Also Hal Finney and others who helped in the beginning may have left sums of BTC behind (RIP). A personal anecdote, somewhat related: In the early days, I mined several blocks from the wallet itself, on an AMD Sempron or Duron, at about 800-900mhz. Even then, this took a few days and then weeks before eventually becoming impossible with the advent of mining pools and GPU mining arrays.

Speaking for myself only, some of us just lost or discarded them because they had no value, and mining them was more of an act of altruism, so while it was fun seeing the numbers go up, it was easy to lose track of a wallet. I don't think electrum seed phrases were around yet at that time, either, or I had no knowledge of them if they were.

Unless we're talking about the Tesla cards, nVidia is about the worst of the GPU class as far as mining goes. Nobody uses it aside from people who are exceedingly frugal to their own detriment. There is a reason why their prices aren't scaling linearly with the mining boom like AMD, because they are not as good as AMD in most cases.

I agree; every day we stray further from the fundamentals. Xen, and to a lesser extent Docker, and other tools, do help beautify some of the underlying technologies and processes that may have come before them, but that does not make the usability sacrifice justified in situations like these.

I'm afraid I don't have a holistic answer, in this instance, that satisfies the requirement that the developers eat and be clothed, and that the users have an unimpeded work flow. Maybe it's a moral solution needed between all users, of all payment tiers, to agree not to abuse the intent of the permissive nature of the free-tier user agreement. IOTA is a Tangle[1], which is coordinated[2] flow, similar to a Directed Acyclic Graph[3]. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "overrun nodes" but by virtue of how the network operates, this should not be an issue unless everyone is sticking with only the default nodes in their configuration, but that delves into a conversation of programmer vs user error that isn't pertinent to this thread. Some of us choose to run full nodes without incurring any speed loss, and it doesn't seem to be much of an issue of not having enough of them, only that people aren't using them. Even still, this has not degraded network performance.
