jaredbrown··on SaaS Pricing: Our Big Free Plan Mistake
Correct
jaredbrown··on Proof that free plans don't attract the right users
I think it's super attractive to new businesses to push their wares via a generous free plan. But in the end, unless you think word of mouth is going to take off. Validating your business model by charging is much more important.
jaredbrown··on Startup Analytics: Why and How We Use Mixpanel
I agree that it seems cleaner. Ultimately what I want is a clear funnel segmented by referral sources.
jaredbrown··on A Crater of Cosmic Proportions
Very interesting!
jaredbrown··on Test your startup idea: A list that took me 8 years to develop
I really like the idea of having a bunch of litmus tests like this that you can rate just about any business concept against. I think far too often people get married to the first "million dollar idea" that pops into their head and they almost all skip doing this type of analysis. This list is excellent and could save someone years of lost time.
jaredbrown··on Survey Results: How Many Developers Write Unit Tests?
If you are not writing unit tests yet you may want to ask yourself why you are in the minority. How do you compare to the results in this survey?
jaredbrown··on Emocean.me is finally live
Congrats and thanks for sharing.
jaredbrown··on Should I write unit tests? Yes and I’ll tell you why.
I might have to use that the next time I pitch a client on the virtues of unit testing.
jaredbrown··on Should I write unit tests? Yes and I’ll tell you why.
I recommend the following strategy:

1. Don’t ship any new features without writing unit tests for them first.

2. These new features most likely rely on parts of existing code so write a few tests for that existing code with each new feature.

3. If something breaks in production write a test for it at the time that you fix it.

Little by little you’ll increase your code coverage without grinding development to a halt.

In my experience this strategy only works with small projects. Projects with any level of complexity will have you running from fire to fire and it will impede your forward progress. Developer retention and customer happiness will suffer. I'd be happy to compete against such a company. ;)
jaredbrown··on Ask HN: Translating copy targeted to software developers to other languages
I have used proz.com and was able to find a good translator. I would classify my experience as good. My biggest issue was not having something like what Canonical's Launchpad provides for managing the strings and their translations. Instead we emailed Word docs back and forth.
jaredbrown··on Building a Better Virtual Team
You mention hiring people on an evaluation period. That makes sense. But where do you find these people in the first place?
jaredbrown··on Podcast: Scalable Marketing Techniques and Tactics
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
jaredbrown··on Podcast: Scalable Marketing Techniques and Tactics
Thanks! I'm a strong believer that entrepreneurial developers need to have a passion to learn marketing. I'm terrible at it but I'm eager to learn more.
jaredbrown··on Podcast: Scalable Marketing Techniques and Tactics
This is a podcast for developers and designers. But instead of always talking about code and design we're trying to tackle some of the skill sets that we need to master to get our projects off the ground. Chief among those skill sets is marketing. What do others think about the idea of a podcast for people like us that focuses on other areas like marketing? What other skill sets should we discuss? What experts should we engage? I'd love to hear everyone's feedback.
jaredbrown··on We are not github and that's perfectly fine
Yea, I love the idea. I just don't see GitHub as it is today being all that similar. The comparison didn't come to mind. I think a response like this is typical from most people you mention your product or service to. The typical response is to compare it to a large product or service. I think you need to be aware of these large companies, but that in general this feedback isn't worth much.
jaredbrown··on We are not github and that's perfectly fine
I'm surprised so many people ask this question. Isn't the intent of binpress to provide these code snippets/libraries/solutions at a cost?
jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
Hilarious
jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
Thanks for the tip. I just fixed it.
jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
Sweet. Glad you like the site. We send out a weekly email that has 20 of the top posts on the site. A lot of developers are starting to swear by that newsletter. ;)
jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
That's interesting. Though I wonder what the quality of the output is. They are no doubt foreigners at that price and will have the language barrier and Skype call quality to contend with.
jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
I'm confused. Is your crowd-sourced transcription service free? Or are you charging a nominal fee and having the crowd do it for free?

What are some good machine translation sites?

jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
I like the community idea. So do you mean just doing a summary at that point? Or do you want an entire transcript?
jaredbrown··on How to Get Traction for Your Projects
Thanks Adam. I started looking into transcription services. The issue is cost and audio quality so far. The going rate appears to be $1/min. So the avg Talentopoly episode would weigh in at $80. Plus a lot of the text would most likely be wrong due to the poor quality of Skype. But I'll keep searching. If you know of any good services that are free or inexpensive let me know.

jaredbrown··on Ask HN: Where do you find good podcasts?
Thanks
jaredbrown··on Ask HN: Are curated email newsletters a good idea?
Thanks for the valuable input.
jaredbrown··on RTFM: Dispelling a Myth About Steve Jobs’ Resignation
Apple defines new market segments with their innovations that effect us all. Noting who's in charge of strategy and product design is therefore important.
jaredbrown··on Your thoughts on my new podcast?
The Talentopoly Podcast discusses some of the best links posted on Talentopoly.com each week.

- I decided to buck the trend of (1) co-host and instead went with having (2) co-hosts. One is a designer, the other is a dev/designer, and I'm mostly dev.

- I was inspired to start the podcast while watching Kevin Roses's 2009 FOWA presentation where he said all startups should be doing one.

- Between Tumblr & Feedburner it's incredibly easy to do one.

- I found that the mic in my MBP isn't quite good enough so I ordered a Rode Podcaster that I hope will get here in the next day or so.

I'm looking for some constructive feedback from the incredible HN crowd. Thanks
