
Granted I'm no JS expert, but I believe that Python would be a better fit for OP due to the larger number of scientific computing libraries and OP's background as a mechanical engineer in addition to what you just mentioned. Someone else advised that OP leverage their ME background to help them learn programming, which IMO Python is very well suited for
jay3ss··on Ask HN: Coping with cancer in the family
Thanks for reminding me about it. As soon as I saw your comment my mind immediately jumped to it
jay3ss··on Ask HN: Coping with cancer in the family
Sounds very similar to this article[0]. This article helped me understand how to relate with people who are going through a rough situation.

jay3ss··on Physics Student Earns PhD at Age 89
I know of one person who worked part time in industry while obtaining a PhD (also part time) from a major university in the southern California region and another who is currently doing the same at a different major university in the same region. Both people were working for a very large, Fortune 200 company. At the time they were in their mid 20s but I was offered a similar path (I'm in my 30s), but I've since left the company

jay3ss··on Fourier Series Visualisation with D3
Just watched your video on Voronoi diagrams, Delaunay triangulations, and natural neighbor interpolation. Great stuff. Please keep it up
jay3ss··on Tech Interview Handbook
I know of a company that requires (or at least did a few years ago when I interviewed with them) new grads to have a GPA in of at least 3.0 out 4.0 to even be considered for the position (US-based aerospace company). A classmate of mine had circumstances (mostly out of their control) that caused their GPA to be lower than the threshold so they couldn't hire them despite them having glowing recommendations from current, highly respected employees. The hiring manager wanted to hire them but couldn't. So they were brought in as an intern and was hired as an "internal hire" in order to bypass the hard GPA requirement.
jay3ss··on It appears that Reddit is forcing me to use their app to see deep linked content
If you're using Firefox on the desktop you can try out an extension that I wrote that allows you to change the version of reddit instead of changing the subdomain manually. I used it extensively on mobile but a couple of updates ago they only allow reviewed extensions to be installed.

jay3ss··on Linux on Chromebooks just might get me through a masters in computer science
You're absolutely right. My main driver is a Linux machine which isn't compatible with Honorlock. I'm very lucky to have inherited another laptop that is compatible.
jay3ss··on All the best engineering advice I stole from non-technical people (2019)
That didn't work for me. Going to incognito mode worked, but it's very annoying to have to do these workarounds, even if they are minor
jay3ss··on PID Controller: A Simple Control Loop Mechanism
From what I can recall from my optimal controls course using on/off is actually an optimal controller.

Edit: It's called a bang-bang controller [0]

jay3ss··on Tune Your PID Controller
That is the fun part of building things. The novel application of traditional tools can often have surprising results.

> PIDs have been a remarkably versatile hammer for lots of things that aren't nails.

Love it

jay3ss··on The media's lab leak fiasco
> Making an unsupported accusation that turns out to be correct doesn't mean it was right to make the accusation at that time

I agree with this and thanks for expressing what I was thinking, but didn't really know how to say it

jay3ss··on Tune Your PID Controller
This is fantastic and (from my POV) out of the box. I've only ever seen control theory used with cloth animation from some Pixar research papers I've skimmed so this really neat to see another application of controls in animation.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work
