jankotek··on Delphi's 25th Birthday
Delphi 1 on Win 3.11 and 4MB RAM. Long long time ago.
jankotek··on An optimization to help code compilation times on big CPUs
Maybe there is a good reason for that.

There are already dozens of alternatives to GNU Make. Linux already did something similar with Git.

jankotek··on An Economist’s Guide to Potty Training
Start much much earlier on 6 month old. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/7-months-old-potty-train-her/
jankotek··on Tesla remotely removed autopilot features from used Tesla without notice
Tesla is kind of hostile to second hand market. No spare parts , no service history info, unauthorized repair disables charging etc.. Basically Apple mentality.

Car with a good maintenance should last 20 years. Not like a phone that gets thrown away every 5 years.

jankotek··on Simple text editor has over 15k monthly users
Does it run on DOS?
jankotek··on Google tracks individual users per Chrome installation ID
There is a Chromium fork that does that already.
jankotek··on AMD Threadripper 3990X 64-Core beats dual Xeon Platinum 8280 in benchmark leak
I have 2600k under water cooling for 8 years, uptime is probably 25%.
jankotek··on NetBSD 9.0 Coming Soon with Arm64, Updated ZFS, HW-Accelerated Virtualization
Could you elaborate on hw support? In my experience Linux has much better support for old obscure hardware. Some things got drivers for WinXP, maybe Win 7, but not in 10. Windows can not even boot up on some older x86 processors. And windows on ARM...
jankotek··on “Google Drive” would like to receive keystrokes from any application
XWin app can listen to all keystrokes in system. This was fixed in Wayland.
jankotek··on Verlan: French slang that inverses words
Pin and P.I.N. (spelled out) are two different words in reality.
jankotek··on ThinkPad Mods, Done Right
There is viable market (it has customers). But I would say it is just nostalgia. Some people even say it is not real ThinkPad unless it was made by IBM (pre 2006).
jankotek··on Artificial intelligence will do what we ask, and that's a problem
I think authors do not understand basic rules of Asimovs universe.

Robotics laws are unbreakable limits hardwired into every positronic brains. On top of those you can put some other programming (servant, mining machine, space ship...). It is not possible to create brain without those rules.

Asimov universe explores machine learning, autonomous weapons, humanity etc using those principles.

New proposed laws are just tautology, "do what people want". No limits, no orders...

What should machine do if no people are around? Just sit idle?

What if majority behaves in "wrong" way (vote extremist politician)?

I would expect some other laws, for example there should be always an option for people to opt-out or leave country.

jankotek··on To Build Truly Intelligent Machines, Teach Them Cause and Effect (2018)
I think you are underestimating early humans. Friction creates heat, fire is heat...
jankotek··on SQLite Is Serverless
I think better name (and coined since 1990ies) is embedded db engine. MySQL, Firebird (InterBase) etc can also be linked into binary and run in the same process, without any type of sockets.
jankotek··on Laptop OEMs – make a proper high-end AMD laptop
> Ultramobile, slim, and desktop replacements

No! I want proper thick modular 17" desktop replacement with 256GB RAM. Platform that would replace old Thinkpads.

jankotek··on AMD’s 64-Core Threadripper 3990X, only $3990 Coming February 7th
7 years ago it was doable to build similar desktop at similar price from refurbished server (4x6core Opteron CPU, 128GB DDR2 ECC RAM). It took about 1KW and was loud, but great complement for performance testing.

BTW I seen 64GB DDR4 sticks on amazon...

jankotek··on One-quarter of the world’s pigs died in a year due to swine fever in China
Clickbaitish title, most pigs are slaughtered before reaching one year of age.
jankotek··on Debian votes for Proposal B, “Systemd but we support exploring alternatives”
Some people love systemd. Finally you can reliably manage system daemons, WinNT had this 20 years ago.
jankotek··on Typing inside of the default WSL terminal feels amazing (2018)
Long time ago we used RXVT because XTerm and ATerm were both too slow
jankotek··on ZedRipper: A 16-core Z80 laptop
not really, for example context menus in Xorg are modal windows, it would be very hard to show two menus at the same time
jankotek··on Steve Jobs: Out for Revenge (1989)
unix (posix) is dead, linux killed it
jankotek··on Cairo Desktop Environment
Back in 2003 I used Litestep. It was scriptable modular windows shell. It had integration with IMs (Miranda), mail, weather, voice control... Sometimes I feel like technology is evolving backwards.
jankotek··on Say it's 1962, you're lucky enough to be a programmer working with an IBM 7090
My father used similar punch cards at his works way into 80ties (socialist country). Every shopping list in my childhood was written on those
jankotek··on Improving CLIs with isatty
Exactly, this is not an improvement, but makes it worse.
jankotek··on How can you know what news is real?
Eating junk food is not healthy...
jankotek··on Microsoft's “Love” of Linux
Wine is actually more compatible with older apps than Win32 implementation in Win10. Better alternative would be to extend Wine.
jankotek··on Farewell, Cortana
Windows Server 2016 (Desktop Experience). Choosing this option is useful when a GUI is required; for example, to provide backward compatibility for an application that cannot be run on a Server Core installation. All server roles and features are supported. This configuration is the equivalent of Server Graphical Shell on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Maybe he wants GUI experience, like Win NT

jankotek··on AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Review
It was good complement for light laptop.
jankotek··on AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Review
I had 24 core workstation 5 years ago for price of this single chip. Refurbished server...
jankotek··on Explaining 4K 60Hz Video Through USB-C Hub
I use display-link dongle as port of USB-C docking station. It plugs and unplugs well, but driver uses a lot of cpu and there is no graphic acceleration. Not sure if would handl 4k video. Great for IDE.
