jamespcole2··on Kogan imposes a tax on IE7 shoppers
It's not browser elitism, it's just the facts. No reasonable person is arguing that IE7 is the best browser - it's old, out of date and works poorly and there are plenty of good free browsers to choose from so why not just use one of them.

Also, where does it end? Should we still support Netscape or IE6 just because users have the right to choose to use old browsers? There has to be a limit to the support for older technology and IE7 has reached that limit.

It cuts both ways, sure you can choose to use IE7 but also I can choose not to support it, if that loses customers then so be it, if it gets them to upgrade it has done both them and the internet a service.

Nice move, there is no reasonable excuse to still be using IE7. If your IT department is forcing it on you they are just being slack + it's a consumer website so you probably shouldn't be shopping at work anyway.

For some reason whenever I read Maddox's posts I picture him as Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan
jamespcole2··on Renouncing citizenship: Did Eduardo Saverin do anything wrong?
lol, overreact much? People change citizenship all the time for various reasons, finance, marriage, lifestyle, work etc. it would be crazy to block people from returning. Personally I'd take Singapore over the US any day of the week if I was choosing somewhere to live and had that kind of money(Singapore is an expensive place to live).

I've been using http://api-status.com/ for ages, seems pretty similar
jamespcole2··on Supporting IE Is Too Much Work
I generally don't bother supporting anything lower than IE8. If you want to use my app and are using an old version of IE just download chrome, it's free, otherwise don't use the app. I have used only Linux for about the last five years but i do test in IE using VirtualBox and the free VHD's provided by Microsoft(thanks guys).

I don't mind using the VM approach but the thing that annoys me is the massive size of the VHD files. My Ubuntu install is only about 3GB but each windows VM is around 16GB - 16GB!!! Considering I need a separate VM for every version of IE I want to test and I am using 128GB SSD's in my laptop and Desktop most of my disk space is taken up with having VM's to test IE.

That being said I think it's worth supporting newer versions of IE but I always display a message to users recommending they get a better browser, I think the more people we can get away from using IE the better because while IE10 might be ok now i just don't trust MS ability to update it in the future and i worry that in 10 years we'll all be bitching about IE10 the way we bitch about IE6 now because millions of users will still be running out of date browsers because of the poor update path for IE.

jamespcole2··on Build android apps from your Android device
Sweet! Definitely installing this on my Transformer tonight, hopefully with the hard keyboard it could actually be pretty productive.
jamespcole2··on Android Tethering on Linux
BTW the HTC Hero supported tethering since Android 1.5, hence why i was confused. I didn't realise it was vendor specific before 2.2 because it seems all factory unlocked HTC's(and some carrier locked ones) have supported tethering since 1.5 without rooting.

Lol, had to look it up for my own piece of mind, i was sure i could remember tethering on my old Hero back in the day.

jamespcole2··on Android Tethering on Linux
My bad, sorry, looks like i need to work on my reading skills. Comment withdrawn.
jamespcole2··on Android Tethering on Linux
Fair enough, did you add the bit to the start of the article about 2.2 or do I just suck at reading and comprehension(in which case apologies)
jamespcole2··on Android Tethering on Linux
You don't need to do any of this or need root access, i've had 3 android phones (hero, desire, galaxy SII) and I've never had to do any of this. Just plug it in and select USB tethering and it is recognised by ubuntu as an ethernet adapter.
jamespcole2··on Atheism in America
A very interesting article, it makes me sad for america. I find the religious are much more often "that guy" than atheists are, i'm thinking proponents of Sharia Law, the pope, the guy at the train station yelling about the end of the world, the people who commit honour killings, homophobes, the list goes on. In the end what you believe as a religious person has no rational basis so you cannot reasonably expect people share your beliefs. Given that religous people believe something that is essentially insane(having no reasonable, rational or scientific basis) it is fair that you should be called out and challenged on those opinions. Having your beleiefs questioned is part of living in a free and open society and if your beliefs cannot stand up to even the most cursory of challenges then it is perhaps time to re-evaluate those beliefs.

You have the right to believe in crazy ghosts and gods and whatnot but don't expect me to respect you for it or make any concession or accomodation to those beliefs. Fortunately for me i live in a country where atheists make up around 25% of the population and it is on the rise, in a few generations we will be rid of the absurd and horrible scourge on society that is religion.
