jaunkst··on Anti-If: The missing patterns (2016)
Dynamic combinators can compose logic without if statements or switches.

Imagine a combinator that takes an array of curried functions that are composed from a filter or reducer. No if statement needed if you can dynamicly compose a functional pipe

jaunkst··on Show HN: My embarrassing personal website from the 90s
Wow, love it. Mine was terrible too. I eventually got into some pretty crazy website designs that were completely an expression of art and UX experiments. We had a sort of underground network of other similar websites that gave a since of community.
jaunkst··on Single Page Application Is Not a Silver Bullet
When you need an SPA it’s great. JQuery noodles are a past time and I’m not going back. If you need a blog or something just render it all sever-side and sprinkle some JS.

jaunkst··on The Cajun Navy and the Vigilante Future of Disaster Relief
The truth is when it comes to life or death situations you cannot always wait for an official response to the incident. Especially in large scale disasters where the local government is not capable or disabled from responding with the speed or scale that is demanded to save lives.

So there is no reason as to 'why' they are being bricked. They just are doing it for the money?
jaunkst··on White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID
The risk is ONLINE..
jaunkst··on White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID
It doesn't but it would be more ideal to have a decentralized identification system.
jaunkst··on White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID
Private / Public Key Identification needs to be revisionable. Public keys need to be accessible. In the case of a breach new keys should be generated against some sort of public / private block chain. When a enitity requires your data they should be granted a revocable public key to it. If there is a breach we generate a new pair and the private key is stored on a sort of IIA server, and a new key is immutably added to the person. Or something more.
jaunkst··on White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID
Sure, but a public key could still be stored in the case of a security audit. And I don’t think the majority of mass breaching are on the paper level. We need a solution to allow a new revision of an identity to be issued, possible something block chain like.
jaunkst··on More Americans Are Falling Behind on Student Loans, and Nobody Quite Knows Why
All good points, but the only real answer is... Paying for an education is a gamble and gambling with our future is dumb. If we pay taxes for anything, anything at all the number 1 priority should be to provide an education to anyone. That doesn't mean pay for their housing, or anything else. One has to invest their time into an education, its already very expensive.

So a script practically set up the machine with the nuclear football by default, and then you where expected to diffuse it before using it. That is not your fault.

jaunkst··on Every Version of Voxel Quest
Maybe allow others to contribute on a private repo. I love this project and I also am having a hard time with my personal projects but when I do I would love to contribute to this, as I am sure many other skilled developers would be. Just a thought. Open source would be great but even private election could get you to a release and fit your business model sooner.
jaunkst··on An External Replication on the Effects of Test-driven Development [pdf]
TDD is king when refactoring, or proving an algorithm. You have a tests to confirm the output, and near realtime feedback that you assumptions are correct. The rest is obvious. Mission critical component TDD, complicated refactor TDD, algorithm you need to validated TDD. Anything else write the code and get a peer review.
jaunkst··on Taking PHP Seriously
Products fail. Languages solve problems. Business domains have different problems. PHP won't solve a telecommunication challenge at scale. I believe in polyglot development. Choose the language and framework that suits the challenge. Not all shoes fit.

jaunkst··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
Its very, opinionated. It has to be! (for now)

I can agree with almost every opinion in the comments, almost everyone is right. But with a strong opinion and a strong mental model there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The future is bright for web applications, and almost everyone in the space is aware of the biggest issues, which is important as the browsers adapt new features to help ease the pain.

Web development is a scary place but it can be enjoyable when the right pieces are in place. Older web applications have crazy hacks and made up anti-patterns to solve problems, which mix context between the client and the server making it a nightmare to wrap your head around or even implement new features.

Often a new feature in such application guides the developer to accept the fate of adding more technical debt, and creates a strong desire for a better way with no way out without a major overhaul of the backend and frontend. I have spent countless hours building patches to older systems just to prepare them for the option of pivoting to more modern approaches.

Today web application development is a fast moving target. Design patterns are changing from framework to framework. Even from framework version to version. i.e Angular 2.

It's almost as if the current state of frontend development is very comb shaped. broad in approaches, and that the community is digging deep into patterns that are showing success in scaling, and performance. We have to deal with various topics, the lack of concurrency, performance of the DOM, managing scope, and state.

I have a few opinionated methodologies to help me in modern web development.

1. Pick a strong frontend and backend frameworks and know them well.

2. Don't mix the backend and the frontend code. Keep the backend API in context to the business domain, data validation, and security. Allow the client to be an independent consumer of the API for portability and scalable distribution.

3. Keep your JSON responses as flat as possible, and avoid deeply nested data structures. Rely on functional programming to map and reduce your data on the client into deeply nested structures if needed.

4. Decide what the client can compute for free computation cycles.

5. Stay as data-driven as possible. Fall back to the server or micro-service if the client is not efficient at a demanding task.

6. Choose libraries with the least restraints and high flexiblity. They should not obfuscate or complicate your ability to implement the design. I find most libraries can assume to much control.

We are in a better place today then we have ever been for web applications. Though the learning curve is intense and the subjects broad. Especially for fullstack developers. I feel that finding what works and an opinion of how it should be done is important.

I am less picky about the backend technolgies as I am with the frontend. I would really only consider Angular, or React for my frontend. Both Angular and React expect you to form a mental model of how they work, and what a build pipeline should look like which is very project specific in my experience.

Its the wild west our here, and expect things to continue to change. Building an opinion, vetting new libraries to add to your toolbox, and experimenting is just part of the web application world.

Love it. One question, does the bacteria once it has conquered the known world does it begin to traverse backwards into the previous sectors?
jaunkst··on Why Do Tourists Visit Ancient Ruins Everywhere Except the United States?
I often spent time in New Mexico to visit family as a child and we would often find unmarked sites of Indian culture. I found them to be absolutely wonderful. Some where marked with little flags noting sites. I have never been to a place more exposed and ready for discovery in my entire life. Most place I have lived are overgrown and their secrets even more hidden. Getting to the point though, I feel that the most Americans have the perspective that cultured, and ancient sites are beyond America. America is something new and the rest of the world is older and more cultured. Sadly, we have hidden a lot of the culture and history that existed here before our country. We are not the same a civilizations that has been rooted in the land like China. They have 3,500 years of written continuous history. Our tourism in America is and has always been Westernized, not a continuation of something old but an idea of something new.
