Not a new idea: http://www.myshape.com/ Website is having serious issues right now but they've raised a boatload of cash over the past 4 years.

The citizens equivalent would be to offer a $500,000 dollar prize for the best idea to figure out how to turn myself into a quadrillionaire.
jamesshamenski··on How to become a great finisher
The focus needs to remove the concept of time and just frame the mind to think about tasks. This is a foundation of the Pomodoro Technique.
jamesshamenski··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (June 2011)

Million Dollar Question:

How could you additionally parse the information to extract structured data? For example; names of candidates, addresses, previous employers, job titles held.

jamesshamenski··on Wonga won The Startup100 awards, not Spotify
Can someone explain how Wonga took the concept of pay day loans (which has a negative connotation in America) and spun so much posititivity out of their brand? I like how they make it easy to pay bills directly but there is something i'm missing here.
jamesshamenski··on How we built News.me, a social news reader for iPad
I'd pay to have an easy to ingest river of what my friends have in their stream. When i use flipboard, I see a few too many articles that I've already looked at on my other devices.

BTW - I'd like to see the idea of reading my friends river of stories implemented with instapaper.

The title is like saying, 'running shoes for grandma'.
jamesshamenski··on Inside Seized Drug-Smuggling Submarines
Ahead of the curve back in 2009, Vice Magazine did a humorous and brilliant mini-documentary on this very story. It's a very revealing look into exactly what was going on.

jamesshamenski··on Equation: How Much Money Do Spammers Rake In?
Wow, that's really great. Thanks for the insight!

Was this project done as a thesis paper or was there an alternative purpose for undertaking such a long project? I'm pretty impressed with the execution of your team.

jamesshamenski··on Equation: How Much Money Do Spammers Rake In?
Was this a technically difficult operation to undertake? How long did it take to plan and execute? i'm assuming that it's not that tedious of a task to scale and automate.

In going through this exercise were you able to come up with ideas to combat spam more effectively?

jamesshamenski··on Redditors earning $100k+ a year, what are your secrets to your success?
Totally disagree. I've lived in Van for 15 years and it's hilariously more affordable than LA or NY (where I am now). The Mercer 2010 survey put Van at #75 in the world which was surprisingly one spot ahead of Toronto.

Sidenote: the job market of Vancouver is much slower and lower paying than what's happening state side.

jamesshamenski··on The Secret of User Activity Streams and Cohort Metrics
Calling a real time user activity stream a 'cohort' is technically accurate but I think it sounds inappropriate in this context.
jamesshamenski··on Introducing the Google Translate app for iPhone
Any idea if 'speak to translate' will be coming to the API? http://code.google.com/apis/language/translate/overview.html
jamesshamenski··on Death to Captchas
http://www.nucaptcha.com/ Offers a solution in video captchas. Moving letters are way easier to read and if fraudulent activity is detected the videos slow down to a rate which becomes uneconomical to solve.
jamesshamenski··on Yahoo is Shutting Down Del.icio.us

jamesshamenski··on Calacanis to Challenge TechCrunch
O - okay that's pretty rad.
jamesshamenski··on Ask HN: How to collect TV + online TV viewing behavior?
It's great to hear what's happening in the middle east!

I'm very open to sharing the results with my partners. However, slicing the data partitioned by their competitor will surely not work across the board.

jamesshamenski··on Ask HN: How to collect TV + online TV viewing behavior?
Having a plug-in is a descent idea. That's essentially the same concept as what Nielsen does with their black boxes. Thanks for the input!
jamesshamenski··on Calacanis to Challenge TechCrunch
Thanks for the response. I see that you wrote this at around 4:25pm. If you are focused, why are you chatting on HN? Especially when you've publicly commented that you dislike the HN community.
jamesshamenski··on Calacanis to Challenge TechCrunch
Jason is hitting a low point. If he wants a cut of the Aol deal, would he then give Arrington a portion of the launch conf (because just like disrupt, it's a derivative of tc50)? He's a hypocrite and drunk for any attention he can get.

Plus, isn't sequoia peeved about him starting to invest + run a separate video network + new conference + playing poker? I hear a new product is in the pipe but their innovation has slowed since he got distracted.

jamesshamenski··on Ask HN: Can you recommend a virtual personal assistant agency?
mech turk is best at yes/no questions.
jamesshamenski··on Instant temporary group texting
I second that, how do they monetize? I see lots of ads as the only solution. And ads in texts are super annoying.
jamesshamenski··on Freakonomics: How to Avoid a Bad Apartment in New York City
Im moving to nyc in 2-3 weeks as well. Maybe we can join forces and push down the broker fees. 4 can be stronger than 1.
jamesshamenski··on Facebook is not worth $33 billion
the flaw here is that it assumes money is real. With no gold standard, money is entirely based upon perception. More fortunes have been made through adjusting this lens than actual hard work.
jamesshamenski··on Vancouver Startup Hackathon Oct 8-10: cperciva & A Thinking Ape (YC W08)
on a side note, is there anything good coming out of vancouver right now? I haven't heard of anything since the bootup labs debacle.
jamesshamenski··on Stylebot for Chrome: Web Developer Toolbar meets Greasemonkey
I also like that people could totally re-skin Hacker News to look like a site related to actual work. I bet there is a monetization model in selling bland versions of sites (ie: espn.com to look like an excel sheet).

Is there a way to share your design for others to see?

Can the combined css be exported as one style sheet?

jamesshamenski··on Stylebot for Chrome: Web Developer Toolbar meets Greasemonkey
as a product manager, this is great for me. I can alter my ideas and see how they feel with the real product. It's a great step on top of Axure. You should sell to them for $500k today.

nice job with the demo video.

jamesshamenski··on Dave McClure responds to Arrington's post
I can't think of a time when Arrington was seriously wrong. His leads get in way before the news breaks and his stories have even altered what was to be announced.

I doubt Mike just made this all up. Especially how everyone in that room has feed him stories for the past 5 years. Do you think Mike (a lawyer) would seek legal advice unless this was real.

Funny enough, both sides of this story are trying to win over startups! Either way, we win.

jamesshamenski··on TubeMote API: Make a remote control app for your website in less than 5 minutes.
It would be nice to hear of some hypothetical usage opportunities. My website usually comes with a keyboard and mouse and a using a phone seems more cool than realistic.

With one good example, I could get excited about the possibilities.
