jason_slack··on Ask HN: Help me utilize my passion
This sounds interesting. I have built some tools in the past to parse for specific occurrences (determined by the text around the search criteria) to determine what might be most important to know from a given text and produced a Summary of the text.
jason_slack··on Ask HN: Help me utilize my passion
This is also definitely a possibility. It may need to be this.
jason_slack··on Ask HN: Neurodiversity/ADHD Friendly Companies
Actually, for me Vyvanse wasn't even in the first three medications suggested to me to try first.
jason_slack··on Ask HN: Neurodiversity/ADHD Friendly Companies
I am on Vyvanse and Adderall XR. Vyvanse has a much cleaner feeling to me and it is easier for me to skip a day (if I want to, like staying home and playing with kids) where as with the Adderall I cannot skip a day without harsh side effects.

Edit: and I forgot to mention, my insurance covers it, thankfully but they wouldn't cover something like Mydayis

jason_slack··on [dead]
RIP. You led me to find my true self amongst the noise of the world.
jason_slack··on Ask HN: How do I know if im a slow developer?
We have an internal bug reporting process where internal developers talk about why each others code isn't working for them.

Perhaps I need to add a function to accommodate a specific item we didn't anticipate. This isn't a bug.

However if I have a function that does x,y,z and it turns out it can't do z or it doesn't do y as it should then we consider this a bug. We count these numbers and we ask each other to submit something that states their logic and design process. We also consider inadequate design or lack of a process a bug as well. Poor planning.

We also track time on how long it takes us to fix these bugs and implement the original design. We also ask each other for estimates on how long it would them to implement and we build a schedule on an average of these estimates.

I just ran the query for last year. I had 1 bug each quarter. One of the developers has 178. The last hire has almost 400.

I implemented a plan to reduce draw call overhead. It took me 3 months. That was almost double what other developers estimated it would take them. So far just one issue has been reported and it was more an error using to0 few words in the code comments but I added an `assert` just to warn the developer to look at this and I also fixed the code comments and provided an example.

Edit: Yes, higher ups do and look at this quarterly and I'm not sure what they do with the info to be honest.

jason_slack··on Ask HN: How do I know if im a slow developer?
I am often slower than other developers. However, I produce far fewer inconsistencies (bugs...), my code is highly reusable, and my documentation skills make it easy for someone to come behind be and know what is going on without asking any (or very few) questions.

Perhaps you were not a good fit there but another place you will be an amazing fit. Keep your head up.

Quality over quantity.

jason_slack··on Show HN: Looptap – A minimal game to waste your time
This was really stimulating for my ADHD. Hyperfocusing my high score was 1300.

Make this an iOS game!

Does anyone have any interesting iOS recommendations for ADHD stmming?

jason_slack··on Ask HN: How do you memorize things you read?
I use spaced repetition for preparing for exams. It works quite well for me along with an active recall notebook that I can easily read through many times a day.
jason_slack··on Ask HN: How do you memorize things you read?
I am listening to this book on Audible...
jason_slack··on Introducing the PineNote
For me it is the distraction free environment. I can deep dive into the material. It also feels a lot like real paper. Having all of my thoughts on various topics, school notes, books I've read, therapy notes, etc.

And me…
jason_slack··on Ask HN: Best “I brought down production” story?
I worked for a company back around 1999 that used MS Access to do the entire companies payroll. Including the CEO. Once I was awoken at 1am because payroll wasn’t running. In my sleepiness I accidentally manually committed a few database values (that I had never touched before) that gave the executive team 0.00 paychecks. Not a single exec including the CEO noticed for about 6 weeks.
jason_slack··on Poll: How do you type italic text in Markdown?
Interesting because my co-workers always ask me to change __bold__ to *bold* even though both are correct. I tend to switch between * and __ depending upon how my writing is structured.

Anyone else feel strongly one way of the other?

jason_slack··on The rise of E Ink Tablets and Note Takers: reMarkable 2 vs Onyx Boox Note Air
I have owned a reMarkable 2 since January of this year. While it isn't perfect, I am happy with my purchase. The software updates are stable, the build quality of the hardware is solid.

I love the distraction free writing and this is the main reason I bought it along with school. I put on some Brain.fm and I tend to get lost in my focus and I don't realize hours have gone by.

I have heard that their customer service isn't very good and that devices are hard to get repaired. I haven't had an issues yet and fingers crossed because this is my biggest worry. Something breaks and I am out $600.

AMA...

jason_slack··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
I have these same ones and AirPod Max as well. Both really amazing for focus, deep thought and traveling.

jason_slack··on Are McMansions Making People Any Happier?
I used to live in a very large house. It didn’t make me any happier. If anything it was a pain to clean and maintain. Now I live in 200sqft and honestly I’ve never regretted this change. My friends find it comical.
jason_slack··on 18yr old professional bowler converts 7-10 split on TV in first time in 30 years
I’m sure that has something to do with it. But this guy was a lefty and he still went after the 10.
jason_slack··on 18yr old professional bowler converts 7-10 split on TV in first time in 30 years
Of course! We were in a league of about 18 people and when a guy made this everyone bought him a shot. I do remember him sharing though and being driven home. It was talked about for months afterwards and the local paper did a story on it.
jason_slack··on 18yr old professional bowler converts 7-10 split on TV in first time in 30 years
It’s easy to leave a 7-10 by coming in either very high on the head pin or chopping it right down the middle at a slower speed.

edit: typo

jason_slack··on 18yr old professional bowler converts 7-10 split on TV in first time in 30 years
I grew up in a family of bowlers and have bowled as a hobby and professionally. This is really hard and almost complete luck. I’ve seen the 7-10 made by sliding the 10 pin across left and also deflecting it off the back drop. I’ve never seen it by going after the 7 pin. The physics here is just amazing.

There can even be benefit from using a ball that has a high shine or a very hard ball to cut down on the oil reacting with the ball and lessening the hook.

jason_slack··on I made a mobile app for my significant other and she won't use it
Why won't she use it...you never stated why! We need to understand what our users really want!
jason_slack··on GnuCOBOL – a free/libre COBOL compiler
TBH, the jobs I held in the late 90's and early 2000's where I was a COBOL programmer were honestly some of the most challenging jobs I've had. There were large systems that nobody understood and hadn't touched. I was really surprised to find banks relying on systems that hadn't been touched in 10 years.

But let me ask. Would anyone hire me having 6 years COBOL experience from late 90's to early 2000's?

jason_slack··on Wix and Their Dirty Tricks
I feel like these types of public feuds only result in a pissing match where the consumer ultimately loses not the companies involved.
jason_slack··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz died today, 8 years ago
Aaron's writing were often thought provoking for me. I often feel I should do more advocacy for the most important causes in this world.
jason_slack··on Simple Bank Is Closing
Does anyone have thoughts on a replacement? I'd love to stay with a more modern approach to banking.
jason_slack··on Pixar's Render Farm
Do you have a link to Tractor to let folks check it out?
jason_slack··on Why are there so many cats in Istanbul?
I watched “Kedi” a few years ago. Now, my 2 and 3 year olds remind me weekly they need to see what the kitties are up to. This is also why we have 9 cats. Go figure. I’m glad my kids respect the cats and let them all integrate into outlives as the cats deem appropriate.
