jankassens··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
Spotify has been running an exclusive high-profile podcast in Germany for multiple years now. It was previously running on radio and regular podcasts ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fest_%26_Flauschig )

It's surprising to me that popular, platform exclusive audio content isn't happening faster. All video platforms have it.

jankassens··on Bye, Amazon
To me, the door of the building seems to be a pretty clear line.

For a fixed location job, the commute is fully under control of the employee and fair not to count as hours.

For variable location jobs like in construction, my view is that potential additional commute time should be compensated.

jankassens··on Disney claims anyone using a Twitter hashtag is agreeing to their terms of use
They could contact the authors and ask them for permission explicitly instead of saying in a random tweet somewhere that a hashtag opts you in to agree to anything.
jankassens··on Chloroquine trial halted after 11 patients die on high dose
Experts that say that a solution in form of vaccine is 1 year out don't offer immediate help. If some self-appointed expert claims to have a solution, a politician might take a bet on that solution and either later claim they were first to bet big on the solution or just move on to the next bet or blaming of someone else later.
jankassens··on Newly unemployed New Yorkers are being frustrated by 1970s-era technology
Maybe more funding to increasing salaries for government employees would be a good start instead of more funding in order to hire more people/bloat the system. I think it could over time make government agency work more attractive and prestigious and in turn attract the best talent.
jankassens··on Airbnb Racks Up Hundreds of Millions in Losses Due to Coronavirus
Airbnb turns housing into hotels. Typically those are zoned differently, potentially subsidizing housing for locals at the cost of driving up prices for travelers.
jankassens··on San Francisco bans public events holding more than 1,000 people
If they don't want to ban all public activity, they have to pick some number. I suppose they don't want to shut a small concerts at bars with 50 people or a local comedy club (yet).

Banning large conferences or sport events with people likely coming from further away seems like a good start.

jankassens··on ExpressJS vs. Actix-Web: performance and running cost comparison
Even if you think a compiled language will be faster, it might still be interesting by roughly how much (5%, 10x or 100x?). This can help make the trade off decision.
jankassens··on Visa is planning the biggest changes to merchant fees in a decade
And the published fees for large supermarkets are going down. Probably because they have the leverage and could even shape consumer behavior by making them used to some alternative.
jankassens··on Apple may have to abandon Lightning connector cable
I was thinking they might keep the lightning standard until they would finally remove all connectors from iPhones. But then the whole AirPower charging pad didn’t work out, so not sure why they wouldn’t switch over finally.
jankassens··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
I’d start with assuming everyone’s experience is normal distributed. Someone who always voted 3 stars probably had the same experience as someone who always voted 5 stars. I’d try out computing the normal distribution of the rater and see where on the distribution this particular vote fell.
jankassens··on Why iOS 13 and Catalina Are So Buggy
Exactly, a long time between releases pushes teams to get their feature into this release even if just 90% ready. If the Mail.app team could ship updates not just annually, I’m sure they’d make faster progress and ship more stable releases.
jankassens··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
This appears to be a joint effort with Lyft.

jankassens··on CEO of Marriott Statements About Hotel Fees Customers Loathe
An aggregator could offer a checkbox to include fees or make users otherwise aware of that fact. Would definitely differentiate that aggregator for me!
jankassens··on Saudi airline cancels $6B Boeing order in favor of Airbus
I don't understand this backlog for airplanes (Boeing and Airbus): Is this kind of backlog normal in industrial scale? Is it not viable to scale up production with the massive tail of suppliers that would all need to scale up?
jankassens··on Negotiations Failed: How Oracle Killed Java EE
Would it also be ridiculous if a factory worker would be employed in one country and just cross the border to do a bit of factory work? All kinds of other local laws apply just by entering a country. How is minimum wage different?
jankassens··on Facebook, Instagram go down around the world in an apparent outage

jankassens··on How Facebook tracks you on Android [video]
35C3, CCC's annual main conference is currently going on.
jankassens··on SF fines two landords $2.25M for illegal Airbnb rentals
This is nothing new. There are many zoning laws restricting what you can do with your land: What can you build? Is commercial and/or residential use allowed? It's very much in line to say if a unit can be used as a hotel-like or not.
jankassens··on How I Lent My Camera Kit and Had It ‘Legally Stolen’
0.02% of rentals is also not 0.02% of gear value rented. I'd assume "voluntary parting" would occur on the higher value rentals.

jankassens··on Facebook Location History View
Did they go on a long distance vacation every year? They're probably a good target for travel ads. They're probably also in a higher income bracket then someone who's only going on local trips.
jankassens··on SEC filing suggests MoviePass’ time is running out
It also appears to be EUR 20 per month. MoviePass is less then half that at USD 10. Often less then a single regular movie ticket.
jankassens··on Facebook Q1 2018 Earnings Slides [pdf]
From a footnote on those slides:

> The numbers for DAUs and MAUs do not include Instagram, WhatsApp, or Oculus users unless they would otherwise qualify as such users, respectively, based on their other activities on Facebook.

jankassens··on React Native and Yoga Both Given MIT Licence by Facebook
I would recommend taking a look at Litho (Android) and ComponentKit (iOS). Both frameworks by Facebook and inspired by the React component model for pure native development.
jankassens··on Three months of content moderation for Facebook in Berlin

jankassens··on Apple Developer Program Membership Fee Waivers Now Available
Avoids people becoming "developers" who just want to side load apps by installing developer versions.

It's also an easy way to fight spam by reducing to serious accounts and allowing manual review.

jankassens··on Five minute guide to better typography

jankassens··on [dead]
You can use any email address in the git commit metadata. If you use Linus' email, Github shows the commit as created by Linus.

If you want other people to be able to verify you actually created a commit/tag, git allows to sign objects with a PGP key.

jankassens··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
