jameane··on Defense of Amazon's Face Recognition Tool Undermined by Only Known Police Client
Why is it considered acceptable risk to deploy something that can't recognize large swaths of the population. If your FR fails in tests to recognize Oprah Winfrey - it's broken.

I'm disappointed that a tools with a record of poor testing on women and non-white people is even allowed in "production" environment. We need to have a higher bar on what counts as commercial-ready for AI and facial recognition in things that impact people, and in particularly the justice system. We need to be much more cautious.

jameane··on Firefox 66 to block automatically playing audible video and audio
Totally. I hate browsing to my local news site - SFGATE because it is always crashing my browser. They have multiple videos autoplaying and even blocking the content on the page. So frustrating.
jameane··on Germs and ancient migrations help explain our world of 'haves' and 'have nots'
I'm not sold on the hypothesis that Europe and Asia were way ahead technologically, because honestly (mostly Europeans) did all they could to eliminate any culture indigenous cultures in the Americans and Africa, ignored them and devalued them completely. And definitely didn't make any attempts to understand or document what was going on before they got there. So likely lots of informaiton got lost along the way.

Yes, proximity helps with cross pollination - but there are hundreds of distinct ethnic groups in the Americans and Africa that also traveling, cross-pollinated and shared. History decided to group them together and call these all one big group.

jameane··on Prisons Are Quietly Building Databases of Incarcerated People’s Voice Prints
But the American prison system is wholly designed to punish certain people almost exclusively. There is a reason it is deemed the "new Jim Crow."
jameane··on Goodbye Big Five: Google
Apple was really slow to the party on transit directions. And it doesn't have biking directions. For me driving trips are less than 20% of my trips so not having both transit and biking is a deal breaker.

I do like the parking spot rememberer though.

jameane··on Surprises from Analyzing Spotify Streaming Data
On a somewhat related topic - the How I Built This episode with the Zumba founders is fascinating. https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/national-public-radio/how-i...

spoiler alert One of their biggest revenue streams is with artists and music labels launching their songs in Zumba classes via the "official" playlists. Zumba is an excellent promotion channel for Latin music/island music and other "tropical" music.

The non-english language music is huge and works completely different than the rest of the pop charts.

jameane··on Oracle allegedly underpaid $400M in wages to underrepresented employees
It depends. I have been penalized for negotiating as well as have been rewarded. I do remember distinctly irritating a hiring manager when I responded to her inquiry of "how much do you want to make" with "whatever is the prevailing market rate is" She wanted me to give her a number and I politely played hard ball not wanting to undersell myself. Anyway the hiring manager decided that approach made me difficult.

Women are often penalized for not being "nice" in the workplace as well. It may happen in the hiring process or show up later in performance reviews. It is a delicate dance of negotiating, being strong and being "non-threatening."

jameane··on Oracle allegedly underpaid $400M in wages to underrepresented employees
One of my friends (white female) is a long time Oracle employee. Oracle systemically underpays "underrepresented people." She ended up finding out she was making 40-50% less than new interns were getting out of college. And was underpaid compared to her male peers with less responsibility and impact.

She ended up getting a raise and additional stock to make up for it, after her VP got involved to rectify the situation. Her boss was like "whatever."

So imagine if white women are underpaid - it is a lot worse for people for color.

jameane··on Companies Manipulate Glassdoor by Inflating Rankings and Pressuring Employees
Now I don't even post Glassdoor reviews until I have been gone for 6 months or more. And particularly with a small team, wait until there is significant turnover so my review won't be easily attributed to me.

I have worked at a few places, when responding to Glassdoor reviews, have sent out a solicitation to current employees to leave review to drown out the negative ones.

It's too bad what started as a good way to get some insight into companies has turned over once it monetizes...

jameane··on Student debt hinders millennial homeownership
But do not disregard the other advantages you may have to help you pay off that debt in 3 years: being married so you can share costs access to well paying jobs presumably direct or indirect family support (e.g. being able to live with family cheaply so your income can be directed to debt payments)

We have told people, particularly people with low income or disadvantaged backgrounds, that college is the ticket to a high paying job. And then for-profit and other sketchy institutions prey on these people to get them to take out loans for ow value degrees. That probably aren't even completed.

The chapter in "Weapons of Math Destruction" on how for-profit colleges use "big data" to prey on low income people is terrifying. They look for people getting government assistance and other indicators of "struggle" and use facebook retargeting to bombard them with ads on why they need to go to college at a for profit institution.

You kind a have to luck out on a lot of parameters to easily pay off student loan debt. Even Barack Obama couldn't pay off his student loan debt until recently.

jameane··on When Broadway Became Broadway
Interesting point about Broadway being disconnected from pop music coinciding with a decline...
