Nice work!
jasonwilk··on Poll: Were you banned by AdSense? When in the cycle were you notified?
We were running a blog that added AdSense around February 2012. We had received one payout. On the second payout, it was the DAY we were supposed to get paid when they said our account had been flagged. Didn't see a cent. Funny to see this article come out that April 2012 was when they stopped paying out.
jasonwilk··on Uber adds $1 “Safe Rides Fee” to UberX rides for background checks, insurance
For the amount of time I spend in an Uber, it doesn't make sense to pay $1 for EVERY ride. Pennies per ride would make more sense.

If I was Uber, I would charge a $1 per year membership fee to ride UberX to take care of insurance and background checks. Based on the amount of users, that should be more than enough to cover insurance and background checks on every ride I take. Would also be nice subscriber revenue for Uber even though it will be trumped by their overall bookings number.

Just my two cents.

jasonwilk··on Sam Altman for President
Congrats Sam!
jasonwilk··on Snapchat Spurned $3 Billion Acquisition Offer from Facebook
There is a theory called "When the founder drives a porsche", which refers to already wealthy entrepreneurs who have much more appetite for risk to go for the big exit.

Evan has taken at least $30-40M off the table in subsequent financing rounds. He has enough stacked away to go for an exit that deems him a billionaire which my guess at this point would need to be a $5B acquisition (assuming cap gains tax for his piece)

jasonwilk··on Uber CEO responds to concern that Uber's SF service is decreasing in quality
Uber, at it's worst, is still far better than any experience I've had with traditional cabs.
jasonwilk··on Here's how I deal with users who steal
You could probably write something interesting with a Spokeo, LinkedIn or Klout API that would give a pretty solid idea of whether or not you're dealing with someone broke or just trying to not ante up.

Great idea though! Nothing wrong with a little Shaming!

jasonwilk··on OS X 10.9 Mavericks: The Ars Technica Review
IS it just me or is anyone else disappointed that they didn't port over the flat design elements of iOS7 into the OSX Mavericks UI?

I thought that would have looked awesome on my iMac!

jasonwilk··on Jury says Cuban did not commit insider trading
Glad to see this is over for Mark. Definitely worth noting he spent far more on his lawyers to win this case than what it would have cost him to just pay the fines and have the SEC get a quick win for bullying.

I think he proved a major point today in how the SEC has no transparency and if not for his money, he wouldn't have had any choice but to lay down for them. It's a broken system.

Good for him!

jasonwilk··on Created an Unofficial Hacker News / YC Shirt For Everyone
Well, it's an unofficial shirt and we used a different font. Just a 'Y'. I mailed it over to PG in hopes he enjoys it.
jasonwilk··on Meet Kirsty Nathoo, Y Combinator’s Secret Financial And Operational Weapon
We had the pleasure of being in the first YC class when Kirsty started. She was very helpful throughout the entire process of the program. I think she even has her own office hours now!

Congrats on such a praising article Kirsty.

I think 37 Signals is quite a bit more pissed off about their pricing page being emulated by 10k+ startups.

jasonwilk··on ZenPayroll raises seed round from the Mt. Rushmore of Valley entrepreneurs
We currently use ADP as recommended by our first CPA, so was curious to ask our new CFO what he thought about switching to such a service. His response:

"There are a few small payroll companies with similar offerings. However, I have had bad experiences with self-serve payroll services and this is one of the functions that you do not want to deal with, especially when mistakes/adjustments are made. The penalties are high for non-compliance and you want the ability to have a "live" person to deal with when problems surface. In the end, I highly recommend paying for the service as the costs are not extremely high. You can save a few dollars but it is not worth it. There are so many payroll companies out there and I'm surprised the VCs are backing this one"

Team have thoughts on this?

Regardless, congrats on the fundraising.

jasonwilk··on Marc Andreessen’s Productivity Trick to Feeling Marvelously Efficient
Nice product! Just started using it and realized it's far different than my Yammer and/or Wunderlist. This is especially good for writing simple daily recaps which I can then compress into weekly update to my investors.

It would be awesome if you could notice trends in things I write such as People, Companies, etc so I can search by popular tags.

jasonwilk··on Diaspora’s (YC S12) Next Act: Social Remixing Site Makr.io
If its a remixing place for memes, why not make them look like original memes? I don't like the font you chose to overlay since I'm so used to the ones currently on all the meme generators.

Interesting stuff. I know PipeWise has been innovating in this space as well which we're currently testing out.
jasonwilk··on Groupon now worth less than the $6 billion Google offered.
Worth noting that the Google deal had a big asterisk tied to it. Groupon was burning (and is still) through tons of money. There was a very good chance that the deal could have been turned down due to an anit-trust case or held up in court for 18+ months. Both situations would have crippled Groupon. Going public was just as big a risk as accepting the $6B, the former at least got the early shareholders a pop on their money for 4x what Google was going to pay.

I am still bullish that Groupon can become a sustainable business. They are a brand that the local commerce market recognizes, and with that they can package plenty of other services such a POS systems to diversify their income away from just deals.

Nice work. Very cool Product
jasonwilk··on We work a 4-day week and just raised $4.75m
We do the same thing at 140Fire. 4 days in the office, 1 day at home. There is just not enough time for people to get things done on Saturday and Sunday, nor should they have to spend their 2 days off trying to accomplish personal tasks. Friday is the perfect day to take for completing personal things. It also makes them work harder and more efficient for the 4 days in the office.
