jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Master Numbers in a Foreign Language
Thanks! Regional dialects and differences in accent would be a great idea. I may end up being limited by the availability of the audio since I'm using a speech synthesis library at the moment. Perhaps some fallback methods of crowd-sourced audio for the less-common dialects would be an option.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Master Numbers in a Foreign Language
Really? Like what, for instance? I know that ordinal numbers are typically different in languages. Are there others?
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Master Numbers in a Foreign Language
Hm, I'll look into it. Right now it is using the built-in SpeechSynthesis library in the browser. You may try installing the language in the accessibility settings for your OS. (Could you try this and let me know?)

I've considered adding a fallback API like Google's Cloud API if the browser is unavailable, but I haven't done that yet.

If you didn't, be sure to get on the feedback/email list and I'll let you know when I do.

jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Master Numbers in a Foreign Language
Author here. I'm working on launching a new webapp dedicated to helping language learners master numbers both in production and listening comprehension. I'd love any feedback, tips, or suggestions from the HN community.
jasonlfunk··on Organics found on dwarf planet Ceres
It's been awhile since I took chemistry, what is the precise definition of 'organics' in this article?
jasonlfunk··on How to get rich in America
The article isn't saying that wealth is unattainable, just that the wealth of the 1% is unattainable. A reasonable amount of wealth (middle/upper-middle class) is attainable. As other people have commented, most people don't care even to be in the 1%.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Collate: Cross platform note taking app based on plain text data format
Is this more than a markdown editor with a file explorer built in?
jasonlfunk··on Scott Adams: The Social Media Hive Mind
The more interesting title of this story: "Scott Adams: Twitter is censoring my tweets."
jasonlfunk··on LibreTaxi – A free and open source alternative to Uber and Lyft
It's definitely an interesting idea. Though one of the major features that I love about Uber/Lyft is that I don't have to worry about paying in cash.
jasonlfunk··on Testing Ads in Facebook Messenger
I understand the complaint, but what is the alternative? As a social network - you cannot charge to be on the site; otherwise you will never be more than just a niche.

Yes, people hate ads. But, if you were Facebook, what would you do differently?

jasonlfunk··on Show HN: A travel tool to discover destinations based on your budget
Good work! One bit of feedback - perhaps add a field for the number of people. Two people have to buy two plane tickets but only one hotel room. This affects the price per person quite a bit. Is this factored in at all?
jasonlfunk··on After 1 minute on my modem (2016)
I understand the concern. Websites can become too bloated. They can require too many resources or be poorly optimized to reduce bandwidth.

But this also seems like complaining about the trouble with driving a horse-drawn carriage on the interstate. Sure, there are lots of people around the world still on low speed networks - just like there are people who still use horses are their primary mode of travel. And maybe there should be a way to accommodate them, but let's not pretend that the advances in website technology are only a detrimental problem that needs to be solved.

jasonlfunk··on Blockchain, with Santa Claus, in shameless MS Paint
I'm curious why Santa is an "it" rather than a "he".
jasonlfunk··on The Superbook: Turn your smartphone into a laptop for $99
I think this is the future. One device that works everywhere. Ubuntu tried it unsuccessfully. I doubt this one will succeed either. But eventually someone will.
jasonlfunk··on Bayesian Analysis of Racial Bias in Police Shootings in the United States
If you are terrified of ever interacting with the police, I would recommend that you go and meet some of them. The super majority of them are just normal people trying to do good for a community.

Your fear, I think, has far more to do with an availability bias of these relatively few stories getting plastered everywhere. You're much more likely to be killed in a gang or drug related shooting than you are by a cop.

jasonlfunk··on Why do people buy MacBook Pro retinas, given their relatively high price?
I hadn't heard of "staingate" but I just took my mbp in for the same problem, though not nearly as bad as some of the pictures on the site. Just a bit around the top.
jasonlfunk··on Why are there 5 chicken emoji but no Dinosaur Emoji?
[Edit: Hm... why don't emoji show up in HN?]
jasonlfunk··on Mark Zuckerberg's multi-account password was 'dadada'
You file the claim form and submit it before May of last year... But you also had to have paid for LinkedIn premium for to be eligible.

jasonlfunk··on How memory research can help you learn a new language
I was excited to read this article because I am trying to learn a new language... but I found it quite lacking. What was the advice? Just to sleep more?
jasonlfunk··on My first DDoS attack for a $200 ransom
Though, it is interesting how an article with a dead link made it on the frontpage with 3 points.
jasonlfunk··on My first DDoS attack for a $200 ransom
Apparently, it didn't work. :)

Site not installed The site ghirardotti.fr is not yet installed

[Edit: it's up now.]

jasonlfunk··on What Happened to Google Maps?
For what purposes is it less useful? If you aren't driving a car, you're unlikely to be traveling between cities.
jasonlfunk··on I Have No Idea What This Startup Does and Nobody Will Tell Me
I think it's clear that the company doesn't know what they are doing. It's hard to be that consistently unclear. It sounds like they are trying to pull a bunch of smart people in a room and come up with a problem they can solve. Most people figure out what they want to do first and then start a company. It appears that they decided to start a company and then figure out what they want to do.
jasonlfunk··on Font Awesome CDN – Open Source, Low Latency, HTTP/2
Why is this needed? It's already available on bootstrapcdn which is listed on the font awesome website: https://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/get-started/
jasonlfunk··on Your DI framework is killing your code
"Almost certainly: if you’ve got value objects and noun-verbers, your design is rubbish."

If the code is readable, understandable, testable, and it does the job - who are you to say it's rubbish?

jasonlfunk··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
Of course it's true that people with access to capital can afford to be more risky than people who don't. But the majority of the "rich" aren't entrepreneurial and there are plenty of the "poor" who are. There is more to the average entrepreneurial story than simply privilege.
jasonlfunk··on How widely used are security-based HTTP response headers?
Can you help me understand the graphs? What is being plotted on the X axis?
jasonlfunk··on Elance-oDesk Rebrands As Upwork, Debuts Slack-Like Chat Platform
What you are proposing is analogous to the minimum wage argument. While the intentions may be good to help the lower paid workers make more money, what actually will happen is that anyone who isn't worth being paid $50/hr won't be able to get hired. It ends up hurting the very people you are trying to help.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: cta.js – Animate your 'action-to-effect' paths
It seems a little ironic that the main call to action on the website ("Get Started") doesn't seem to use the library.
jasonlfunk··on Facebook's Memory Networks Demo
Not to be too critical... but Frodo isn't in the Shire. He went to the Gray Havens with Bilbo.

“But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.”
