jaxondu··on 2016 JavaScript Rising Stars
Two factors why VueJS is popular: 1. It is adopted by PHP Laravel communities as the goto framework for frontend 2. It is adopted as underlying for Weex framework (similar to React Native) by Alibaba. Which makes it adopted fast by developers in China.
jaxondu··on Apple’s culture of secrecy wore down Swift creator and Xcode lead Chris Lattner
I also not convinced. Chris was with Apple for more than a decade. He must have adapted to the secrecy culture after so many years.
jaxondu··on Ask HN: How often is hardware at the big tech companies refreshed?
If the company own the hardware and is a capital expense, then it depends on the accounting policy. Most will depreciate over 3 years I think.
jaxondu··on I returned my 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
For Apple the TouchBar model is selling well. So I predict by the end of the year all MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks are TouchBar only. No option for physical function key model. And they will kill MacBook Air
jaxondu··on Apple cuts Tim Cook's pay 15% for missing sales goals
I think Apple considered TouchBar innovative, but it's not a product. I keep having the vision of Tom Cruise in Minority Report, while navigating the screen with his fingers, keep looking down at his keyboard/TouchBar for emojis.
jaxondu··on Apple cuts Tim Cook's pay 15% for missing sales goals
I think its coming this year. Few signs: 1. Surface range of notebook is doing well. 2. Latest Snapdragon 835 is compatible with Windows 10. 3. I've seen somewhere MS said or demoed plugging in Windows Phone to an LCD and run the full desktop version of MS Office apps.
jaxondu··on Apple cuts Tim Cook's pay 15% for missing sales goals
> Apple had Siri out and was in the lead with voice control, then they wasted it.

Just ask "Who's the next President of the United States of America." OK Google gets it. Siri shows you a list of web/wiki articles.

jaxondu··on A new generation of Chromebooks, designed to work with millions of apps
How about one with Snapdragon 835 which is compatible with Windows 10? Maybe soon multiboot to ChromeOS, Windows and Ubuntu will be real.
jaxondu··on Google reveals secret test of AI bot to beat top Go players
Really hope to see one machine against another. In future we'd probably have game tournament of AI machines. Example my tensorflow-build machine against your openai-build machine in a StarCraft game.
jaxondu··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
I suspect Apple will continue downhill in 2017 especially in Asia markets. The so called iPhone 8 10-anniversary phone brand new design is never gonna happen. Instead we will get iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus with the same design but with an OLED screen. The reason is Tim Cook is in charge, he is a supply chain guy. And Apple is going to squeeze out all profit possible from the investments in iPhone 6/6s/7/7s design, by reusing the same factory retrofitting. Its about profit margin. If Apple continue to reuse the same 4 year old design, it will start to loose its appeal as a fashion accessory, to the younger crowd.
jaxondu··on Ask HN: Why you choose Mac over Windows/Linux?
Because it is the only way to run Xcode and iOS Simulator for iOS app development/testing.
jaxondu··on Ask HN: Domain name purchase: godaddy vs. route53?
I use Namecheap as my domain name registrar and use Route53 as DNS Server. I'll never use godaddy.
jaxondu··on Saudi Arabia adopts the Gregorian calendar
Is there a command to list countries that are still not on Gregorian?
jaxondu··on How Apple Alienated Mac Loyalists
> Fix the battery issue.

I don't think there is any hardware/software issues for the poor battery performance in latest MacBook Pro. The TouchBar uses AppleWatch CPU under the hood, and anything with a screen will suck up battery rather badly. They might be able to squeeze some more juice by software update. Its likely noticeable improvement will come with the refresh next year. The one thing Apple needs to do is the price. Many are pissed that they pay so much premium but get worst battery performance than last year model.

jaxondu··on Tim Cook assures employees that Apple is committed to the Mac
Looks like damage control by CEO. There wouldn't be so much backslash towards latest MacBookPro if Apple were to keep all Mac models on annual refresh.
jaxondu··on Ask HN: Will you hope S3 become a real file system?
I hope S3 will stay the same and get cheaper each years. It is meant to be the foundation. That's why you have Dropbox built on top of it.
jaxondu··on Start building Actions on Google
> I expect Microsoft and Apple follow suit.

Apple already has SiriKit since iOS 10. I believe you can order an Uber ride with Siri, never tried, I don't use Siri.

jaxondu··on Amazon seller’s account suspended after changing profile name on Kindle Fire
You can create a Google account without a Gmail account. Look for the link "I prefer to use my current email address" when creating a Google account.
jaxondu··on PouchDB, the JavaScript Database That Syncs
1. Realm on the server/sync is closed beta at the moment. It's not ready. 2. Realms design does not gel well if you use Redux architecture.
jaxondu··on Uber Now Tracks Passengers’ Locations Even After They’re Dropped Off
If only need 5 mins after the trip, Uber is in strong position as large user to work with Apple on how to extend the existing background API to cover its use case.
jaxondu··on Windows on New Macbook Pro Permanently Damages Speaker Due to Poor Drivers
I suspect they hit similar issues with the delayed AirPods, easy for software to blow the speaker off. Maybe Tim Cook finally took a look at these issues with the new MacBook Pro before its launch and decided to kill its car project. Joke aside, I think 2017 will be tough year for Apple, as it is likely we will see a Made In USA iPhone, which will either eat into its profit margin or many will finally realise iPhone is way overpriced. 2017 will likely hit recession for US and globally, judging from history which happens the year when US political power shift from Republican to Democrat or vice versa. This will made no-buy for many for the 10th anniversary new iPhone 8.

Worst off, Apple is likely to create a third iPhone model which is highest end, premium and meant to milk more cash. Apple still think all its fanboy can tolerate its strategy of high profit from RAM add ons. It is likely due to political thingy the next 4 years will make Apple hard sell to convince users that iCloud is safe.

TouchBar and Retina ID is making the MacBook Pro hardware more complex. But how long will finger print tech last before the next tech take over? They are making something that is not applicable for other Mac models such as iMac (so you build a TouchID panel on the side of the screen?), Mac Pro and Mac mini. I believe Apple is retiring Mac Pro and Mac mini next, but will need to keep iMac due to sale volume. Someone please tell me how feasible it is to implement Touch ID on external keyboard? This whole thing does not look like holistic design to me, something like how you need to turn back the Apple MagicMouse in order to charge.

Which top tier computer manufacturer other than Apple is selling 3 year old computer hardware? I hope Apple will never use the word 'magic' in their ads anymore. I hope Apple has the courage to adopt USB-C for its iPad and iPhone. I hope Google will lower Pixel by $200 dollars. I hope Google will develop its own Linux notebook for its own employees and then the rest of the world. I hope Microsoft will develop a version of Windows on top of Linux core and file systems. Or the Surface group just buy Canonical. I hope Facebook will have an App Store for us to run React Native app or something like WeChat mini app over the web.

jaxondu··on The void left by Apple
Many would agreed that the new MacBook Pro is overpriced. With its hugh profit margin, hardly anyone complain that iPhone is overpriced.
jaxondu··on The void left by Apple
2 other areas for Apple to boost SW: AppStore backend seems inflexible to change (why can't I buy AppleTV apps from iPhone?). And Siri is going downhill with each iOS releases (I think should be the competitors are gaining much more with each iOS releases).
jaxondu··on New XPS 13 Developer Edition Lands in Europe, United States and Canada
Wondering if there is an awesome list of sanction notebooks used by startups/tech companies? i.e. approved notebook brand and models to be purchased for employee.
jaxondu··on The new MacBook Pro is kind of great for hackers
Great move. Keep hearing from forums, reddit small issues here and there for this first-gen notebook. Looks like many others are paying premium to Apple to be their beta testers. Really hope Apple release non-touch bar version in parallel for future refresh.
jaxondu··on Apple Abandons Development of Wireless Routers
We will know for sure by WWDC 2017 as the next macOS will have a brand new file system, which necessitate major rewrite of Time Machine backup software. I think Apple wants to kill Time Capsule but Time Machine is one major selling point of macOS. So likely we'll get Time Machine for iCloud or Apple partners with NAS vendor Synology etc to support Mac backup.
jaxondu··on Microsoft planning to enable x86 on ARM64 emulation in Windows 10 by Fall 2017
Remind me Microsoft is on a Frankenstein streaks lately, merging tablet touch with desktop, mixing Linux terminal inside Windows and this.
jaxondu··on Let’s replace Twitter with something much better
Maybe a modern Usenet? Any idea what are the pain points of Usenet?
jaxondu··on Microsoft Becomes Linux Foundation Platinum Member
Is there a possibility that MS buy Canonical/Ubuntu?
jaxondu··on Firebase gets better analytics, crash reporting and more
Any idea what are the alternatives? Dont see similar offerings from AWS or Azure.

One minus point for Firebase is its Android SDK relies on the availability of Google Play services. Most of Android phones in China has no Google Play. So apps can not run even when you do not utilize any of Google Play services. In addition, there is no official words that you can use Firebase services within the great China firewall. It's better to look elsewhere if you have China market in mind.
