jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
Hello all!

I was sick of waiting for the arp / nmap commands to work single-threaded to find the raspberry pi's on my network.

Also, arp only works for devices you have seen previously, so you could easily miss things.

I posted benchmarks on the readme. Interested in feedback, suggestions, and please pull requests if you want to help improve it. Installs via pip and python 3x only! PS - since I am lazy, it also auto-suggests the network range you are connected to to be the network it searches, so you don't have to type it in.

jamescampbell··on Backing Up My Kindle Ebooks (2018)
I figured out how to finally get this to work. For Mac OS, you have to install an old version of the Kindle App. Version 1.23.1 appears to be the last version that downloads AZW3 formatted ebooks that can then be converted to EPUB easily with the DeDRM plugin. All later versions appear to be broken. Also, the Kindle app will silently update to the latest version unless you turn off the auto-update option. I converted all of my paid books to epub and not buying any more through Amazon. This post inspired me to do this before it is too late and the old version is no longer compatible to future OS versions.

Got a few successful signups today, thanks everyone for the support! Im working hard to improve the service, always love the feedback good and bad. Thanks again!

You believe something false. I created amazingly secure dns zone entries glue records that are hosted on a cloud backbone. The very fact you cant see past that firewall of dns glue is proving the point of exactly how secure they are and how trustworthy the service is. Please educate yourself fully and dont jump to a conclusion like this. You really think I am running this out of my basement on bare metal or something? Would love to pentest this service since it is so early. I would be dumb not to. I guess I can transparently share the results of load at lets say 100k concurrent connections?

Thanks for the response and that is definitely a fair question. I removed the lol and dude-o, apologies, I shouldn’t be rude to potential customers and naysayers alike. I am going to do a bit of research and get back to you. At the end of the day, I feel like people want to support indie vs larger corps. Call it the middle finger to the man effect. I don't want that to be the sole reason. Id like to think you like the purple stylish N as well. ;) Seriously will get back to you in a bit. Checking on security things that I believe are not as robust in Fastmail and others. I have a warrant canary up too, not linked yet. But dont want my market to be criminals either so... hmm.

Also. Vps $5 / month is $60 per year. So yes go ahead and run your own but pay _more_ than my $50 per year service that is handled for you.

You sound mad, which undercuts your message. Please, you are not my target market, and also please go ahead and run your own mailserver. Anything is better than Google IMO, I dont want to be a product of a free service. Each one of us needs to decide how much privacy and eyeballs to ads they give up per “free” service they use. Also Google for business is $60 year per person so my service is actually cheaper at $50 per year with personal cloud storage that is not in Google’s servers. Some percentage of the population wants that alone because even being associated with Google and having data stored on their servers are their main pain points and would pay $50 per year to ease that pain.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Normail – un-fancy email with cal, contacts, and Nextcloud $50/year
Exactly. 90% of just US market doesnt understand how to run their own domain let alone setup a linux mail-server. Appreciate the feedback on the $50/year. We will see what the market will bear. Does fastmail offer cloud storage included in the $50? I used to use them way back in 2013 but have been running my own mailserver for 6 years now, so I need to update the competitor landscape a bit. I garuntee with Fastmail you dont get the same level of one-on-one support you get with this ;)

Yes.

It is cool, you are not my target market segment then. Enjoy the big G.

It actually provides the user with QR code to scan to open the link within that is your specific mobile profile to install on your iPhone that shows up as a Configuration Profile in settings with all of your information and mail account magically appearing in the mail app.
jamescampbell··on Setting Up an Ad-Blocking VPN with WireGuard and Pihole
I found the big blocklist collection to really help augment the lists of blocked URLs. https://firebog.net/ If you login to the web UI of your Pi-hole instance, you can easily add more lists in the settings -> blocklist tab. Specifically the "ticked" lists: https://v.firebog.net/hosts/lists.php?type=tick
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Journali.sm, a Newsfeed for News
Looks like something where you can take free https://newsapi.org json data and put it into a vue.js single view web app in about 2 hours. Good idea. If you add login, signup, saved articles, and paid / ads you would have something.
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
That depends on how you design it. OP said “super simple” so assuming a very basic feature set and maintainable code.
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: Which tool do you use to create beautiful diagrams?
Monodraw is great. Well worth it.
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: Which tool do you use to create beautiful diagrams?
I disagree. I found draw.io really simple and fast compared to visio.
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: What happened to Pinboard?
Works great for me and I will continue to support him. The bookmarklet continues to be great as well as the API. Paying customer and will remain until I roll my own solution someday.
jamescampbell··on Quora User Data Compromised
Keepass is great, but it is somewhat slower and more clicks to get passwords into forms as opposed to 1Password or LastPass.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Dark Reader extension – Dark mode for every website
This is a beautifully done extension. Using it both in Safari and in Firefox Nightly right now.
jamescampbell··on How we solved our office Wi-Fi problems
Sources for all of these claims? I have and recommend their products wholeheartedly. This isnt something that is opinionated. Their pro products are amazing. Maybe you are referencing outdated or consumer level product offerings? Giving you benefit of the doubt and just going to say, right and roll my eyes.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Fugitive.chat a non-tracking anonymous chat web application
I worked on this as an exercise in 1. generating a captcha (not relying on pre-created images that can be spoofed over time) 2. having a countdown refresh timer of 30 seconds completely in CSS 3. No javascript so no ability to track user activity 4. A place for people to publicly and privately chat.

Private chats aren't working yet, but almost.

I haven't touched the project in about six months, but need to get some ideas and feedback to get back into it again.

Thanks

jamescampbell··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Been using my tt-rss instance and Fiery Feeds on my iphone for a while now. Fiery Feeds does some magic to get the full articles in case they only display preview snippets.
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: Mailing lists that HN readers ought to know about?
2read.today for its mix of tech, tools, and misc interesting article links. https://2read.today
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: Typical work hours
Mostly 8 hours depending on if I get caught up in code and then stay half the evening to get the damn thing working finally again after breaking something critical even though I was just going to change the stylesheet.
jamescampbell··on Twitter CEO Dorsey Apologizes to Developers
I've found PAWS to be indispensable for investigating twitter and other apis in a visual way. It allows you to parse out and in the parameters you are setting and seeing. Saved me a lot of headache trying to break out the nested JSON mess. Not sure I can post a link here but it is Paws 2 in the app store.
jamescampbell··on Snake: Full Python Scripting in Vim
This might finally get me to switch from Sublime Text 3 to VIM. Been looking for an excuse to make the jump anyway.
jamescampbell··on Ask HN: Founders, what are your favorite interview questions and why?
The second one is especially important to me during the hiring process. It is such an underrated skill to be able to explain something to make it easily understandable to someone who knows nothing / little about it. Thanks
jamescampbell··on How to install or remove fonts in Linux
this is great, I was looking for a guide to look at fonts in depth on Ubuntu, as I already know how in OSX. Thanks!
