jasonlfunk··on Chrome, Firefox extension that blocks NSFW images using TensorFlow JS
This must have been their pivot after getting sued. They used to rent filtered movies for $1.
jasonlfunk··on Chrome, Firefox extension that blocks NSFW images using TensorFlow JS
There is a company that was trying to work in this space called VidAngel. https://www.vidangel.com/ I used to use them quite a lot and then they got sued by everyone and now I’m not sure what they are up too. It’s unclear if a company has the right to offer others content in a modified form - ie filtering out unacceptable content.

My favorite thing is that they had a JarJar filter for the Star Wars prequels.

jasonlfunk··on Citibank's $900M Blunder
I think the last point made by Brigade proves it was a mistake. If Revlon is in such financial trouble they Brigade believes they won't be able to pay back the loan, why would they have paid back the entry thing, with interest, early? And if it wasn't a mistake, why would they be asking for it back now? It seems perfectly straightforward to me.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: I'm 15 and made a bedtime calculator with React JavaScript
Great work!

I'm curious how this tool relates to the rest of the site: https://www.sleepsources.com

Is it a family-run site that let you create and launch the calculator? Or did you build the whole site? What's the bigger story here?

jasonlfunk··on Silicon MacBook could launch on 27 October and cost $800
Who knows if these pricing rumors are real, but what’s interesting is that if everyone keeps talking about how these machines are going to be quite a bit cheaper, Apple might be forced to actually make them cheaper than they would have otherwise. If they come out with more expensive ones, it’ll be a bad look.
jasonlfunk··on Trump says he will ban TikTok through executive action
But it isn’t about you not knowing something, it’s about the Chinese government knowing things through TikTok.
jasonlfunk··on Against Testing
> One way I like to consider this is to look back after a bug is found, and ask how many tests would have been needed to detect it. The minimal answer is of course one, but we can't reasonably believe that this exact test would be the next one added.

No, you can't. That's why when the bug occurs, you can add that test and then that bug never happens again.

jasonlfunk··on Portals API
Why do we need a new spec for this though? It seems like these are just better iframes, why not just extend the iframe spec?
jasonlfunk··on iOS14 reveals that TikTok may snoop clipboard contents every few keystrokes
> People keep saying this but I've never seen one of these app-specific paste widgets

The Google Translate app does.

jasonlfunk··on Odds of communicating with 36 other possible intelligent civilizations are small
> Of course since no one knows how long intelligent civilizations last, (given our current trajectory, some might guess not very long)

These people must have a very short sighted view of history? Our current trajectory for almost everything that matters is positive. Longer life spans, fewer wars, better medicine and technology, average base-level knowledge, etc. Barring some global unavoidable catastrophe, there is no reason to think we are going anywhere very soon.

jasonlfunk··on GitHub to replace “master” with alternative term to avoid slavery references
Why would that matter?
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Collected Notes – A note-taking blogging app I made
I think you are probably in the minority who think storing things in the cloud is nonsense. Maybe it doesn’t work for you, but it has tons of benefits.

This service might not be for you, but there is no reason to post such a negative comment degrading someone else’s work.

jasonlfunk··on Intermittent fasting works – not only for weight loss but also for heart health
My experience with IF has taught me that I’m much better at complete denial, rather than moderation. So if I want to reduce my caloric intake it works better for me to say No to everything for 16 hours and only eat for 8, then to try to just eat less and in moderation all day.

It also applies to carb and other reductions. If I allow myself any bread, sweets, etc, I will eat too much. It’s easier for me to eat 0, then it is to only eat a little.

jasonlfunk··on Electrons May Well Be Conscious
They are only indistinguishable in all the ways that we know how to look. There may be a way to differing them that we haven’t discovered yet.
jasonlfunk··on Enabling E-Textile Microinteractions
The video of this in action is pretty cool.

jasonlfunk··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs
It seems to me that blogs have been replaced with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social Media platforms let you express yourself in similar ways that blogs did, with the added benefit of immediate and easy feedback from your followers. I don’t see blogging returning unless it becomes far more interactive then traditional blogs were.
jasonlfunk··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I made a goal tracking system for my time tracking. It helps me make sure I'm working enough.

jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Time Goalie – Track your time tracking goals
I just launched one of my newest side projects called Time Goalie. I use it to help me reach the work and financial goals that I set for myself. As a freelance software engineer, most of my gigs are hourly and I was having a hard time knowing if I was putting in enough hours every week.

So I created Time Goalie. If track your time, I'd love for you to check it out.

And if you are so kind, consider up-voting it on Product Hunt: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/time-goalie

jasonlfunk··on Facebook, Google to be forced to share ad revenue with Australian media
What if Google and Facebook just said “No, thank you.”? I think Google and Facebook have more power in this relationship, which might say something about the tech giants. The only possible thing the Aussies could do is block the websites, and that sounds like political suicide to me. I’m guessing the companies will decide to play ball, but if other countries start to follow suit, it might be interesting to see what happens if they start pushing back.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Crescendo – macOS App to view real time event data
Those annoying pop ups are only annoying because on day one everything has to ask permission. After that, you only see them if you install a new application. I certainly prefer having to give my permission before an application uses my microphone or records my screen.
jasonlfunk··on Apple to pay up to $500M to settle U.S. lawsuit over slow iPhones
Apple decided this didn’t fit with their design. People know this when they buy the phone. If they want a removable battery, buy a different phone.
jasonlfunk··on FCC forced by court to ask the public again for feedback on net neutrality
It’s been over two years since Net Neutrality was repealed. I remember at the time there was a lot of talk about how the internet was going to be ruined by throttling, paid “fast lanes”, etc.

Have any of these things happened? Or did that turn out to mostly be fear-mongering?

jasonlfunk··on No person who was born blind has ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia
Significant results do not require significant proof. This is a common misunderstanding. All hypothesis would require the same amount of proof, regardless of a person’s biases going into it.
jasonlfunk··on Pedestrian fatally crushed between two parked cars after one started remotely
You would also need to factor in how many deaths per year are avoided because of cars. I'm thinking specifically of emergency vehicles (ambulances, police cars, etc) but I'm sure other the argument can be made for other vehicles as well.
jasonlfunk··on First Message on the Internet
Does that mean that the first three characters ever successfully sent were ‘lol’?

Seems fitting.

jasonlfunk··on Google AdWords charged me for clicks in Istanbul while location-targeting the US
I’m the opposite. An American living abroad. US targeted ads still are applicable to me. I can understand why someone might want to disable this feature, but it’s not a scam by any means.
jasonlfunk··on Worker-Owned Apps Are Trying to Fix the Gig Economy
Why would that be a problem?
jasonlfunk··on Worker-Owned Apps Are Trying to Fix the Gig Economy
Yes. Edited.
jasonlfunk··on Worker-Owned Apps Are Trying to Fix the Gig Economy
Despite the loaded exploitation rhetoric in the article, if competitors can come into the market that is better for the workers, that’s great. And if it raises the standards for the privately owned apps, that’s even better. This seems like a win all around.
