jamescampbell··on Show HN: IndiePaper – An easy way to write and sell self-published books
In publishing context, typeset usually implies / means printing physical copy, I think you mean "beautifully formatted ebooks"?
jamescampbell··on Manyverse – A social network off the grid
_but why blockchain_
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Arxiv.org on IPFS
Voting (as was bore out in many examples including digg.com and elsewhere) becomes a mob rule situation and variation of tyranny of the commons without a novelty algorithm in addition to total votes. If you just go by totals, it will be easily gamified and rendered useless as a metric.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: A library for reading PST files (written in Go/Golang)
This is great. I think there is a theory going that any tool that exists in Python will eventually be ported to golang (and be 10x better).
jamescampbell··on Show HN: AirClick – Note taking/sharing designed for developers
So it is basically like you took an open source trello codebase and cloned it and rebranded it as a notes tool even though it is still card based and taggable and groupable like trello? I don't get it.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: VentScape – Minimalistic site to vent, chat and see others do the same
Some feedback:

1. Would love to see it as historical scroll back of peoples vents, maybe keep for past 24 hours rolling?

2. Would be cool to go along with 1 to have vote up or down button to self-regulate and also to see vents / rants of day.

jamescampbell··on Show HN: VentScape – Minimalistic site to vent, chat and see others do the same
This gives me an idea of building a type of web application firewall that would be used for chat related sites like this that would automatically block bots/spammers/trolls.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Prototype for a New Search Engine
I would use it. You could probably wrap current search engines and crawl sites for <ad> tags etc. and label them as ad vs non ad from there in very basic way and them get more complicated with built-up heuristics.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
In my experience, every developer that I hired self-taught was 10x better at solving problems and getting things done themselves than traditionally taught.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
You just save that as a new bookmark after updated your endpoint and you can gather that data quickly.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
Yeah its not that bad, here is a simple bookmarklet example that grabs current url and posts it to your endpoint (mailephant in this case). Might be a good first step.

  javascript:q=location.href;if(document.getSelection)%7Bd=document.getSelection();
  %7Delse%7Bd='';%7D;p=document.title;void(open('https://mailephant.email/views/curate.html?
  showtags=yes&url='+encodeURIComponent(q)+'&description='+encodeURIComponent(d)+'&
  title='+encodeURIComponent(p),'Mailephant','toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes,width=550,height=700'));
jamescampbell··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
I just tried it out and it works. https://multy.me/l3uepo
jamescampbell··on Show HN: I built Multy – Generate a short URL to share a list of websites
I would love a browser add-on to go with this to gather up the links as you browse. I used to do this with mailephant (now defunct) that allowed me to queue up links and snippets of text related to links in a nice list to email along with an email template. good work and definitely useful.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: 128-bit, roughly-ordered, URL-safe UUIDs
I am with you. This makes no sense to me. But I also have wrapped userdata or account data in a generated hash to quickly have access to the underlying account info / expiration info etc. I think it is easier to justify why to implement vs. why not to implement.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Userbase – Auth and E2E encrypted storage in a few lines of code
The pricing model is amazing. Either free up to 100 users or a modest under $100 USD per year for unlimited. Perfection.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Userbase – Auth and E2E encrypted storage in a few lines of code
I also love the security write up.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Userbase – Auth and E2E encrypted storage in a few lines of code
I had a similar setup using redis and zsets so this type of use case and implementation makes sense to me.
jamescampbell··on Can I make Findpi even faster?
I am wondering, give the constraint of keeping it in Python as a pypi library, can I optimize my code further? My benchmarks against nmap could also use improved rigor.
jamescampbell··on Stop Worrying and Git YOLO
Git yolo for life!
jamescampbell··on I built a lay-down desk
Yes. Not sure why he built it this way at all. Makes no sense to me.
jamescampbell··on I built a lay-down desk
Wow. Wow. Wow. I have nothing else to say.
jamescampbell··on Cloudflare and the Wayback Machine, joining forces for a more reliable Web
My heart shuddered when I read the headline. I can’t be alone in the fear.
jamescampbell··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
Beast mode has been great. I want a python cli for it and heaven.
jamescampbell··on SpiderFoot: OSINT collection and reconnaissance tool
I've used and setup SpiderFoot for others. It works fine and usually does enough that it helps more than hurts.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
That is a great guide as well, most of my setups are headless and wireless. Cheers
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
fixed and pushed, 1.0.4 released.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
Ah, just found it, https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/a/100513/36948 The Raspberry Pi 4 has the new standard mac address, so findpi would miss that right now! Will fix this and push 1.0.4 release asap.
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
Thanks, interesting, I was going off of this, I thought, canonical list: https://gist.github.com/aallan/b4bb86db86079509e6159810ae9bd... that only has the one Mac Address on it. I also found a second source to back up the claim that DC:A6:32 should be added as well here: https://dnslytics.com/mac-address-lookup by searching for Raspberry Pi. Thanks for pointing this out!
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
nice!
jamescampbell··on Show HN: Findpi find raspberry pis on your network faster than NMAP
I thought I posted the command in the readme, nmap -sP. Yeah I remember reading about nmap adding parallelization. According to the link you shared: "By default, Nmap calculates an ever-changing ideal parallelism based on network performance". So my benchmarks are based on comparing against that. I don't know why my implementation is faster, but the three tests I performed show that findpi is faster. I guess because I am forcing more threads than nmap's ever-changing ideal is allocating?
