janice1999··on LineageOS 23
You can't blame the EU for Google pulling developer support for devices or holding back security patches.

There are pros and cons to "big bloc regulation". You can go and start a phone company since so many things are standarised but the main constraint will be who you source a modem from and the lack of choice will be because of patents (see Apple vs Qualcomm).

janice1999··on Flock's gunshot detection microphones will start listening for human voices
If that was true, there would be no crime in London.

The current system is all downsides - no privacy while the police ignore crimes like bike thefts despite ample CCTV coverage. Worse, CCTV and other surveillance tools are used with glee to target protestors who the government dislike.

janice1999··on EPA tells some scientists to stop publishing studies
Culling staff and organisations in ways that lead to bottlenecks or institutional disorder is a classic suppression and censorship tactic. It's naive to think otherwise, especially given the current leadership.
janice1999··on TikTok Sold for $14B
"In recent weeks, powerful politicians, including senators Josh Hawley and Marco Rubio and House Representative Mike Gallagher, have reiterated calls for a ban on TikTok, citing the app’s alleged bias towards anti-Israel and anti-Jewish content."

janice1999··on Unlocking a Million Times More Data for AI
Think-tank wants to enable companies get access to private medical and other personal data. "Solution" to privacy "problem" sounds like a blockchain pitch circa-2019. Wonderful.
janice1999··on EU age verification app not planning desktop support
>Not in EU.

Please stop spreading disinformation. I live in the EU and my EU bank supports desktop browsers + Card reader matching everything the mobile app can do.

janice1999··on Show HN: An Open Source XR(AR/VR) Operating System
Exactly this. The kernel seems like the least interesting part of an AR system. Also targeting x86, ARM and RISC-V for a new kernel is such a huge workload it makes no sense not to just re-use something already existing.

> If you think about it though, someone knowledgeable enough to write this paper is exactly the kind of person you'd want to serve as an expert witness.

Maybe, but the same was also true of the now disgraced Andrew Wakefield, although his conflict of interest was even greater since he didn't reveal his funding before publishing his original paper.

janice1999··on The thousands of atomic bombs exploded on Earth (2015)
The authors overt nationalistic tone is really at odds with reality. There are no "good guys" when it came to nuclear weapons testing. The UK nuclear weapons tests in Australia were also a disaster for locals and poisoned large areas.
janice1999··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
They can choose not to enforce it. The problem is that both Google and other phone manufacturers are making custom ROMS more difficult (restricting access to binaries needed to get the phone to work, not providing bootloader unlock etc). The other issue is if governments choose to go after them. Some police services are already trying to equate custom ROMS, and in particular GrapheneOS, with criminal drug-dealing gangs.
janice1999··on U.S. guided-missile cruiser crosses Panama Canal, warships deployed to Venezuela
Just like the Taliban.
janice1999··on U.S. guided-missile cruiser crosses Panama Canal, warships deployed to Venezuela
Why? Panama was a dictatorship ruled by a drugs lord in the 1980s. It's now a democratic country with competitive elections and orderly rotations of power.
janice1999··on Petition to stop Google from restricting sideloading and FOSS apps
Petitioning EU lawmakers would be better. American control of European data is already a bit issue at the moment in the face of US threats over Digital taxes and Microsoft being used to punish ICJ members.

> You can publish any android app you want, that doesn't give you the right to anonymously deploy those apps on everyone's personal tracking devices (phones).

This is about users freedom to install apps on the devices they own.

> non-google-certified android builds/installs

Those targets are rapidly disappearing. Alternative Android ROMs are dying one by one. Look at how few modern phones are officially supported by LineageOS. And many of those are Pixels which Google is no longer releasing binaries for (making ROM builders lives harder).

> Do you guys understand that people's lives are being ruined by malware?

Do you have figures to back that up? There are already multiple warnings when sideload apps.

> For about a decade now, on Windows, you are required to have an ID-verified code signing certificate so sign drivers for example.

Drivers and applications are not the same things.

janice1999··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
I'm the same. No Google account since 2012. F-Droid is an amazing community effort and has enabled me to find so many great open source applications.
janice1999··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
AOSP is being killed piece by piece - zero community engagements, infrequent dumps with no commit logs, moving everything into Google Play services and recently no more binaries for Pixel phones just to make third party ROM developers lives a little more miserable.
janice1999··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
> Imagine MS doing the same for Windows.

They already have a version of that - it's called Windows S Mode (Windows Store apps only, no EXEs or scripts, Edge only for browsing). If they get away with it, they would make it the default. Required Microsoft accounts was a step in that direction.

janice1999··on US attack on renewables will lead to power crunch that spikes electricity prices
> Europe absolutely spent many years phasing out nuclear energy

Germany is not Europe. Over 70% of electricity in France is nuclear and they have plans to build at least 6 EPR2 plants.

janice1999··on Europe's Free-Speech Problem
Absolutely, at least they had to honesty to include what she said - incitement to mass murder immigrants and politicians - while there were rioters actively attacking hotels and mosques and after 2 MPs were murdered in office. The rest of the article is the same predictable hand-wringing over EU countries (whose actions are concerning), while white-washing what the US does. For example:

> ...the administration suspended her visa and put her in immigration detention.

In that case the student was grabbed off the street by masked men (which bystanders thought was a kidnapping) and disappeared to another state (against judge's orders), kept in dire conditions, with her friends/family/lawyer initially not knowing what happened is.

janice1999··on What makes Claude Code so damn good

janice1999··on Coinbase CEO explains why he fired engineers who didn't try AI immediately
Not surprising. This is one of the CEOs who wants "special economic zones", i.e. a place where they can be fedual lords.
janice1999··on Coinbase CEO explains why he fired engineers who didn't try AI immediately
What's telling is that, even if his story is remotely true, his target audience for this tale are people who won't blink at potentially destroying peoples lives just for corporate point scoring or, worse, terrorising surviving employees into blindly obeying questionable actions. Anyone with an ounce of empathy would think how terrible it would be to be fired and maybe lose your home or end up in debt because your insane boss bought into the latest fad.
janice1999··on In 2006, Hitachi developed a 0.15mm-sized RFID chip
The RFID vaccine conspiracy was inspired by another, very different technology Bill Gates helped fund - microneedle vaccines with quantum dot records. I guess RFID was easier for people to understand and it became the go-to conspiracy instead.

janice1999··on Intel 80286 emulator for Raspberry Pico
Anyone else instantly turned away by the LLM emoji bullet points?

This project could be the work of an enthusiastic developer with a deep understanding/love of the 80286 or LLM slop based on regurgitated code stolen from years of hard work by dedicated retro emulator developers. Unfair or not, emoji bullet points do not give confidence it's the first.
