jann··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
I'm also curious if you 'died at Burning Man' if you're attending BM, fell ill, made it to a hospital and then died.
jann··on Apple Watch Series 12
It works fine now.
jann··on GPT-6 Astra
Is that alone really a better metric? At least in Europe a lot of people travel during holidays, so there's less risk breaking into city flats because they're empty.
jann··on Sick leave: Germany rising but not the worst in Europe
That's the whole point, before they would only need to do it on the fourth day of sickness, now you need to go to a doctor on the first day. More workload for doctors and either sick people coming to the office infecting others, or getting the whole week off immediately.
jann··on Elevated errors on Claude.ai, API, Claude Code
I guess it depends on who you ask, Anthropic says 99.26%: https://status.claude.com
jann··on Claude Code Routines
I have the same sentiments, but I also get a lot of value out of simple things like memory for long-term project planning and task management. I'm willing to commit to one provider right now with the assumption that memories (and now routines) can be ported within a few hours to a new provider (for example Claude Desktop provides a prompt to export memories from other providers). Also the memory being human readable (markdown files) makes me worry less about lock-in.
jann··on Show HN: NukeCast – If it happened today, where would the fallout go
It complements https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ nicely. As someone not living in the US, I'd find it interesting to at least have some other non-US cities available in the free plan though.
jann··on Travel in Style. UniFi Style. UniFi Travel Router
Did anyone see a price mentioned? It would be nice to have a travel router that just plugs into your UniFi network.
jann··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
I got gifted Computer Engineering for Babies and big Babies last Christmas in preparation for having our first child :) They are great!
jann··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
Being on the receiving side of that can be very frustrating. Even though users can cancel easily and without any human interaction, they cancel their credit card which then costs us multiple months of revenue in cancellation fees.
jann··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
Instead of allowing 24 hours, I prefer to agree on a start time with the candidate, schedule the email to go out at that time and expect to receive the reply two hours later. That way everyone has the same amount of time.
jann··on Apple says photos in iCloud will be checked by child abuse detection system
Messaging apps like WhatsApp will save to your photo library though (unless disabled).

So any photo sent to you would be scanned. If you someone sent you a bunch of files, that might trigger a manual review, that would most likely flag your account.

I wouldn't expect that immediately deleting them would stop the review process.

jann··on Show HN: FalsiScan – Make it look like a PDF has been hand signed and scanned
I only had issues so far when I accidentally didn’t convert the signed page back to an image.
jann··on Hardware Microphone Disconnect in Mac and iPad
Just a warning (I don’t know the specs of that ThinkPad) but just because it’s a physical switch doesn’t mean it actually physically disconnects the device.
jann··on Guide to running Elasticsearch in production
I can't answer for cloakandswagger, but GPs comment sounded to me like this blog post is missing something essential because it doesn't talk about security.

This isn't an expensive course on setting up the perfect ES cluster in production.

As someone who is currently planning to set up a substantial ES cluster, I'm very grateful for someone to write up their learnings in such a compact overview.

jann··on What Is Color Management?
Isn't that what Apple's "True Tone" is about? (I just know of that one, but probably there's something similar on Android devices)
jann··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2019)

jann··on AWS Customers Rack Up Hefty Bills for Moving Data
But in all fairness, if you actually implement that ”best practice” HA infrastructure, you will also be miles ahead of almost all internal IT departments.
jann··on Uber makes JFK airport helicopter taxis available to all users
It takes fuel (onboard) + oxygen (environment) to create the CO2. I assume that’s where the additional mass comes from.
jann··on Stackoverflow is down
Correction: Now they’re back up, but in read-only mode

"We're having a SQL Server instability issue and digging into it now."

jann··on Name one thing in this photo
I'm only reading about people getting really uncomfortable looking at this (on reddit).

To me it did nothing, although I also couldn't recognise any of the items in the picture.

Does anyone else have the same experience?

jann··on When to Buy Your Own ISBNs
The FAQ of the company responsible for selling ISBNs in Germany (1000 ISBNs cost ~310 EUR incl. VAT here) states that the country of the publisher is the decisive factor on where to buy the ISBNs. So if a book written by the author got translated to German, would he have to buy a German ISBN?

Otherwise he could just acquire all his ISBNs in Canada for free?

jann··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
Note: Lynx is called Axe in other countries.

I was just thinking how a terminal web browser gets you laid :)

jann··on The Fallen of World War II – An Interactive, Data-Driven Documentary
Actually, is there some analysis on that?

I always suspected that, with all the high-tech equipment, after the initial stockpile is gone (and a few hundred planes is not a lot if you look at WW2), it's much harder to scale up production (if one country alone even produces all the necessary parts like semiconductors, rocket engines, etc.).

jann··on CloudFlare “Interview Questions”
I was actually asked some of these for a position in a SRE team. So these are interview questions you might encounter.
jann··on Intel Compute Stick
He meant sites offering you a free product or a months worth of credit for sending a message to X of your friends if they sign up as well (and if they're smart they get your friends email addresses like that even if they don't sign up)
jann··on ASMR: The videos which claim to make their viewers 'tingle'
This is really fascinating, I didn't know about ASMR until now, but I'm experiencing the feeling since childhood.

I found it so cool as a child that I trained myself to reproduce it without any external stimulus or thought pattern.

jann··on Higher antioxidant, lower cadmium, and lower pesticide residues in organic crops [pdf]
Why is the difference between US and UK regulations important for the results? As far as I understood from the press release the study was conducted in the UK with UK products.
