janci··on Texture-Less Text Rendering
Honest question as I don't know almost anything about modern computer graphics: Is it so much performance penalty to upload a small texture to GPU so you can't render the whole string to the texture in 2D and just display the texture onto two triangles?
janci··on Inkscape 1.4 Released
Some operations are best with keyboard (i.e. moving, zooming, panning, duplicating, acessing panels) and you need modifier keys quite often. You can map one or two to the stylus buttons, but that may not be sufficient
janci··on Inkscape 1.4
It's laggy on windows. On linux it works great.
janci··on Sshfs for Windows
While still useful to have a native tool, you can use WSL to mount a sshfs path in windows. I even use it for LUKS containers.
janci··on Ruby methods are colorless
> 3. You can only call a red function from within a red function

The base of most arguments against async. And it's false. You can call red from blue. And you should, sometimes.

janci··on Data Fetching for Single-Page Apps
JIRA is the worst combination of slow, blocking load before the view switches and sequential n+1 loads of more data that goes on and on
janci··on Data Fetching for Single-Page Apps
> if you want to have consistent behavior with classic HTML/HTTP apps

Why is that desirable? I see it more like a limitation of server-rendered web apps. Many times you can show useful UI before actual data is fully loaded (i.e. search / filter controls or basic data you already have).

Certainly, cascading fetching is undesirable and you should know what data you need to fetch and start the requests as soon as possible, but not necessarily before the route transition occurs.

janci··on VPN ban is strangling communication in Myanmar
If it's true, it's not GDPR. GDPR explicitly does not apply to personal use. There can be other laws that apply here. I am not a lawyer.
janci··on Round Rects Are Everywhere
Traditionally it was done here in eastern block with a beer bottle. A tool always within reach of a builder.
janci··on Up to 78M batteries will be discarded daily by 2025, researchers warn
Very bad example. Wall clock battery can last a decade. Any isolated power supply will waste much more energy. Also the clock will stop when the power is out.
janci··on Loop: Open-source macOS window manager
Wait, what? Are all windows of an application positioned in the same layer on macOS?
janci··on What happens to our breath when we type, tap, scroll
Oh, I never considered e-mail as generally stressful. Certainly there are e-mails that can raise my blood pressure, but that usually happens after reading them. I see e-mail mostly as a letter, that I open when I see fit and answer when I can. The red dot indicating a direct message on Teams or Slack is much more stressful.
janci··on What happens to our breath when we type, tap, scroll
Is it specific to screens tho? How does it compare to reading a book, writing a letter by hand, sewing, cutting vegetables for lunch, curiously disassenbling an alarm clock or any other activity that requires focus and concentration?
janci··on Eradicating N+1s: The Two-Phase Data Load and Render Pattern in Go
To work around N+1 is to write all your database layer functions in form of getFoosByIds(id[]) instead of getFooById(id). This allows you to easily compose the loads when you have subresources. It's similar to what the author is doing, but does not tear apart the subresources from the parent object.

Pushing the subresource fetching down to the database requires using JOINs and fails badly when you have multiple one-to-many relations in one fetch.

Just do a single, separate query per table.

janci··on The efficacy of duct tape vs. cryotherapy in the treatment of the common wart (2002)
I had warts for years as a kid, I had one large on my left palm, that somehow transferred to the same place on right palm and a few little on fingers. Cryotherapy did not help as they grew back soon. Supposedly anti-wart band-aids did not work. What finally worked was onion. Cut onion, rub it on the wart few times a day. They were gone in a few weeks and never came back. It worked like magic and I could literally see them getting smaller every day.
janci··on Growing sodium chloride crystals at home
I accidentally grew some big crystals from copper plating electrolyte (copper sulfate). Nice blue color.
janci··on Bringing Exchange Support to Thunderbird
Where the email is stored. I'd say there is little impact as when a malicious email ends on disk, it was processed and the potential damage has been done already. I trust the server-side filtering and thunderbird security more than file-access protection in defender
janci··on Bringing Exchange Support to Thunderbird
This. Took me some time until I figured this out. I would definitely not discover this if I was a new user, but I migrated my profile from linux where everything was fast (with the same mailbox) so I was suspicious.
janci··on Bringing Exchange Support to Thunderbird
Not seamlessly. It seems to work but is half-broken. Id does not properly pair invitations, updates and RSVPs from emails with auto-created items (by the Exchange server) and you end up with duplicates and mess. At leas that was my experience when I used this setup. Then moved to evolution for email and web outlook exclusively for calendar. Now I am on windows partly for lack of proper Outlook and Teams on linux (sad).
janci··on U-M finds students with alphabetically lower-ranked names receive lower grades
Sometimes you see the result is wrong so you do not give any points initially and then look on the steps and try to find something that looks correct to give at least some points. The willingness to track through every step diminishes with increasing fatigue.
janci··on Error Handling in Baby Toys
A piece of clear sticky tape over the speaker grille usually works wonders.
janci··on It's time to stop using SMS (2021)
Yes, SIMs can be swapped and SMS can be eavesdropped. But SMS 2FA has some qualities hard to replicate by other solutions:

Reliability. It's extremely hard to accidentally break a SIM card. If you drop or drown your phone it may easily become inoperable, but the SIM will be still OK and ready to work in other device.

Availability. If you somehow destroy your SIM it is reasonably easy to get a replacement. Properely and securely backing up an app-based authenticator is difficult. Enrolling multiple authenticators is cumbersome and sometimes not possible at all. Migrating to new device is as easy as it gets.

Attack discovery. If you are being sim-swapped, you will notice immediately as your phone stops working. If someone is eavesdroppoing your SMS OTP you will notice as you will receive unsolicited authentication attempts.

Attack scope. The attack must be targeted as it is much more costly to do it in larger scale.

Attack mitigation. You can take back your stolen SIM as opposed to leaked keys.

I'm not saying SMS is best solution, but it is good enough in many aspects. Other solutions are best in one aspect and much worse in others. SMS strikes the right balance IMO and can be rasonably secure when used as second factor. (Not first and only!)

janci··on What is a hard error, and what makes it harder than an easy error?
Interesting they were actual graphical dialogs with bouse support in 16-bit windows, but you'd get a text-mode blue screen on Win95. Happened a lot to me due to faulty CD-ROM drive. D: can not be read. Abort/retry/fail. What was even the difference between Abort and Fail?
janci··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
Tip: winget install Mozilla.Firefox
janci··on What PWA Can Do Today
Maybe I remember it wrong, but I think Mozilla said it is unacceptable in any form and they will not even consider it. I don't like the google way either, but Mozilla is stubborn here and Apple fights for control over app market.
janci··on What PWA Can Do Today
What are you even talking about? PWAs are an option on top of an ordinary web app. I guess all PWAs can be opened in the browser without "installing" them. Also "competing with all other apps" is the fault of OS built-in search. Nothing to do with PWA
janci··on What PWA Can Do Today
Very useful for flashing microcontrollers and devices without need of native apps. No installation, no drivers, works cross platform.
janci··on What PWA Can Do Today
No, they do not get access unless you allow it and explicitly selet a bluetooth device the page is allowed to connect to. The bluetooth dialog is handled entirely by the browser.
janci··on Don't Say Velcro (2017)
Same as LEGO brick controversy. Supposedly the bricks are not Legos, LEGOs and certainly not legos. At least per their legal dept.
janci··on XLights – open source light sequencer and show scheduler
So much this. It seems to detect any bright spots as LEDs. It should make a difference of the current frame with all-leds-off frame and then detect the LEDs.
