jaspergilley··on CoV–2 Spike Impairs DNA Damage Repair – Inhibits V(D)J Recombination in Vitro
User @shusaku refers to MDPI as a "garbage journal". If true, this info should play a bigger part in the discussion here than it currently is
jaspergilley··on YouTube deletes rapper's 'Let's Go Brandon' song claiming medical misinformation
That's such a nihilistic false equivalence. Get a subscription to The Economist - their business model disincentivizes manipulation
jaspergilley··on Moderna Vaccine Significantly More Effective Against Delta Variant Than Pfizer
Wait, was your combo shot one of each? or two of each? I've been curious to learn more about getting both (already had two Pfizer) but resources on the matter are hard to find
jaspergilley··on Ask HN: Self Promotion on Reddit
This may sound unhelpful, but if you have good enough organic growth somebody may post it in the subreddit (and many other places) without your prompting
jaspergilley··on Popular Pirate Sites ‘Disappear’ from DuckDuckGo’s Top Search Results
Most likely, if you're posting on HN, you're probably at least OK at critical thinking
jaspergilley··on Google Widevine Content Decryption Module DMCA
This inspired me to research and download Brave Browser. Thanks Streisand Effect! So nice to have a browser that doesn't feel like bloatware
jaspergilley··on Google Widevine Content Decryption Module DMCA
Super interesting, thanks for posting
jaspergilley··on Ableton Live 11
No, you'd end up with Fruity Loops
jaspergilley··on Vigil: The eternal morally vigilant programming language
I think this is a joke? Hopefully?
jaspergilley··on About iSH’s pending removal from the App Store
Can confirm it does
jaspergilley··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
Well...Linux plus rootkit preventing you from doing what you want on a device you've paid for
jaspergilley··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
God, I hope so. I've been meaning to try the PinePhone and maybe others at some point
jaspergilley··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
Jesus, I had no idea. Remind me to never, ever switch to Android
jaspergilley··on 750M genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida
To the geniuses protesting this: they're combating an invasive species. How's that for un-natural?
jaspergilley··on New youtube-dl release: v2020.11.01.1
I've never ever heard of this happening. I feel like there's almost no chance this isn't just bluster
jaspergilley··on Photos from inside a Typhoon class submarine
Not nearly as nice as The Hunt For Red October makes it out to be
jaspergilley··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
In light of this DMCA, this seems like a site that needs to exist...but I don't know of one? Seems like as trivial a build as anything cryptographic actually
jaspergilley··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
Ok, so who's building a distributed, cryptographic, uncensorable version of GitHub?
jaspergilley··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
You can download the most recent version of the YouTube-DL code from Wayback Machine here: https://web.archive.org/web/20201018144703/https://github.co...

Fuck the RIAA

jaspergilley··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
Why wouldn't it be? Does this claim have any substance?
jaspergilley··on Google to Invest $10B in India
The Google Belt and Road Initiative
jaspergilley··on Saturn's largest moon may be the only place beyond Earth where humans could live
This article projects too linearly to the future: terraforming Mars, for instance, would probably be easier right now than getting people to Titan quickly. Seems like an article written for the purpose of getting clicks by being contrarian, not seriously investigating the science
jaspergilley··on Creating Python Virtual Environments with Conda: Why and How
Or, if you actually know how to use the Unix command line in non-trivial ways, you can just use pip.
jaspergilley··on Show HN: DevShop, the Game of Kanban
Delightful. Add in some snazzy animations and it'll be downright addicting
jaspergilley··on Apple Removes HKmap.live from the App Store
Part of the problem when phones are inherently locked down. If you can't run the software you want on a device you've purchased, it's not really your device.
jaspergilley··on The GM strike is really about the switch to electric cars
Caution: creative destruction at work. You can choose to take advantage of its benefits, or you can choose to fight it.
jaspergilley··on If you have something important to say, don't say it in a paywalled publication
> I pay for 4-5 newspapers (which is too much), but after the sh*tstorm of the past three years (Brexit, elections etc), I felt that it was worth the money.

This isn't a coincidence: to a large extent, the last few years haven't been THAT remarkable, but news outlets will inevitably cover things as if they're very remarkable, because that's what fuels subscriptions. See also: http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/hatethenews

jaspergilley··on Paul Graham on the Transition to Meat Substitutes
Somebody has been watching too much Soylent Green and reading too much Marx
jaspergilley··on NHTSA’s Implausible Safety Claim for Tesla’s Autosteer Driver Assistance System [pdf]
Elon Musk is far greater an inventor/entrepreneur than Edison ever was. If Elon accomplishes a fraction of what he's set out to in his life, history books from the year 2500 will relegate Edison to a footnote in the chapter about Musk.
jaspergilley··on NHTSA’s Implausible Safety Claim for Tesla’s Autosteer Driver Assistance System [pdf]
This seems very fishy. Seemingly un-previously established website publishes study critical of Tesla. Gas auto and oil interests have been known to do this kind of thing before; wouldn't be surprised if this was the latest iteration.
