jamisteven··on US begins withdrawal from Paris climate accord
I doubt any at all really, people dont judge teams based on their coaches, or companies based on their CEO's, just as I dont judge my friends in the UK based on their governments decision capabilities around Brexit.
jamisteven··on Apple commits $2.5B to combat housing crisis in California
Mind as well be thrown in the trash can.
jamisteven··on My own private Iceland
Are you looking to move to Reykjavik because of the dev jobs or are you saying you like the landscape that much that you are willing to learn the language to experience it full time?
jamisteven··on NASA engineer's 'helical engine' may violate the laws of physics
Exactly what I was thinking, kinda baffled that this guy is an engineer at NASA.
jamisteven··on Whistleblower: Google Boss' Daughter Scrubbed from Guardian Exposé
L M A O - Yea, all of the SV show is loosely based on actual events.
jamisteven··on Supreme Court allows blind people to sue retailers if websites aren't accessible
This is the most PC shit ive read about this year.
jamisteven··on Robots to Cut 200k U.S. Bank Jobs in Next Decade, Study Says
Yea, I am working in this sector at the moment (banking and automation) and I can tell you compared to say, a tech company, they are very very far behind. Although some banks like Goldman and JPMogran, are lightyears ahead of the competition in this space. This is the consequence of having non-technologist in tech management roles for the past 50 years, and typically no technologists on the exec. boards either.
jamisteven··on Why It’s Hard for Startups to Create Wealth in Europe
I would also add that things are just well, easier in the States, at least compared to Germany / Switzerland. The amount of paperwork alone makes it a non-starter for most.
jamisteven··on Ask HN: Will getting a PhD lead to a more interesting life?
Its a mind blowing thing to me that people study for that long, not really even starting their career until their 30's, to get a Ph.D - That said, if you are that close, and having this serious of thoughts about what is the right decision, and it will only take this extra 8 months to set you on the right path, then just do it. btw what country are you in?
jamisteven··on Online courses vs. colleges for software engineering
Not all people are like your friend, not all colleges are like your girlfriends, and most importantly not all career trajectories benefit highly from a college degree. My wife for example, her degree gets her a poverty level salary in the states, whereas in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, she makes near 6 figures. Going to school for CS, and having to take all the other dumb shit that will never, ever help you in any real world CS job, is why the alternatives are coming to a rise.
jamisteven··on Too Much Dark Money in Almonds
This has seriously got to be the dumbest, most uneducated piece of writing I have ever read. Yes, lets all just throw money at a broken problem, that'll make it better. "Politics" as the author refers to it as, needs the opposite of funding, it needs to be cut off entirely from donors to see who still stands. The US Government, will have a fund where it gives a set number to each candidate for campaigning purposes and that is ALL that can be used. Already own a private jet? Tough shit, cant use it for campaigning! Already a millionaire with lots of millionaire friends? Sorry charlie! That is the only way we will get back to grass roots form of electing. Simply throwing money at something rarely fixes a problem.
jamisteven··on Where you are born is more predictive of your future than any other factor
I find it hilariously patronizing how they explain things in this article, did they seriously need to mine all this data and do all this research to come to these so obvious conclusions? Poverty, Lack of healthcare and education, clean water, the sins of generations and the cycle that proceeds it, its the basis of every ghetto in the world. Really dont understand what The Gates Foundation is trying to get across with this piece. He has the power, the means, the influence to single handedly change the situation in Chad with zero help from anybody, all they have to do is choose to do it. Yet here we are with all this data and metrics, was this seriously an "ah-ha!" moment for them?! If so, they seriously are detached as the 1%.
jamisteven··on Why the Amazon Basics Keyboard Is My Favorite Keyboard

How exactly, is this "culture war"?

jamisteven··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
I was living in TN when I got Lymes.
jamisteven··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
I am better now but still have some aches here and there but its nothing like what it was before, like the person above mentioned I would recommend a fast first and foremost just make sure its a controlled fast and she has a doctor monitoring her overall health while she does it, esp. if longer than 3 days. Me personally I didnt know about the fasting at the time but the doc had me on a combination of the following: 1.Cats Claw 2.Oregano Oil 3.Thorne ATP Formula 4.Corvalen D-Ribose 5.Thorne Adrenal Cortex

This was in combination with a strict diet, I cant seem to remember all the details anymore but it was something along the lines of 0 sugars, 0 carbs, high fats, lots of greens, protein via white meat only. I would also take a look at Stephen Buhner's protocol, the article below is a good read as well. https://medium.com/p/6e3664fce54f/responses/show

jamisteven··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
Yea, knowing what I know now about fasting, that would have been the first thing I tried, not surprised at all that it worked! Glad he is better.
jamisteven··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
Being someone who has this disease, I can say its much worse than even this article depicts. I was self-diagnosed after seeing over 10 doctors. First was told ahh its Lupus! Then it was certainly some kind of STD, then Rheumatoid Arthritis, then Gout, then reactive arthritis, it wasnt until I looked at my spreadsheet I had kept to look for commonalities that I noticed every one of them said they were "75% sure it wasnt Lymes". I immediately went to anylabtestnow and had a few tests done for common forms of borellia infection and took the results to my rheumatologist. You would think thats the end of it but no, after months of antibiotics I was still not well and still couldnt walk correctly, I ended up at a naturopath in Seattle. All said and done I lost 30lbs, couldnt get out of bed, pain everywhere, symptoms of amnesia, forgetting everything, scoriosis on my eyelids, and all kinds of other really terrible side affects that I wont get into here.
jamisteven··on We Have Ruined Childhood
This, having recently moved from the states to Switzerland I can say with confidence that this phenomenon is primarily a US one.

Bit dramatic.
jamisteven··on One City Saved $5M by Routing School Buses with an Algorithm
Didnt FedEx or UPS do this same thing years back by eliminating left hand turns?
jamisteven··on Apple Confirms $1M Reward for Anyone Who Can Hack an iPhone
"The full $1 million will go to researchers who can find a hack of the kernel—the core of iOS—with zero clicks required by the iPhone owner. Another $500,000 will be given to those who can find a “network attack requiring no user interaction." Ehhh, whats the point in this exactly? Apple only considers bugs to be significant if the penetration can happen without help from the end user? Thats not how this works in the real world Apple.

Pretty sure every gig ive ever had would not pass your nifty requirements above.
jamisteven··on Stop Blaming America’s Poor for Their Poverty
You left out many important details in this story: 1. Did you have health insurance? If not, why? 2. What was your job previously? 3. Who signed the paper relinquishing the hospital of all responsibility of botching the surgery?
jamisteven··on Stop Blaming America’s Poor for Their Poverty
Is he seriously comparing to Japan to the US? I would say it is far, far easier to get out of poverty in the states (I have and know many who have) than it is in Japan. The two cultures have vast differences in everything from family dynamics to education to politics.
jamisteven··on A "cure" for baldness could be around the corner
We have literally heard this about every ailment under the sun for the past 20 years. Aids, Cancer, Diabetes. What they really mean is "there may be a way for you to go broke curing insert disease
jamisteven··on Will Bitcoin Make a Good Investment?
Short answer: hell no. What gives currency value is how often people use said currency to purchase goods, nobody uses Bitcoin, not to the extent of any real currencies anyways.
