jammygit··on What IBM Pays H-1B Software Engineers and Developers
I know a very bright Indian guy who was frustrated with the American system, so he immigrated to Canada instead. Come on up, we’ll take you!
jammygit··on Twitter says it will restrict retweeting world leaders who break rules
We have a situation where a platform is able to coerce world leaders into behaving. That is a scary amount of centralization
jammygit··on By Quitting Social Media You Could Read 200 Books a Year
I quit Facebook and ended up spending too much time on hn
jammygit··on Blizzard cancels Overwatch's Switch launch event
They are genuinely afraid of more media screwups and bad press?
jammygit··on Clash over Surveillance Software Turns Personal in Germany
Google tried to do worse with dragonfly and employees stood up. That made me feel nice
jammygit··on Understanding the OWASP list
Anybody have any other sites or books/resources that they would recommend?
jammygit··on Understanding the OWASP list
Did not know this existed. Very cool
jammygit··on LinkedIn loses appeal over access to user profiles
My understanding is that Facebook uses similar clauses to disallow web scraping. Does that mean Facebook is fair game too?
jammygit··on Western firms kowtow to China's increasing economic clout
I found this [1] list also, although this reddit post seems to have more information. I especially like how this reddit post includes updates and companies who made good choices like red bull

jammygit··on [dead]
Maybe the actual story is that mei merch sold out in response?
jammygit··on Linear Algebra and Applications: An Inquiry-Based Approach
I feel like my university only taught calculation, not theory, when it came to linear algebra. It’s like the equivalent of a “12 hacks to rotate a matrix” article. The theoretical books I find however give no explanation for the definitions etc, ie, WHY are the dot/cross products defined the way they are. It’s as though they feel matrixes are natural phenomenon that you should just memorize the properties of, which is also nonsense.

The entire field is defined by such terrible books. I’d love to be wrong though if somebody has a recommendation

jammygit··on Regarding Last Weekend’s Hearthstone Grandmasters Tournament
There are still multiple posts about it on the Reddit front page too, at least earlier
jammygit··on Regarding Last Weekend’s Hearthstone Grandmasters Tournament
I plan to avoid their games with the exception of playing with a particular sick friend. I don’t intend to buy another for a very, very long time.

Can’t speak for other people though

jammygit··on Twitter analysis: identifying a propaganda bot network
On the other hand, my twitter account was banned almost immediately after creating it this year. They said it was for “breach of terms of service” - and they won’t even let me delete the empty account now and declared they won’t respond to my support requests.

I think it was my VPN. I just wanted to thank somebody for a helpful tweet

jammygit··on Blizzard's Weibo Account Just Posted an Apology To China
They had to apologize to SOMEBODY, and they chose Chinese censors. The bad publicity is incredible so far, there are 5 top stories on reddit at the moment
jammygit··on Fallout from Blizzard Hong Kong Incident
What do you mean? Lots of social media activity?
jammygit··on Overwatch's Mei Is Becoming a Symbol of the Hong Kong Resistance
It’s to sell their east-Asian inspired loot box games to Chinese users. Blizzard has been learning from Chinese and Korean gaming companies and how they skirt gambling laws and want into that market
jammygit··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
An aside: Blizzard has been fighting harder and harder to control the esports that revolve around its games. Now that it is succeeding in centralizing things as it hoped, it is using its power to destroy careers and impose political censorship literally for the Chinese government.
jammygit··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
You are claiming that morality is irrelevant if there is a rule involved, and your action is substantially worse if you break a rule for a moral reason deliberately instead of accidentally?
jammygit··on Undeclared Martial Law on the Streets of Hong Kong
“The police are attacking me now”

This journalist was not being accurate. There is a large difference between an attack and pressure. He claimed they wanted to clear the streets of cameras so that the police could do whatever they want. If everyone talked like that, nobody would trust the news. He exaggerated and speculated like crazy.

I’m assuming anyway he’s a journalist. Maybe he’s just a youtuber. Either way, don’t say “the police are completely out of control” when all they are doing is yelling aggressively and pushing a few people.

jammygit··on World's Best-Run Pension Funds Say It's Time to Start Worrying
You never hear discussions about maintenance costs of infrastructure. I wonder what the math looks like for a given bridge/road
jammygit··on World's Best-Run Pension Funds Say It's Time to Start Worrying
Canada is known for a large amount of high skill immigration that benefits almost everybody. It’s nice having educated people around and we have access to the best food in the world because everyone brings it with them
jammygit··on Ask HN: What are the top textbooks for data structures?
I haven’t read it. A list of his books:

jammygit··on Telecom Lobbyists Successfully Remove Canada from Wireless Pricing Report
I used to use freedom. My wife used to say it was short for “freedom from service.” There were a lot of dead zones in the town I lived and it was useless on road trips.

Good prices and terms at least

jammygit··on Ask HN: What are the top textbooks for data structures?
Drozdek is a great intro text, imho. Very clear and concise, I wish he wrote more computer science texts besides on this and one on compression
jammygit··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
Good Linux support and no issues
jammygit··on Telecom Lobbyists Successfully Remove Canada from Wireless Pricing Report
My bell plan is 95 CAD and gives 4GB/mo so I’m not sure where your numbers came from. I must have missed that deal
jammygit··on Tesla Acquires Canadian Battery Specialist, Hibar Systems
Ah, the dream of all Canadian companies: get acquired by a bigger American one. I wish there were at least a few more Canadian mega corps to sell to.

If it had to be anyone though, glad it’s one of Musks moonshot companies. Uh, not his literal moonshot, figure of speech!

jammygit··on Government Plans to Begin DNA Testing on Detained Immigrants
Why is this downvoted?
jammygit··on Armed Militias Are Taking Trump’s Civil War Tweets Seriously
I think that people’s grievances just need to be addressed, and it’s almost entirely about increasing poverty (with the rest being a matter of blaming somebody for it).

Helping people to thrive better with today’s economy would go a long way
