janderland··on Golang and Containers Perf Gotcha – Gomaxprocs
If you’re building something front scratch, the architecture/modeling/abstraction work is done first. This sounds like a scaling issue, and a simpler one at that. As for harder problems, we’ve had to rearchitect parts of our software several times as it scaled.

So yea, I can understand why you’d find this kind of work annoying, but in my experience it’s mixed in with more traditional harder problems.

janderland··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
Strange take. These things are being put forward by major companies who hire very good engineers. Riot Games makes the most popular game in the entire world (League of Legends) and they use kernel-level anti-cheating. I interviewed with them and found their test to be one of the more difficult ones I’ve taken. I’m not under the impression they lack the necessary knowledge.
janderland··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
Reports only work so well. Overwatch has MANY cheater in spite of vigorous reporting.
janderland··on What's New in POSIX 2024
This is pretty standard for a human run system. Gotta make the human feel good about an idea before they can do said idea.

If you’re not familiar with humans, there are several manuals available online.

janderland··on Kroger and Walmart deny 'surge pricing' after adopting digital price tags
Aren’t these already concerns now? A store could raise the price before you arrive and you’d be stuck with that price or need to go to another store.
janderland··on "Somebody Tranq That Child!"
Detached from YOUR reality. Not everyone dislikes their family, though I’m personally with you in that I wouldn’t want to live with mine.
janderland··on Wired's Attack on Privacy
This is not true. We’ve all observed how differently people behave online. The anonymity aspect creates different social outcomes.

While there are arguments for preserving encryption, acting like online communication is the same as face to face is disingenuous.

janderland··on Jazz – Apps with Distributed State
I’m also experiencing issues with the website. I when to the docs page and accidentally pressed back in my browser, after which the forward button wouldn’t work to undo the back operation.

Seems like the website breaks basic browser navigation.

janderland··on Ask HN: What reasonable person would work as a founding engineer?
This is a bit idealistic. The reasonable man can work the change the world slowly. He may not see change in his lifetime, but he can help move the needle.
janderland··on Auto brewer gut syndrome and goldfish crackers
You could change your diet to prevent the reaction in your stomach from happening.
janderland··on We've Got Depression All Wrong. It's Trying to Save Us
Yes. I think these are related. I’ve struggled with depression for most of my life and “learned helplessness” is something that intuitively matches my thought patterns.
janderland··on We've Got Depression All Wrong. It's Trying to Save Us
What’s this from?
janderland··on Build an Infinite Canvas
The only way an infinite canvas makes sense is if the diagram guides the user. You can’t rely on simply going to the next page anymore, so it does take some extra effort to get it right.
janderland··on Mushroom edibles are making people sick. Scientists still don't know why
Regulation is part of the problem. I haven’t seen any evidence that 4-aco-dmt is any more dangerous than psilocybin, so regulating either drug would work just as effective IMO.
janderland··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
This is a place where “intention” matters to the courts. A lot of these laws require the platform to make a “best effort” at preventing illegal uploads. YT is making an effort and claiming it’s their best.
janderland··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
I work in this space and there is still a ton of illegal content on YT. As stated earlier, the main difference is that YT complies when infringements are eventually found.
janderland··on Beating the CAP theorem checklist (2013)
Availability is the one that’s overrated in my experience. A lot of system can handle some down time.
janderland··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
I’ve been using it as a daily driver for the past year due to web app bugs which only appear in Chrome. It’s been working fine for me.
janderland··on Coffee helped the Union in the Civil War
This narrative is seen way too often. “Here is how a drug affected me so get ready for it to affect you the same way.” Gets really tiring if you browse drug forums.
janderland··on Ask HN: What are some iconic comments on HN?
Sources?
janderland··on Go: Sentinel errors and errors.Is() slow your code down by 3000%
I thought this as well, but I also think it depends on how you’ve structured your code. If errors aren’t used by the algorithm (they’re just used for early exit) then yes it won’t make a big difference, but if your algorithm is handling errors nearly as frequently as the happy path then you’ll see a difference using the boolean.
janderland··on Bloomberg: "Strong possibility" of M4 debuting on May 7 with new iPad Pro
I run dual 2k monitors at 144hz from my M2 MacBook. Works even with the laptop monitor on.
janderland··on Bun’s New Crash Reporter
Bun is open source, right? If you want the debug symbols then build them. This feature is for the users who don’t want to debug Bun and simply submit a comprehensive report, which will be the majority of users.
janderland··on Tips on adding JSON output to your command line utility. (2021)
I’d rather use JMES Path (or jq even tho it’s messier) to restructure my data rather than some mixture of awk, sed, cut, etc.

Line output often needs restructuring in my experience, though JSON will always need it.

janderland··on Acetate Revisited: A Key Biomolecule at the Nexus of Metabolism, Epigenetics
I believe acetylaldehyde is the most toxic compound in that metabolic pathway.
janderland··on Show HN: Goqite, a persistent message queue Go library built on SQLite
From the example, it appears you still need to setup schema yourself using SQL. This makes the library a leaky abstraction because it only partially hides the SQL.
janderland··on Dada, an experimental new programming language
I assumed dada is using promises under the hood, just as JS is. If this is the case it could provide a static method for waiting on multiple promises, just as JS does.
janderland··on What I like about Go
Check it once and type cast it before passing it down the call stack. If you need a polymorphic type all the way down then model it using structs and interfaces so that the required operations are always available as methods. It’s the same as other languages which lack optionals/narrowing: C/C++, Java, etc.
janderland··on Dell promises 'every PC is going to be an AI PC' whether you like it or not
I wonder if people felt this way about integrated GPUs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see integrated AI hardware become standard in the same way.
janderland··on AsmBB – a lightweight web forum engine written in assembly language
Why would anyone care to know that an anonymous person is reading the same page as you?
