jasonladuke0311··on Midlife: A Philosophical Guide
If they won't accept an "old person" sharing their experiences, that's their folly.
jasonladuke0311··on Instagram, TikTok, and the Three Trends
> Which is to say, the move from 3 to 4 strikes me as a move toward "real human interaction," owing to the fact that the "content" there is much less prepackaged Kardashianism and much more "real person sharing real thing."

I believe we are well into number 4 and let me tell you, neither the "person" or the "thing" feels "real". Everything is so contrived, scripted, architected, and manufactured that the entirety of social media feels like The Truman Show at this point.

jasonladuke0311··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
It wasn't intended to be a fair comparison, but you're right. I reasoned that they are both fairly simple machines and a washer shouldn't break after 18 months.
jasonladuke0311··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
I just had to pay $300 to repair a washer that was like 18 months old (I started trying to repair it myself but wife got impatient as we had tons of kids clothes to wash). Really frustrating.

Contrast with the 40 year old crockpot we only retired because I cracked the pot while cleaning it.

jasonladuke0311··on Is this the end of social networking?
> The newer connections are also way more transactional than they used to be. Just about everyone is selling something or trying to use their channels to promote themselves somehow.

Boy is this off-putting. Even amateur athletes and nobodies in hobbies I follow on Instagram are pimping anything and everything. I can't hate someone for trying to make a buck, especially as full-time athletes in non-lucrative sports, but it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

But not as bad as the taste of protein from anywhere other than Mega Protein Source! Use code THISSHTSUX for 10% off of your next purchase!

jasonladuke0311··on Ask HN: When did corporate America become so flaky?
> Reminds me of this gem (2019) - I've been hiring people for 10 years, and I still swear by a simple rule: If someone doesn't send a thank-you email, don't hire them. https://www.businessinsider.c

A fuckin thank-you email?! That lady is out of her gourd. I didn’t receive a response (even an automated email rejection) to over 50% of the hundred or so applications I submitted during my last job search. Half of the companies to whom I applied didn’t even acknowledge that I applied to work there.

jasonladuke0311··on Why aren't smart people happier?
> Compared to what it was like when I was working at Walmart...?

No kidding. I wonder how many tech workers have had a job outside the industry. Money solved a whole shitload of my problems.

"Don't fall into the trap of anthropomorphizing Larry Ellison" is one of the funniest things I've ever heard: https://youtu.be/-zRN7XLCRhc?t=2302
jasonladuke0311··on How (and Why) Neil Gaiman Finally Adapted ‘The Sandman’ for TV
24 hour diner followed a bunch of nobodies and a side character for 40 minutes. That is not in any formula that conventional shows would follow.
jasonladuke0311··on My favorite iPhone feature was removed, long live its subpar replacement
Totally agree with the author, I loved this feature and copying parts of text/URLs is more difficult now.
jasonladuke0311··on Ask HN: What HN post made you money?
In a sense, this comment [0] from bitexploder made me money; it gave me a framework I used to learn how to be a security engineer. Funnily enough, I unknowingly applied to his consulting firm years later before I found my current role.

jasonladuke0311··on Instagram is shifting to videos – users aren't happy
Spotify transitions to a “song like those in your playlist” when a playlist finishes…and 95% of those songs are from the playlist I just finished listening to…makes no sense.
jasonladuke0311··on Want to start hacking?
I recently moved into an offensive job after a few years doing secops and cloud security. I think his point about having a genuine interest in security and its offensive applications is really important. Self-learning never really felt like work or a chore because I really found it interesting.

I’m also going to plug my favorite resource: Pentesterlab. I get nothing from this, I just think it’s a great product. It’s been my most used resource since I decided I wanted to be a pentester. I think I’ve seen Louis post here before, so if you read this, thanks for making a great site.

jasonladuke0311··on Twitter data breach exposes contact details for 5.4M accounts; on sale for $30k
Yeah, good thing too. Wouldn’t want Twitter to be overrun with bots.
jasonladuke0311··on Deadspin changed sports journalism
Even though it was kind of a harbinger for a lot of the garbage in contemporary sports media, I miss Deadspin.
jasonladuke0311··on IKEA Canada confirms data breach
Yup, this is why I didn’t buy their dresser that required “registration” and a waiver.

EDIT: not from Canada, just in general

jasonladuke0311··on Can the knees go over the toes? (2016)
SSBs are awesome (I bought one), especially for us computer touchers. Doing proper squats with a SSB requires a lot of thoracic extension which helps counteract the bunching we do all day. Thoracic mobility tends to suck in desk-bound people and it can contribute to a host of mobility issues throughout the rest of the body.
jasonladuke0311··on Tell HN: You can't hire because you don't post salary ranges
That’s like saying unions suck because Conor McGregor or Lebron James won’t make as much as they do now.
jasonladuke0311··on Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon
The average "combatant" on one side couldn't lift a rifle, and the other side would be more likely to die from heart disease than from enemy fire.

My understanding is that was based on research from SLA Marshall which might have been fabricated [0].

jasonladuke0311··on The high price we pay for social media
> Secondly, it strikes me as "out there in the world" that this is the biggest issue. To me, as a 50 year old man, it's bloody weird anyone spending this much time online, but to be outdoors, or at a bar, or a restaurant with your partner, or looking after your kids, or looking at a sunset, or on the beach - and be constantly in your phone - this is insane.

This is one of the few things I’m confident I’m doing well as a dad and husband. We don’t use our phones when out to dinner or doing family activities. I don’t set “rules” about it; we just have a shared understanding as a family that these times should be spent together, not off in the clouds.

jasonladuke0311··on Bill Watterson’s refusal to license Calvin and Hobbes (2016)
It’s still prevalent in music, especially the hardcore and metal scenes. Changing your sound and/or finding commercial success are frequently met with accusations of “selling out” (see Turnstile or Deafheaven for examples).

jasonladuke0311··on Alain de Botton on existential maturity and what emotional intelligence means
Maliciously reductive, basically a Reddit-tier comment. Thumbs down.
jasonladuke0311··on TikTok updated privacy policy to collect faceprints and voiceprints (2021)
Instead of addressing the substance of the argument, you debate semantics. Is the current United States govt harnessing the organs and forcing sterilization of ethnic minorities? It is patently absurd to compare the two, my goodness. In the words of Jules Winnfield, the two “ain't the same ballpark, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same fuckin' sport.”
jasonladuke0311··on TikTok updated privacy policy to collect faceprints and voiceprints (2021)
> The US has just done far worse.

Nah, you just hear about most of the US's screw-ups. I seriously doubt any of us in the West have an inkling of the atrocities they commit.
