jarmitage··on Electroglottography based real-time voice-to-MIDI controller
The abstract states their usage scenario is where clean audio input is not available

jarmitage··on Show/Ask HN: Latex to audiobook – improving a hacked together proof of concept
I quickly hacked this together as a PoC to see if Google Cloud TTS's WaveNet voice was "good enough" for reviewing my thesis writing on the go in audio form.

It works quite well, I noticed a bunch of writing errors that I hadn't picked up visually. And it's just about listenable enough that I can see this being a good way to reduce some screen time while the weather is good.

The code is obviously pretty terrible as a starting point for anything more complete or complex though :)

Does this idea resonate with you? How would you suggest rewriting it? What features would you add next? Have you already seen this done better (I couldn't find much prior art)?

jarmitage··on Building the First GUIs
When I get asked to give talks about interaction design I show Figure 3 from Kay and Goldberg's Personal Dynamic Media (1977) [1], with the "interim Dynabook" part of the caption redacted, and ask the students to fill in the blank. They usually guess "personal computer" and are then shocked to learn the actual framing and the overall backstory.

jarmitage··on Show HN: Mani – Place virtual sticky notes in real-world spaces
Have you considered linking this to Notion / Roam Research API etc?

Higher level concept than standalone 'sticky note' is worth exploring. Lots of indigenous cultures were/are based on memory techniques based on tying specific pieces of knowledge to exact locations: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29759605-the-memory-code

jarmitage··on I built my own analog drum machine (2020)

jarmitage··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
Are there scenarios where this would be more efficient than using regenerative agriculture techniques like cover cropping to naturally out-compete weeds?
jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
I feel like I gained more from this comment than the last month of mainstream media combined, so thank you for sharing.
jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
That's good to hear. Maybe I don't read enough UK media widely enough (for health reasons!) to really have a say here, but I don't remember reading similar articles recently. It must be out there though, perhaps in more specialised media.
jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
All good points indeed!

I was referring more to the discourse, which seems to be about heightening nationalistic sentiments by pitting governments against each other fighting over a small stockpile, rather than highlighting the progress/pitfalls/ongoing support needs of collaborative initiatives to provide scaled solutions.

But maybe this is just a sign that I need to broaden my media inputs, always a good thing to do.

jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
I would have taken your question seriously if you didn't follow it up with an over-generalised and rude remark.
jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
Nowhere in particular. Perhaps my sentiment is more a reflection of media coverage focusing on issues like TFA, rather than on increasing supply which is less scandalous.

Thanks for this link. I would much rather that the media kept me up to date on this instead!

jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
Me neither, but I find it hard to believe that it is more difficult than remaining stuck in the pandemic.
jarmitage··on EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls
Does anyone know why all of the geopolitical discourse in the UK and Europe has been around arguing over a small supply, rather than about increasing manufacturing capacity?
jarmitage··on Dynamicland
For those wondering about an update, they posted a "Narrative Description of Activities" document (something to do with 501c status) recently (https://twitter.com/worrydream/status/1367894681342799875), choice quote re comments in this thread:

> The Dynamicland researchers are not developing a product. The computers that the researchers build are models: not for distribution, but for studying and evaluating. The goal of the research is not to provide hardware or software to users, but to discover a new set of ideas which will enable all people to create computational environments for themselves, with no dependence on Dynamicland or anyone else, and to understand how these ideas can be taught and learned. The end result of the research is fundamentally intended to be a form of education, empowering communities to be self-sufficient and teach these ideas to each other.

jarmitage··on Show HN: I wrote a program to convert lines of text into trees
Great, very handy! Just FYI `readlink -f` doesn't work on macOS

May I suggest the name txtree?

jarmitage··on The Bank of England unveils design of new £50 banknote featuring Alan Turing
I should clarify that I was being facetious about the idea of blatantly memorialising suicide.

> We simply don't have the power to right this wrong; we can only stay vigilant in the present day and honour the memory of Turing (and countless others) by preventing similar injustice now.

Quite agree, but has anything been done towards the latter? Every tribute to Turing I can think of has been about science and war, not justice.

jarmitage··on The Bank of England unveils design of new £50 banknote featuring Alan Turing
I would go the other way and say it's more accurate to call it the London government ;)

Although I was being deliberately over the top in my original comment, it wouldn't have hurt to add something tasteful to the note to symbolise the injustice and struggle he (and many) faced, and the direction of progress since then. Instead we get the palatable war hero parts only.

And to clarify what I meant by 'disgrace': Erasmus is gone because of Brexit, and to wash the fiasco clean they're using Turing's name to market its replacement. I don't know what else you can call that other than shameless.

jarmitage··on How do plants extract nutrients from the ground?
Much appreciated, thank you for sharing!

I don't have a specific interest at the moment, but have been more curious about this area recently after getting into regen ag podcasts.

jarmitage··on How do plants extract nutrients from the ground?
Fascinating, thank you - I have some more questions if you don't mind! Was that your first degree or did you switch to this domain from something else? Would you care to name/recommend your degree program, and any key texts, for someone interested in following in your footsteps?
jarmitage··on How do plants extract nutrients from the ground?
If you don’t mind me asking, what is/was your educational/career route that led you to the knowledge that you currently have? It seems interestingly diverse, like you have biology, agriculture, but also some mechanical?
jarmitage··on 'Hovering ship' photographed off Cornish coast by walker
In this case, being off the coast of Falmouth, the ship is more than likely standing still.
jarmitage··on Augmenting Human Intellect (1962)
My favourite part is still the 'demo' of tying a brick to a pen to prove the power of augmentation via de-augmentation
jarmitage··on UK to launch taxpayer-funded high-risk tech research agency exempt from FOI
The FOI part means this is dead on arrival and will be abused all ends up.

For this to work you need the public to understand why DARPA worked. Hiding details of failures makes that impossible (and again, completely open to corruption).
