jan_Sate··on Phyllotaxis: An audio-reactive LED display
This kind of audio visualization reminds me of the old Windows Media Player. I enjoyed watching it back when I was a kid.

Too bad. Software audio visualization's no longer common. But hey your hardware visualization's better than software! :D

jan_Sate··on Run Qwen3.8 27B locally: real numbers from my Mac Studio
I've checked. I can still get a 3080 20G for $525, or 2080 ti 22G for $380. The price has increased but not too bad.

Probably the modding had prevented it from gaining too much price increase.

jan_Sate··on Run Qwen3.8 27B locally: real numbers from my Mac Studio
aww. I used to have a 3060 and I upgraded to this 3080 20G.

Maybe it's time for me to get a 3060 back again. :P

jan_Sate··on Identifying fake cosmetics using AI
It got me into thinking, since the genuine product also failed the AI test, what if someone made a fake product with a packaging that passed the AI test? It shouldn't be that difficult. All you need to do is to feed the photo of your fake product into the AI and keep iterating on the packaging.
jan_Sate··on Run Qwen3.8 27B locally: real numbers from my Mac Studio
Not suggesting a provider but if you're willing to get a Chinamod GPU, go get RTX 3080 20G or RTX 2080 Ti 22G. Get a couple of them and you can probably run Qwen3.8-27B at a reasonable speed.

I've got a RTX 3080 20G for $450 like a year ago. With llama.cpp, bf16 kv cache, kv cache offloaded to RAM, Qwen3.8 27B UD-Q4_K_XL, single RTX 3080 20G, I got 10 tok/s initially and it dropped to 5 tok/s at 50k context. I'm thinking of getting another Chinamod GPU.

Building a dual Chinamod GPU machine would only cost like $1000~$1500. It's not too bad compared with the alternatives!

jan_Sate··on If you're a button, you have one job
There's a problem with buffering tho. If the device's slow and unresponsive, and the user tapped the rotation button several times, it would be confusing if the rotation action happens 10 seconds after the user tapping the button. The user'd be left confused like "alright. So, has my input been taken?"

Now that I'm wondering. How does iphone mitigate this problem?

jan_Sate··on OpenTTD 16.0-Beta1
You're right. I misread. I guess I need coffee.

Yeah cargodist's indeed broken. You could milk plenty amount of money by just setting up two airports far away.

Maybe try Simutrans. It's got actual economy simulation. I tried it and I didn't like it tho. I couldn't make a profit in that game and kept losing. :(

jan_Sate··on OpenTTD 16.0-Beta1
It's actually not difficult to setup at all. The game just work out of the box without any mod. However there's a learning curve. Find a tutorial somewhere online and follow it thru then you're golden.

It took me maybe an hour to learn the first time I played it. It's worth it! :D

Tho after finishing the game a few times it gets old.

jan_Sate··on Pong in S Favicon
Tangentially relevant. Someone made a snake game on URL bar: https://demian.ferrei.ro/snake
jan_Sate··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
I got 35000, 18/13/9/9/6. Not my first language.

Interesting how literally everyone here's performing better than I do. Perhaps that's because I just clicked on the first option whenever I don't know about a word.

jan_Sate··on The placeholder name for the Windows 8 experience was "modern"
This. I don't see the point of constantly changing UI as an end-user. The old one just work. It works perfectly. Now that you changed it and thing breaks. :|
jan_Sate··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
Unpopular opinion but I actually enjoy using USB Micro B more than USB-C. That's because USB-C is much more complicated and there're non-standard-compliant cables floating in the market. USB-C also has some fancy mode like voltage selection. If it got screwed up somehow leading it to supply the wrong voltage, it could fry your Pico board.
jan_Sate··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
The form factor. It's tiny compared with mini PC. Unlike other SBC, the software support's good that it just work as advertised (GPIO, graphic hardware acceleration, etc.). If you're using it for work, it also has stable supply chain / commitment that you can ensure to be able to obtain a unit in at least the next few years.

But you're right. It's pretty overpriced for its performance. If I'm after the GPIO I'd just use a microcontroller. If I'm setting up a headless server I'd just use pretty much any other SBCs or mini PC. I'm personally not a big fan of Raspberry Pi.

The cheap Raspberry Pi's still available as Raspberry Pi Zero tho, if that's what you're after.

jan_Sate··on Mini Micro Fantasy Computer
Not sure on the performance but it might be possible to port this Mini Micro to those platforms.
jan_Sate··on Mini Micro Fantasy Computer
Couldn't someone just rebuild the source code for Raspberry Pi?
jan_Sate··on Flipper One Tech Specs
This. I might purchase other Rockchip SBCs as well.
jan_Sate··on Explore Wikipedia Like a Windows XP Desktop
That's pretty fun to play with. Whoever made it, good job! :D
jan_Sate··on The gay jailbreak technique (2025)
That's hilarious. I wonder if it'd be fixed today tho. Once a jailbreaking technique is identified, it can be implemented by adding guardrails (tho it'd possibly compromise the capability of the model)

I'm also surprised that it didn't get caught and removed by post-generation censorship. I thought that most cloud services would have that. Perhaps I was wrong.

jan_Sate··on SatoshiGuesser – Roll for Bitcoin
lol. It's fun. Not that I could ever guess it right realistically but it's fun.

This kind of fun thing's exactly why I'm on the internet. Thanks for sharing! :D

jan_Sate··on Tell HN: An update from the new Tindie team
It depends on your scale. I sell on my own site at a very small scale and I just made a webform that let the user select the quantity of product on their own and get the quotation and the order would be created automatically. After that the user would be provided a link to my Paypal and they'd have to manually enter the amount and the order ID on Paypal as a remark and make the payment. Then they'd have to click on the "I paid" button on their order on my website. Then I'd receive a notification on the payment, manually verify if it's paid and fulfill the order. The payment processing is done without the being technically integrated into my site.

Since my scale is small enough, even if the user forgot to enter the order ID, it'd still work because I could just map the order and payment manually by timing.

If you don't want to create your own order handling website, even a Google Form would work for that. Just get the user to pay you on their own and fill in a form. Then you'd do the payment mapping manually and send them the product.

jan_Sate··on He asked AI to count carbs 27000 times. It couldn't give the same answer twice
Oh. I read "crabs" and I was confused until I clicked into the article. Guess I need coffee.
jan_Sate··on SDL Now Supports DOS
Uhm... excuse me? Why? Is there anyone even using DOS for anything serious these days?
jan_Sate··on 7zip.com Is Serving Malware
The same could be said for software from the US. Could be a vector of CIA. For average US citizens, it might even be safer to use Russian software because FSB can't come after them.
jan_Sate··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
Anyone else doesn't like modern minimalist icon design? It looks boring.
jan_Sate··on Maggots, an efficient source of protein
ew! why? Why?
jan_Sate··on London–Calcutta bus service
So that's what the people were using before commercial flights were common.
jan_Sate··on Bose has released API docs and opened the API for its EoL SoundTouch speakers
The title of the article is misleading. The API documentation is indeed useful but I wouldn't call publishing the API documentation open source.
jan_Sate··on Bose has released API docs and opened the API for its EoL SoundTouch speakers
They're just publishing API documentation. No source code of the device got published.

At least people can create their own implementation of the API tho.

jan_Sate··on Cloth Simulation
Looks like that I can cut it without right click by swiping fast enough.
jan_Sate··on Oblast: A better Blasto game for the Commodore 64
The game's name reminds me of the Russian word for state/district/region. I was right. It's an intended pun. The game's title screen on the screenshot in the article has Russian on it.
