java_script··on Ask HN: What are the real advantages of SPAs?
Soundcloud was built as a SPA so you can keep your music playing as you navigate.

I wish MyFitnessPal was a SPA in places so I could click checkboxes and paginate the food catalogue at the same time when adding food to my diary.

Nearly everywhere else, IMO, no. SPAs are absolutely harder to build and people start with them by default because everyone wants to be Facebook, which your average CRUD site is not. You can pull in those fancy javascript features as you need them, and hell, even embed React in the one part of your site that truly needs it. Which is what React begs people to do on their website, but apparently people read that and say to themselves "That message is probably for the plebeians building a Todo list app or something. I'M building Todo++ Enhanced, so I'll probably need 40 layers of abstraction and about a gig of dependences to implement a form."

Your wish has been granted. 2019 is the year of YAML as a serialization format and the return of CoffeeScript.

java_script··on Why Not to Use Quora
Holy shit I just logged in for the first time in years and on my homepage was pretty much that. No life stories but way more than 40 answers.

java_script··on Podcast Advertising: What We Learned
Hands down, I've never heard anyone do ads better than Cum Town[0] (seriously). Sometimes the reads end up being upwards of 15 min & in the middle of the show but nobody skips them. In fact in live shows the crowd will cheer when an ad read starts.

The trick is they have extremely tolerant advertisers who don't mind being basically slandered every ad read, having the promo codes and discounts read wrong, having the "don't read this part out loud" parts read on accident, etc.

Close 2nd is Hollywood Handbook, who also shits on advertisers and leads to their ad reads being the most listened to clips of the show. For example when Cards Against Humanity told them to say whatever they want [1].

java_script··on A Guide to Statistics on Historical Trends in Income Inequality
They think you can take Capital and search/replace 'money' for 'privilege points' and it's what the left believes now. I'm paraphrasing but I see this point made over and over again. James Damore did it in his Google Memo...
java_script··on A Guide to Statistics on Historical Trends in Income Inequality
Thanks. People keep getting mad at my jokes though (I'm on thin ice with dang) so I wanted to contribute a little bit more.

e: Oh shit I just realized who I'm replying to. Serious answer time. Socialism will be a disruptive new paradigm for start-ups and other businesses where (following the idea of a meritocracy) workers, and not stuffy old capitalists, each own an equal number of shares at their place of work. And even more innovative in structure than Zappos and Valve, it allows for capital investment decisions to be voted on by individual contributors, throwing away traditional management structures you see at crufty old firms. Pretty cool stuff! According to some dusty old theories it's the "Exit Strategy" for our largest firms.

java_script··on Amazon's Ring Police Portal For Mass Surveillance
Ah, good thing users can deny the request. American police are famous for their willingness to take no for an answer (insert world's biggest "/s").
java_script··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
When a site has a redesign nowadays, I can almost always count on them breaking "Open Link in new Tab". Most recent example was Chase bank and I think Google's account security page. Same with a redesign project I just joined at work....
java_script··on Words Matter – Moving Beyond “Meritocracy”
...I can’t answer that because I’m not one those people saying that.

Also answering a question with a question is an evasion technique. Just say what you believe, and don’t drill me on stuff other people said.

java_script··on Words Matter – Moving Beyond “Meritocracy”
1. I named my cat “Nigger Man” after the cat in that HP Lovecraft story and people got really mad at me. I’m glad that things are going well for Adolph and hopefully one day my cat “N-man” (as I call him in public now) can be afforded the same respect.

2. Also I’m sorry for saying that words are a communication medium that carry different meaning to different humans. I now realize that they’re just bytes in a computer.

java_script··on Words Matter – Moving Beyond “Meritocracy”
Ok fair. Then would they be wrong to associate you with those groups? Ie in the debates those ‘groups’ tend to wage, do you fall on their side?
java_script··on Words Matter – Moving Beyond “Meritocracy”
No it’s more akin to black lives matter not allowing themselves to say “all lives matter”. Fine in a vacuum, but the phrase has become loaded by the opposition, which Mozilla mentions in TFA.
java_script··on Words Matter – Moving Beyond “Meritocracy”
> Are you saying that women should not be in positions of power?

Nah he just cares about ethics in open source software ;)

(In case you’re unaware, there are alt-right/whatever they call themselves nowadays websites that have an “open source software culture” section where they fume over stuff like this and rush comment sections together. This person isn’t arguing in good faith and if you want to get to the bottom of anything, ask him instead what ethnicities should be in charge of software orgs. He probably has a paragraph to copy paste you)

java_script··on Amazon raises minimum wage to $15 for all US employees
Call me cynical, but they did this shortly after sending out anti-unionization propaganda videos to managers of Whole Foods. If it really is a reaction to union agitation, then it's not Amazon corporate that we should be praising for this increase.
java_script··on Amazon raises minimum wage to $15 for all US employees
> I think they should be allowed to do whatever they think is best for them.

I think they should be allowed to vote and agitate for whatever they think is best for them. And thus.... viola, minimum wage and subsequent increases.

Although I know majorities are a touchy subject with libertarians since there are like six of you total nowadays.

java_script··on Google’s first all-hands after 2016 election [video]
Wow so her ICE quote would've been 100% correct if not for the word "required" (evidenced by what Politifact ends up admitting in the body of the article).

Is there a rating worse than "Pants On Fire" we could brand this liar with?

(I don't know about sexist but the media sure is dumb and pedantic as shit.)

Thank God there's none of that happening.

java_script··on The US has spent $1.5 trillion on war since Sept 11 attacks
Look how patriotic Democrats (and I don't have to mention, #resist Republicans) get all of a sudden when Trump seems a bit too friendly to North Korea or Russia. Or the echoes of "We have to do something!" that popped up about Syria. It seems for the political class its literally impossible to learn anything. Or that they don't actually regret Iraq, it's just in vogue to do so.
java_script··on Tesla workers speak out: 'Anything pro-union is shut down really fast'
If I were a shareholder I'd advise Elon to do something truly epic to distract from this. Like what if instead of the rainbow road easter egg they added a bacon road?
java_script··on OxyContin billionaire has patented a drug to wean addicts from opioids
Slippery slope. Reminds me of that one poem.

“First they came for the big pharma capitalists that caused opioid epidemic, and I did not speak up because I was not a big pharma capitalist that caused the opioid epidemic.” Etc.

What if I work real hard and become one of those guys one day. I don’t wanna get executed.

java_script··on What is this Twitter army of Amazon drones cheerfully defending warehouse work?
A funny memory is how the right-wing mocked this article relentlessly, before Jeff Bezos was bad in their minds. I can't wait for Alex Jones et al to become advocates for warehouse workers all of a sudden.
java_script··on Privatizing Poverty
Not even just the Supreme Court. Federal judgeships are being handed out left and right to (often unqualified but ideological) members of the Federalist Society. It's probably the biggest thing that Trump will have done that'll affect us our entire lifetimes.
