jasonhoyt··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023)
PeerJ Open Access| Senior Frontend | VueJS | REMOTE within United Kingdom| Full Time £45K-£65K| https://peerj.com/expertrxiv/820

Of possible interest if you've ever been denied access to research by a paywall, or feel that the idea of Open Access is no longer possible due to high fees. PeerJ was established in 2012 (seeded by OATV) as a pure Open Access academic publisher with the aim to not just publish OA, but to make it affordable. Tim O'Reilly still sits on our Board today. We've shunned big VC, yet have become self-sustaining and are still founder-controlled.

PeerJ is looking for a Senior Frontend Developer who has advanced knowledge, experience, and leadership in VueJS (Vuetify component library is ++). Full details in link above.

You can email me personally with your CV. Send to {my HN handle}@peerj dot com.

jasonhoyt··on Google Data Studio
A nicer alternative for non-US folks, or even those in the US, would be DataHero (https://datahero.com/). Less feature rich than Tableau, but also extremely easy to use with practical graphs and data mashups out of the box.

I have no connection to the app, other than I've tried dozens like it, including Google's Data Studio.

jasonhoyt··on The Open Research Framework
Many consider CC BY SA not open either. Minimum CC BY, or CC0 e.g. http://oaspa.org/why-cc-by/
jasonhoyt··on Elsevier lobbying politicians that data mining could kill patients
Listen to the two minute Q&A for the full context of the allegations. The wider context is that Elsevier has allegedly tried for years to limit researchers systematically downloading thousands of articles and data mining for insights...even with a paid subscription.
jasonhoyt··on Dutch universities start their Elsevier boycott plan
Irony alert: PageRank was originally modeled on the observation of how academic citations are a network. Back on topic - still many works are read, but never cited, despite their contribution to science (that's another nut to crack though).
jasonhoyt··on Mining usage patterns for the Android API
> I love that this is a free service, but PeerJ's download button needs to be moved to a slightly more obvious location.

Agree. Added to roadmap!

jasonhoyt··on A surge of p-values between 0.040 and 0.049 in recent decades [pdf]
Heads up! The original link is pointing to v1 of the preprint. Current version v3 - and can be found at the canonical URL https://peerj.com/preprints/447/ or https://peerj.com/preprints/447v3/

v3 change log: We improved the legends of the tables, to make clear that the table contains the percentage of papers reporting a significant result over the sum of the papers reporting a significant or non-significant result (S/(S+NS)).

v2 change log: This is version 2 of an earlier preprint with some corrections in figure legends.

jasonhoyt··on LastPass Now Checks If Your Sites Are Affected by Heartbleed
There really should be a disclaimer that this tool is useless when checking certificates re-keyed with the same starting and end dates. It could create a reputational risk for sites that are otherwise safe or patched.
jasonhoyt··on Academic journals face a radical shake-up
Like Ian and eLife, I am putting together a tech team for PeerJ [1], a new Open Access publisher with venture backing from Tim O'Reilly [2,3]. If you are in London and want to work on a problem that truly affects all of us then give me shout at jason@peerj.com. Looking for both dev ops backend and front-end/ux.
