I'm kept wondering how the whole npm structure will look like. At the bottom of npmjs.org it states: 'Powered by Joyent', but Nodejitsu ran the 'Scale npm' donation campaign to get funds to scale the public npm registry. But Nodejitsu acquired IrisCouch and now offers private npm services.

And now izs starts a new company npm inc. that will, well, who knows. But he's former Joyent who power npm, so will running npm transfer to npm inc.? But how does Nodejitsu or the 300K that they raised with their campaign fit into this picture?

Bespin was merged into it, yes. But there have not been major contributions by Mozilla in recent times.

I'm very surprised about this. If Google would say that teams that only consist of men, or white people would get $2K extra everyone would explode.

I would not be surprised to see StrongLoop fork node.

I've f.e. used https://github.com/lloyd/node-compute-cluster which basically is a broker between various computation processes in node.

Joyent has izs, that's mainly it. Strongloop does biggest part of development, and before Strongloop it was Cloud9.

I guess putting node in a foundation would make the most sense.

At the moment I scribble on his/her business card why a person I meet is important and send a follow up later based on that info.

Software is not just development, there is also a maintenance perspective. If I have a bug report in a complex piece of code it's a lot easier for me to write a test that covers the use case and work from there then building, fireing up a test device, etc.

Or when refactoring a piece of code that renders UI, write some tests to verify a couple of common cases and then refactor. Run the tests and I'll know whether the output is the same.

Agree 100%. I basically see all really good engineers either flying out to SF or working from home while being employed by a SF company. Mainly because of the complete lack of appreciation (in hard cash) by companies here. I myself are working for Norwegian company from Amsterdam.

Something to add as well: failure is accepted in the Valley. It's part of the way to success. In the Netherlands you will get BURNED for life. First of all, failing the company and being stuck with personal debt? The only way to get rid of it is to go into 'schuldhulpverlening' (debt helping something), which will mean you will have to live of 30 euro's a week for three years and can't get any bank loans in the first five years after it. Second, an entrepreneur that went bankrupt will have a stain on himself forever, both with banks, as well as investors.

Then there is the complete difference in how investors work between the Valley and Netherlands. When my previous employer was raising money (the company was about 10 persons in size) the only way to get money out of Dutch investors was to replace the management team, whereas they eventually raised 5M in SF. No business plan or no experienced CEO? There is the door. Seed money? There are a few funds that provide it but it's hard to get around to it.

Firefox OS already uses the same model, push notifications will fire up the application, the application can then decide to create a notification, to update the internal cache to reflect the latest changes; it's called the Simple Push API[1]. It can also wake up the application every X minutes to pull the data (Alarms API[2]) and do the same thing.

Interesting to see that this also plays in the USA. Largest opinion magazine in the Netherlands had a big article about how today it's a status symbol not to have a car, because for young people it's associated with living on the countryside where it's impossible to get around without one; and living on the countryside means general lower education, lower pay, for people in their 20s/30s. Not surprisingly: the car as a status symbol still exists there. Wondering if this also goes for the USA...

I believe that whois does a wildcard search for all domains known to start with microsoft.com, and some funny people registered subdomains under their own domains that start with microsoft.com. But maybe I'm wrong :-)

Contrary to Windows Phone, FxOS is not aiming to be competing against the high end Android or iOS devices. Nor will it be appealing to current consumers who have a smartphone in their pockets. It's targeting consumers that currently hold feature phones (mostly Nokia) that can either not afford a smartphone, or just a very low-end Android that performs terrible. FxOS is not here to be the ultimate OS for developers, but to bring a fully featured smartphone experience to Latin America, South East Asia, Balkans, etc.

I'm using it as an everyday device. It's not perfect, but it's usable, especially when considering the low price point.

But now you're comparing unoptimized javascript to java, instead of asm.js.

Nope. So far Latin America (Telefonica), Poland (Deutsche Telekom), Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro (all Telenor) have been confirmed for a launch this year.

A bizarre number considering that the total number of contributors on the Firefox OS frontend is currently 249 (https://github.com/mozilla-b2g/gaia). No clue on which part they're gonna put these people on.

As someone doing quite some interviews for a Norwegian company a cover letter should just be a couple of lines describing some practicalities, like why you'd want to join my team over any other team in the company and from which office you'd like to work. Other than that I'll mainly look at online presence, GH, SO, etc. CV is not that interesting because I probably don't know the companies you worked before anyway.

Release 1.1 that will contain a lot of polish will come out in November and will then be launched in Eastern Europe on Telenor markets.

Well, because I have been waiting for global screen orientation lock ever since I got a Lumia 800 (1,5 years ago). Still nothing to be seen.
