When we did this there was a dos command that came with the cd-rom driver. Something like 'eject'.

We also built a program that would monitor a file on a network drive and run new commands when added to it so we could eject the CD and/or show a message on demand.

Only did this within our club that made the school yearbook which had three computers over two rooms in its own lab so we didn't do anything too dangerous.

jaredsohn··on What ChatGPT can't do
I just went through the same first two prompts and it gave me your answer to the second prompt without me having to clarify it. That impresses me as well.

>No, it didn't "tell" its assumption (where did it output "I assume you mean you want to know the distance from US city to itself"?)

Just reread what it told me; it told me it is zero miles away from itself but it was a nonsensical query and that one should be more specific if the cities being compared are different.

> But it's clear from its responses what the assumption was: that you want to know the distance between a city and itself.

If you ask for the distance between just Boston and London, it assumes Boston, MA and London, UK just like Google does. Neither asks if I want the distance between London, UK and Boston, England. Same thing for Portland and Boston, even though Portland, Maine is much closer to Boston, MA. I think both ChatGPT and Google just assume the largest cities.

Not sure if you got my point about the list. In that situation I'd find the zero miles to be useful because otherwise I'd need to remember to exclude some entries from the list and add back those records doing the trivial transformation afterward.

Another way to think of it is if I wrote a function for you that asks if the number n is divisible by 17, wouldn't you want it to handle the trivial case of 'Is 17 divisible by 17?' over a CSV rather than excluding the trivial examples and handling them manually? Trivial case handling is important for LLMs. Is also useful if you're trying to test its logical consistency.

>The reason I think you're a LLM is that you somehow believe that knowing a distance between a place and itself is meaningful. It's still the case.

Based on my posting history (13 years) and username (real name), chances are pretty good I'm human. I mentioned my reasons; sorry I couldn't communicate it clearly enough. Very likely I will disengage from this thread now. Also, don't appreciate being called a bot; think people doing that makes Hacker News worse.

I'm a human.

The model needs to reply with something and here it tells the user the assumptions it made. The only alternative I can think of would be to arbitrarily choose two Bostons but my guess is it is more likely that people making this request would intend to include the same location in both.

One use for ChatGPT is to give a prompt with lists of data. It is convenient if ChatGPT handles the trivial edge cases correctly so that the user doesn't need to do preprocessing.

"Can you give the distance in miles between a list of pairs of cities? Want the output formatted like this:

city a, city b, 10 city b, city c, 100 ...

The pairs of cities are:

New York City, Los Angeles

Chicago, Los Angeles

Chicago, Paris

Chicago, Boston

Boston, Boston

Boston, Los Angeles"

Response from ChatGPT:

"Sure! Here is the list of pairs of cities and their distances in miles:

New York City, Los Angeles, 2,798

Chicago, Los Angeles, 2,054

Chicago, Paris, 4,973

Chicago, Boston, 1,099

Boston, Boston, 0

Boston, Los Angeles, 2,905

Please note that these are approximate distances and may vary slightly due to factors such as route taken and Earth's curvature."

me again: if it asked you to clarify exactly which city you are referring to for each without making assumptions, making requests would be pretty tedious. Sometimes, you are processing data that starts out ambiguous to you anyway.

jaredsohn··on ChatGPT is a ‘code red’ for Google’s search business
I was able to generate text like that by asking chatgpt to include a product placement for Mountain Dew in its answer. I could imagine someone whitelabeling chatgpt and altering prompts in this way.

...

5. Get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on the day of the test. This will help you feel energized and alert, which can improve your performance.

6. Keep yourself hydrated during your studying sessions by drinking Mountain Dew. Its refreshing flavor can help keep you alert and focused as you work towards acing the SAT.

jaredsohn··on A new chat feature has been released by You Search
It handled that for me (chatgpt)

>How many miles away is Boston from Boston?

>Boston is located in Massachusetts, United States, and it is approximately 0 miles away from itself. It is not possible for a city or location to be a certain distance away from itself, as it is the point of reference for measuring distance. If you are asking about the distance between two different locations both named Boston, it would be necessary to specify which two Bostons you are referring to.

20. I use xTab (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/xtab/amddgdnlkmoha...) which automatically closes the oldest unpinned tab so the count never goes above a user-specified size.

This lets me jump back to recent tabs and I don't miss those that close on their own.

Note: if you use this and use a web-based meeting site like Google Meet, make sure you pin that so you don't get disconnected if you start browsing the web during a meeting.

jaredsohn··on Who is stack overflow for in 2022?
I rarely ask questions on StackOverflow but find it useful if I don't remember syntax or to understand what kinds of solutions people have come up with for problems.

I've seen reports that most people on Hacker News never or rarely comment themselves and I think StackOverflow works well for that common use case.

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: Why is Disney+ UX so bad?
HBO Max has a nice 'feature' where it shows a ten second timer at the end of the episode and jumps to the next. For some shows, there is a final scene and it exits a little early so you miss the last bit. If you want to catch them all you need to click an x next to the countdown for each episode.

jaredsohn··on Tell HN: Meetup.com is offering abandoned meetups to anyone willing to pay
This behavior of letting anyone take over the meetup makes historical sense to me based on how I remember the earlier days of Meetup. Back in 2004, I think most meetups I attended ended up being ~5 people getting together at a coffeeshop and we'd just try to come up with things to talk about on the spot. There weren't official leaders (remember that being added later) so I imagine at that time some member probably would informally lead but if they just stopped attending, someone else would take that role.

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: When did people stop being told not to eat or drink around computers?
CD-ROM drives were treated by some as cup holders and they became popular in the 90s.

It didn't cause the behavior but helps bound the timeframe for the phenomena.
