jansan··on How Singapore's government-run dating service works
You can try to replace women with bots, as those Chinese dating apps showed a few years ago:

jansan··on Wax motor
> They rarely fail and do their job even in damp environments. I take care of my better half's hotel with approx 100 of these installed and we replace one of these once every couple of years.

I had to replace about half of them within the first ten years of usage in our floor heating. It may have been a bad batch, but I would definitely not claim that the rarely fail. My car did not fail once during that time.

jansan··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Despite not being in the EU, Norway is European without the slightest doubt.
jansan··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
There is No Such Thing
jansan··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
Since a good LLM can handle any of those 40 web frameworks, I think having 40 web frameworks is becoming less of a problem than it used to be. Actually, implementing ideas in an individual manner will become easier. Remember the Bazaar and the Cathedral? The Bazaar kind of failed on the client side, but LLMs may revive it.
jansan··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
>For those of you who look down on IKEA furniture, I'd like to hear about what alternatives you think need mentioning.

I do not look down at IKEA, but there are things I would buy at IKEA and things I would not. For example I would not buy a sofa from IKEA. For this in Germany I found Bolia, who offer higher quality Scandinavian furniture with a not too outrageous pricetag.

jansan··on Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle
In 1991 Audi presented the Quattro Spyder, which had a detachable solar roof. The idea was to run a fan to prevent overheating of the interior.

And now they won't to power the entire car with energy from solar cells on the car? I have my doubts.

jansan··on The turbulent AI era is here
It's Ford Prefect
jansan··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Do you realize who Kafkaesque the discussion already has become?
jansan··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
I am pretty sure the reason for the ban lightbulbs was to push sales of fluorescent lamps before LEDs would finally take over. It came just when LED lamps were still too expensive to replace the light bulbs, so people were pushed into those crappy fluorescent lamps, only to have them replaced a few years later by the much better LEDs.
jansan··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Germany does an extra gold plating on every single EU regulation.
jansan··on Sydney Marathon medal mistakenly depicts Munich stadium
Allianz Marketing Head: My son's new favorite website is "Hackernews". They do not run ads, so how can we get the attention of their audience?
jansan··on English ↔ Claudish Translator
That is a very Claudish error message.
jansan··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
I love how the chose Verde, which means value, for their long time retired kitchen furniture. They were so good that they still sell above their original retail prices now.
jansan··on Claude: Elevated errors across all models
You are right to push back on this. I should be more explicit. My honest take is that this is, in fact, my honest take. I appreciate you holding me accountable here.
jansan··on Show HN: Full complex text shaping and rendering on ESP32 with 320KB usable RAM
I built an OpenType shaper and renderer that is nearly output-compatible with HarfBuzz. The focus was memory efficiency, so for the first time ever complex scripts like Devanagari, Arabic, and even Nastaliq can be fully rendered on memory-constrained systems such as an ESP32 with 320 KB of usable RAM.
jansan··on Claude Opus 5
I still do not understand how models can generate absolutely stunning SVG-like bitmaps of a pelican on a bicycle, but fail to do so when asked to directly create an SVG.

The image linked below was generated as a bitmap by Gemini and then manually converted to an SVG. Why can models not even remotely output something like that as SVG?

jansan··on Why do you suck at juggling now?
I can juggle pretty well with three objects, but I have no idea what the next step would be. Four feels like it would be no fun, because it is just juggling two balls in each hand. What is the recommended next step?
jansan··on Inkling: Our Open-Weights Model
Isn't that British?
jansan··on Germany’s Infineon opens major chip plant as EU seeks tech autonomy
Isn't that TSMC joint venture another plant that will open next year?
jansan··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
Let's not forget that Norway was heavily criticized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and several international health experts for its decision to permanently drop the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
jansan··on Marfa Public Radio Puts You to Sleep
Woke up too early this morning and tried it, after Mafra public radio did not work for me. This worked great, and now that I am listening to it again it is quite hilarious that I just cannot follow what he is talking about
jansan··on 22-year-old Mozart's handwritten notebook unearthed in 'major discovery'
Let's hope it is more authentic than the Hitler Diaries[1]

jansan··on Beyond All Reason (Free Total Annihilation Inspired RTS)
I remember trying that and did not like it. They did that 3D view that I just do not like in RTS games. 2.5D is the way to go IMO.
jansan··on Beyond All Reason (Free Total Annihilation Inspired RTS)
I had the most intense battles with my brother, even well into our 30s when we only met a few times a year.

It is sad that there never really was a successor that was as good. They could have lifted the 255 units limit, made the game more balanced, added a few more maps and units (but not too many), enhace the graphics (but keep it 2.5D, I do not want 3D in this kind of games) and make connectivity easier.

Cavedog released a fantasy game after that, which I wanted to like, but it was crap. And the Command & Conquer games were never for me. Tried them but never felt them.

jansan··on Hyundai buys Boston Dynamics
This is a bit disappointing, isn't it? Boston Dynamics had the coolest robots and everybody was marveling how they would take over the world eventually. Turns out the market isn't gigantic and the use cases are limited, at least for now.

However, let's hope they will keep on doing cool stuff under their new owner.

jansan··on I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle
"I does not boot and it makes me sad"

I actually write prompts like that when I'm not under pressure. Claude will sometimes completely ignore your feelings, and sometimes give a little comment, which I just find refreshing in the middle of otherwise often boring sessions. And it does not have an effect on the actual result.

jansan··on GLM-5.2 is the new leading open weights model on Artificial Analysis
Mo Bitar said something like "Meta's LLM is the one you use if you accidentially hit the wrong button in WhatsApp. Its user base is fat-finger phone users."
jansan··on I Could've Rickrolled the FIFA World Cup. All I Needed Was My ID
Are you trying to trick me into writing something here that I would later regret?
jansan··on I Could've Rickrolled the FIFA World Cup. All I Needed Was My ID
> Replace that, and every TV network receiving the FIFA feed shows whatever you pushed.

Holy shit, Rickrolling is among the more harmless things you could have done with that.
