I don’t think theft is a legitimate term to use. We need a new one for “used without permission”

Any updates on that? I haven’t seen any news about it since it was announced

What about purism and system76? Some integration is great, especially when one part of that integration can’t usually be profitable in its own

How do you do estimates for contract jobs then? Clients are very uncomfortable when you say “between X and 3X weeks”

If you can’t do it ethically, why on earth are you trying to replace the incumbent at all? Some personal power trip?

I think that people should value speed for a different reason. The real value of rushing things, imho, is for learning: you learn how to build it and also how people react via this focus on concretes. That is what generates the speed, not the literally fast development cycles in and of themselves
jammygit··on A Study of Meditation Under the Influence of Psilocybin
Depends on your view of meditation. It would interfere with that form of zazen that claims that zazen is the goal. For insight meditation, it would speed things up, no?

Also, if ever someone had a bad trip, meditation would help to bring it back under control

jammygit··on What do we really know about the effectiveness of digital advertising?
It costs the ad creator money every click and rewards google for mixing ads into the search results in a confusing way. This is a sketchy practice when the ad is for the exact product or site you typed into the search bar - as another commentator mentioned, the dynamic forces you to buy the ad to keep competitors from stealing the spot. Toxic

They can turn off telemetry then. Actions > words
jammygit··on Intel publishes misleading benchmarks against AMD
They are publishing statements of fact about a competitor. The onus is on them to check those facts, and companies should be held accountable for the things they say - even in advertising
jammygit··on Doodling can help you pay attention
Almost 30% better retention, but on participants names? That’s a weird thing to remember. Is that just the thing they cherry picked that the participants happened to remember better?
jammygit··on Pine64 November Update – ANSI Pinebook Pro and PinePhone Preorder
Is the keyboard better than the XP’s 13? I hate typing in that thing. I miss my 2015 MacBook w Ubuntu, the hardware was so incredible

Not if you’re Apple and you hide it overseas. Seems a lot like this situation

They need to charge slightly more then. Having enough profits to ensure financial security for the organization is not unethical

I used ubports for a bit. Liked it a lot, very stable. If it had anki and authy I would have stuck with it, and they had plans at the time to support android apps via emulation
jammygit··on How to Set Your Google Data to Self-Destruct

jammygit··on Vulkan Progress Report #5
My father in laws windows laptop doesn’t crash, but slows down so much it’s unusable every windows update. He gave me his laptop to fix it recently and it took 6 hours to get the update through before it sped up again. We’re buying him a used MacBook now
jammygit··on Keystone pipeline shut after spilling 1.4M litres of oil in North Dakota
They won’t get their new pipelines at all if they keep getting spills in the news
jammygit··on AirPods Pro Page Performance
I was thinking yesterday about how poor the YouTube UX is actually. Just a bunch of personal annoyances, nothing major. The speed and scalability are quite good though
jammygit··on Doing a Job (1982)
> When important decisions are not documented, one becomes dependent on individual memory, which is quickly lost as people leave or move to other jobs. In my work, it is important to be able to go back a number of years to determine the facts that were considered in arriving at a decision. This makes it easier to resolve new problems by putting them into proper perspective. It also minimizes the risk of repeating past mistakes. Moreover if important communications and actions are not documented clearly, one can never be sure they were understood or even executed.

In my limited experience, I have not seen this done effectively in a software project. What does this actually look like when done properly? Ie, how do you store the data and keep it from becoming busy work?

jammygit··on Doing a Job (1982)
> All work should be checked through an independent and impartial review. In engineering and manufacturing, industry spends large sums on quality control.

I feel that the code reviews I’ve been a part of were not as effective as they could have been. I think there is social awkwardness at criticizing design or conceptual aspects, and a multitasking aspect that means the reviewer is in a hurry and mostly checks conformity to the style guide. Very little checking out of branches and manual testing happened, so we had more regressions than expected.

Is this the norm? What practices have you seen that lead to better results?

jammygit··on US debt surpasses $23T for first time
We should judge governments at least a little bit the way we judge people. If people have debt, why do they have it? Are they even trying to pay it off? Are they counting on dying before somebody tries to collect, leaving it to your kids to deal with?
jammygit··on Google Buys Fitbit for $2.1B
The PineTime is a new Linux smart watch - I imagine a future version could do the basics pretty good. I really just need notifications and a step counter, personally

jammygit··on Google Buys Fitbit for $2.1B
I advised my privacy-worried dad to get a Fitbit instead of an android watch (couldn’t afford Apple Watch). Now I feel like an *hole
