jantissler··on I Tried Tesla FSD
But that's not enough. What about motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians? You will always have to deal with "meat brains".
jantissler··on Stop Saying AI
Probably only true until we achieve AGI, because then it has to be ASI at minimum. I wonder at what point the goal posts can't be moved anymore. Or will we always find some creative way to distance ourselves? I think sometimes this topic scares people so much they immediately get into denial mode.

And I'm not saying AGI is near. I have actually no idea if we need to wait for another breakthrough to enable that or not.

But it's still obvious that “true AI“ is for some people always what computers can't do yet.

jantissler··on Apple cider vinegar for weight management
Because I see a lot of confusion and wrong information in the comments: It is 15 ml (for our US friends: about 3 teaspoons) of Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in 250 ml (8.45 fluid oz) of water. That's a tiny amount of vinegar! You drink that every morning on an empty stomach.

Some people seem to think they are supposed to drink a glass of vinegar every day …

jantissler··on I Need AI
I used AI to summarize the article for me, before deciding whether to read the whole thing. I came here for the comments instead.
jantissler··on Ask HN: How to Overcome the Trough of Sorrow?
Well said!
jantissler··on Earth just experienced its hottest 12 months in recorded history
> Our ancestors survived ice ages.

I’m not sure if you are actually serious. They did not have billions of people relying on a very brittle global economy back in the day. They did not have cities with millions of people and an enormous infrastructure to keep these people alive.

jantissler··on Show HN: Galactic Compass – an app that points to the galactic center
I like that it’s in the category “Travel”
jantissler··on Mark Zuckerberg on Apple Vision Pro [video]
It's not bizarre at all unless Meta stops developing any future hardware and software for "mixed reality". We will see which features they change and add and also how they promote their devices going forward. I'm sure we will see similarities and people will declare in a few years that this is just how these devices work, totally forgetting how they used to work before Apple came along. It has happened now several times. It seems possible it will happen here again.
jantissler··on Pete Buttigieg Viral Tesla Truck Driver with Apple Vision Pro
I’m pretty sure it’s staged. The hand gestures are wrong. Similar, but wrong. There’s a certain set of gesture and some of theirs are not part of it. And you can keep your hands resting in your lap. No need to fumble around like this. My guess: Made for Internet fame. Luckily nobody got harmed …
jantissler··on Evernote will restrict free users to 50 notes starting December 4
I had been a paying Evernote customer since 2011 or so. But the drastic price increases were too much for me. I just didn't use it that much anymore. In hindsight, I should have cancelled earlier.

I ended up exporting everything and used Obsidian to convert my notes into Markdown files. I mostly use Apple Notes and Google Drive as a substitute. Works well enough for my use case.

jantissler··on Show HN: Trains.fyi – a live map of passenger trains in the US and Canada
That argument would only be valid if Germany was an island, though. But it's not. Lots of traffic coming through from all directions.
jantissler··on Show HN: Trains.fyi – a live map of passenger trains in the US and Canada
It is actually a problem in Germany that high-speed trains too often share tracks with slower passenger and freight trains. Other countries like Japan put their high-speed trains on completely separate tracks.
jantissler··on Andreessen Horowitz Invests in Civitai, Which Profits from Nonconsensual AI Porn
What a sensationalist headline … I thought 404 Media were supposed to be the good ones. Sad to see them go down that route so quickly.
jantissler··on The Humane AI Pin Launches Its Campaign to Replace Phones
That's a funny comment. I don't wear my phone on my chest all the time. If I'm outside it's in my pocket. If I have it in my hand, the camera is facing down. There's no comparison to this consumer grade bodycam.
jantissler··on The Humane AI Pin Launches Its Campaign to Replace Phones
But how practical is it really? Let's say it's winter, you have your AI Pin on your winter jacket. Then you get inside and take off your jacket naturally. Then you take off your AI Pin and somehow put both parts of it into and onto your sweater? This sounds very cumbersome. A smartwatch just stays on your wrist. You can even take a shower or go swimming with it if you want to. And a smartphone has a screen you can use in many situations – sitting, standing, lying, with the phone on your hand, lying on a table, attached to a stand. All of this is not possible with the AI Pin. It is meant to be attached to your clothing or you can't use its projector. How do you read your emails? How do you read a book? How do you frame a shot? How do you scroll through TikTok? These are all things people do with devices that cost way less than $700 today. And many, many people love to do these things.
jantissler··on Humane AI Pin
And a smartwatch offers a lot of health features, too! Something many people seem to find interesting and useful.

The watch is an accessory to the phone that adds features plus offers convenience and if you want to, it can temporarily substitute your phone like when you go to the gym. A cellular Apple Watch combined with Air Pods can do a lot. And both the Apple Watch and the Air Pods have use cases in addition to that in other situations. I don't see that here at all. I see a device with a very limited feature set.

Edit: Wording

jantissler··on Humane AI Pin
It even comes with a "Personic Speaker". From the website: "Ai Pin’s speaker system uses a Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to create a personally optimized bubble of sound, at a fixed distance, regardless of how soft or loud."
jantissler··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown escalates, aggravating users
Ah, I see: It's just $14/month or $168/year when I get it on desktop instead of the app. Still not competitive for me. But that's just me.
jantissler··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown escalates, aggravating users
Not for $20 dollars/month. I’ve already watched less and less YouTube because of the ads. It was worse than old school TV in the end. I realized: There’s tons of other great content out there. I don’t need YouTube at all. For the few videos I still watch, I would never pay $240/year. For me this price is not competitive to other offerings online. Not even close.
jantissler··on Invidious – An open source alternative front-end to YouTube
This is amazing. Thank you for that. I love the clean look of my empty homepage!
jantissler··on YouTube is cracking down on consumers' favorite loophole
I don’t think that YouTube Premium is a great offer. I won’t pay $19 every month. That is $228 a year! No, thank you. If there was a smaller tier around $5 with a limited number of ad-free videos, I might consider it. But there’s already way more content out there I could ever read, listen to or watch. $19 is steep.
jantissler··on Cannabis use disorder and subsequent risk of depression and bipolar disorder
Headline used here on HN is editorialized and misleading.
jantissler··on Show HN: A non-VC backed content creation and social media platform
I love the basic ideas behind it. I'm over "free" sites and services. I can't afford to pay for everything all the time, but I'm happy to do that for important ones. And online publishing is important to me.

I also like the idea behind the "personas" concept: I have many interests and roles and why not have one place where you can find all of it? Could be good.

After setting up my account I feel a bit overwhelmed though. And I'm not sure what to do next. The onboarding would probably better in stages. Right now I'm confronted with a wall of text and many unfamiliar concepts.

I would also question the wording of the main features. "Personas" or "expressions" are not self-explanatory. I have to read the explanation to understand what they are. I have a lot of things on my mind already and need to keep track of even more things in my life. This feels like I have to learn these concepts first before I can do anything. They're also defined in a circle:

> Personas: We have many talents and interests, persona is a way to group and present expressions and content in a cohesive way.

> Expressions: Expressions are added to your personas to showcase your awesome content. You can create them in personas.

I find that confusing.

Maybe an onboarding in stages would alleviate that. But I would also propose to rethink these terms and maybe look for something more familiar.

The form to add a new persona is also more for the tech people out there and not so much for a creative thinker. I am supposed to choose a "Slug"? I personally know what that is and why it might seem important. But I can see how confused other people would be who are just looking for a nice place to post their content.
