jankotek··on قلب: a non-ASCII programming language written in Arabic
Scala supports not just variables, but operators. * or + are not part of language, but methods in library.
jankotek··on قلب: a non-ASCII programming language written in Arabic
Scala supports Unicode characters in identifiers. It would be interesting to know your take on that.
jankotek··on “We have no reason to believe 5G is safe”
5G is really replacement for a WIFI.
jankotek··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
XPS 13, onsite service is great and is also easy to replace parts by yourself.
jankotek··on Uptime 15,364 days – The Computers of Voyager [video]
We rebooted system as part of training every two years, new staff needed to know how it is done :-)
jankotek··on Switzerland vs Silicon Valley for Software Developers
Fair enough, Zurich is a nice city and its worth it. But recommending it for affordable rent...
jankotek··on Switzerland vs Silicon Valley for Software Developers
Rent in Zurich is $4000 a month and that as an advantage? Is that a joke? Many workers in Switzerland commute daily from foreign countries to save money.
jankotek··on AMD's Upcoming Ryzen 9 3900 Listed with 12 Zen 2 Cores at 65W
Not the same chip, quality differs, some units would require higher voltage for the same frequency. Some CPUs are more power efficient because they can take lover voltage.
jankotek··on Huawei Mate 30 phones launch without Google apps
> firm had set aside $1bn (£801m) to encourage developers to make their apps compatible

It also launched without Google Services. This could be great push towards completely open sourced Android platform.

jankotek··on AgileFall – When Waterfall Sneaks Back into Agile
Sounds quite valid. Microchip have N inputs for N buttons, functions are solved in firmware, some inputs may not be used.
jankotek··on The discovery of the ancient Greek city of Tenea
Your argument is "there were dialects and local variants". That was true everywhere until 1st WW and mass media.

Could we agree that Athens and Syracuse were more similar than Athens and Persepolis?

How about common myths and goods? Olympic games that paused wars? Delphi were in "center" of helenic world? And ancient debate if Macedonians are "true Greeks" or "barbarians"?

jankotek··on The discovery of the ancient Greek city of Tenea
Greeks had unified culture. There was the same language, lifestyle, music, alphabet, commerce, art style, military style... They called people outside their culture "barbaros".
jankotek··on Being ‘Indistractable’
I hope not. Many people in open-space offices with smart phones have attention span of a chipmunk. That makes it possible for remote workers to compete :-)
jankotek··on A man repopulated a rare butterfly species in his backyard (2016)
I searched a bit. This species is not endangered, it is spread over CA, just very very rare in SF. (Also there might be a subspecies, not really sure).

What makes you think that money would be well spend? I think most people would still sit on their asses watching netflix... now with a fancy job title and paycheck.

This butterfly is amazing and with good story, crowdfunding should be doable. Also Bay area already spends several billions on environmental protections, why this budget did not cover this project?

It has smaller resolution compared to older Saturn images.

jankotek··on An open society, Canada’s best response to immigration
No sources, just anoctal evidence (I travel around middle east). Turkey, Lebanon, Saudi... 28k seems like very small number on global scale, tiny Lebanon has 1M.
jankotek··on An open society, Canada’s best response to immigration
> resettling more refugees than any other country in the world

> Since 2017, approximately 150,000 asylum seekers have claimed protection

This is pretty low number. Many countries took millions of refugees.

jankotek··on Want 1.5TB of RAM in Your PC? It Will Cost You
Hardware is dirt cheap today. 256GB RAM fits into normal high end workstation.
jankotek··on Mapped: The world’s coal power plants
> Germany probably didn't go down this path due to coal lobbying

Germany and Austria is strongly anti-atom. It comes from cold war where Germany was primary nuclear target for Soviets and US.

jankotek··on GitHub stars won’t pay your rent
I have a consulting business centered around my OS project. Project itself does not make much, but related things (support, consulting, opportunities, contacts) are good. It was a good way to leave cubicle and get remote job, once my daughter was born.
jankotek··on Turning a MacBook into a Touchscreen with $1 of Hardware (2018)
Long time ago there was an ad PC vs Mac. PC guy had usb camera tapped on top of his head, claiming how PC are entering new modern age. Mac had camera build in. This kind of feels similar.
jankotek··on ‘Just four dudes’: Inside EasyList, a community-run ad-blocking list
They would have to change URL to those pages
jankotek··on Microsoft turns an obsession with detail into micron-optimized keyboards
Micron-optimized keyboard sounds like horrible reliability. Speck of dust and laptop is ruined (Surface laptops can not be repaired in non-destructive way).

I had 4x Natural 4000 keyboards, they had constant problems due to bad design. Space bar got stuck. Keyboard wiring was prone to corrosion and shortcuts, keys would randomly stop working. Had to disassemble keyboard, wash inside with mild acid and leave it to dry.

At end I did this repair once a month and had multiple keyboards on rotation. I put up with that, there was no alternative at that time.

jankotek··on Melissa Di Donato Appointed CEO of SUSE
From top of my head:

- Redhat and Suse have LONG binary compatibility, like 20 years. Debian has 3 or 5 years?

- If something goes wrong, you can sue and get something. Debian has no money.

- Redhat and Suse actually develops linux kernel, underlying filesystems etc... Very important if you have weird concurrent database issue on large cluster.

- Debian is political and has no commercial predictability. For example there is very small chance it may decide to abandon systemd and move to something else.

- Commercial certification; you wont get SAP R/3 or Oracle support contract for Debian, even if would manage to install it.
