jamessun··on Six Principles for Making New Things (2008)
My favorite line in PGs essay:

"I like to find (a) simple solutions (b) to overlooked problems (c) that actually need to be solved, and (d) deliver them as informally as possible, (e) starting with a very crude version 1, then (f) iterating rapidly."

jamessun··on Washington, DC Teaming with Audi on Vehicle-To-Infrastructure Technology
"Starting this week, drivers of select new Audis who approach more than 600 intersections in the District, can know when the light will turn green, by glancing at their dashboards."
jamessun··on Research project to record the “real world reactions” to a driver-less vehicle
From https://www.arlnow.com/2017/08/08/morning-notes-1720/

"VT Says It Is Behind ‘Driverless’ Van — The “driverless” van seen driving around Clarendon over the past week was actually a Virginia Tech research project designed to record the “real world reactions” to a vehicle without a driver. However, there was a driver: a man dressed as a car seat. The mystery was solved in real time on Twitter yesterday and quickly went viral."

jamessun··on Vote for your favorite math video created by middle school students
I attended one of the regional competitions held in Northern Virginia over the weekend and it was great to see so many 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students participate in MathCounts.
jamessun··on Hackathon for 6th-8th grade students
It's terrific to see high school students serving as mentors to the participants.
jamessun··on Show HN: 1dollarthings.com – an internet dollar store
I consumed product data feeds from companies that ran affiliate programs through companies like Commission Junction, filtered/stored the product data offline, indexed it, and displayed it in any number of ways through the web.

In retrospect, I should have spent more time marketing the site and getting feedback from users instead of focusing on the technical infrastructure :-)

jamessun··on Show HN: 1dollarthings.com – an internet dollar store
I worked on a similar side project a little while ago that focused on items that were below ten dollars. Like 1 Dollar Things, I used your typical affiliate data feeds. It was an interesting development exercise, but I failed to get any steady traffic/interest in the site.

I think the idea has some merit, but my execution wasn't good enough. Good luck with 1 Dollar Things!

jamessun··on [dead]
"Mr. Bezos’s role in transforming the brand into a fast-moving digital news operation manifests itself in the gleaming new headquarters the Post moved into last week. At the heart of the newsroom hangs a towering data analytics board detailing the patterns of Web traffic—a sight common at new digital media companies, but less so at most legacy outlets. Analytics dashboards will soon be added to reporters’ computers, and traffic figures will eventually be looked at as part of performance reviews, Mr. Baron said."

jamessun··on Putting the digital keys to unlock data out of reach of authorities
Gist of the editorial: "All freedoms come with limits; it seems only proper that the vast freedoms of the Internet be subject to the same rule of law and protections that we accept for the rest of society."
jamessun··on Bullet Points of Doom for ESPN
> They're high because ESPN has fixed price contracts into the future for the rights to broadcast sports events. If their subscriber base falls, they're still on the hook for those contracts.

If ESPN continues to lose viewers, their ad revenue will suffer. If ESPN revenue suffers, will they be able to pay the fixed price contracts they have with the largest, most viewed sports leagues, such as the NFL, MLB, and SEC (college football)?

Seems to me that this is the first domino to fall...

jamessun··on Vice President Biden’s very personal speech to Yale graduates
"...it’s always appropriate to question another man’s judgment, but never appropriate to question his motives because you simply don’t know his motives."
