jallen_dot_dev··on Why doesn't TypeScript properly type Object.keys?
> I must redundantly ensure you know this number is a number! Even though you can easily convert it to one if you need to, and move on! Yay

I don't get where you're coming from. Yeah you can easily convert something to a number[1], so isn't it a good idea to force a dev to do that easy conversion by emitting a compile-time error if they don't? Because if they don't, and the value doesn't get coerced correctly, then the code blows up at runtime.

[1] Except when you can't and you get NaN

> You can’t just limit the check to private subs because it’s not known if they are private or not at the time.

That's not necessarily true. Perhaps the status of subreddits is cached (because there's no reason to hit the DB 100 times/second to check if r/funny is private or public). But for a given request to a private sub, it would need to check each user.

jallen_dot_dev··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
Sure, but that type of traffic is expected and they can handle it with things like caching and autoscaling. I'm suggesting that a part of the system that usually doesn't get a lot of requests wasn't designed to handle a huge influx of requests.
jallen_dot_dev··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
Wild guess: visiting a private sub requires an extra call to a service/db to check if the user can view it. Normally there are only a small number of these checks because private subs were usually small communities. Now, many large subs having switched private is causing some poor mircoservice somewhere to get hammered.
jallen_dot_dev··on Weird GPT-4 behavior for the specific string “ davidjl”
Fair enough on the social activity aspect. So why is "upvote your fellow counting comrades" rule #1?
jallen_dot_dev··on Weird GPT-4 behavior for the specific string “ davidjl”
I know they're just Internet points but they are supposed to serve as a social signal that somebody has contributed (meaningful) content. Also some subreddits require a certain amount of karma to post. And finally, this activity is just useless spam.

I never implied it was such a big deal as to warrant your snark.

Looks like a voting ring for farming karma. Not sure why reddit allows it.

jallen_dot_dev··on US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles
Not only that, but when they're here on Earth they get from point A to point B by actually traveling the distance through the air. Slow enough for us to see. You'd think these aliens with FTL technology would just appear to us as popping in and out of existence when they change position.

They seem a little too domestic. It reminds me of how ancient people thought the Sun rode across the sky in a chariot. Because how else would the Sun get around but the same way we do?

Technically the thing you hold and use is a transaction output, and once an unspent transaction output (UTXO) is spent it can't be spent again. So from that perspective it is consumed!

jallen_dot_dev··on AI Will Create More Developers, Not Less
It's not clear to me that the new "loom" won't just operate itself completely.

That's the problem with comparing this to previous tech advances. Past advances made people much more efficient at some task, but it still required the people to work the new thing. But now we have a new thing that might be able to work itself.

jallen_dot_dev··on AI Will Create More Developers, Not Less
It can learn from it's own users. People paste their code into GPT for context, so it'll see new patterns that way. People paste the error message that results from some bad code GPT spit out, it learns from context plus the error text what the correct code should be.

Wouldn't that only be affirming the consequent if it were the following?:

> If it rains, I drive home. I drove home. Therefore, it rained. <-- logical fallacy

Because, for example, you could've driven home for some other reason. But that wasn't the statement.

> If it rains, I drive home. I didn't drive home. Therefore, it didn't rain.

How could it possibly have rained without violating the statement "If it rains, I drive home." given you didn't drive home?

It's simple: they thought they could later sell it for more. Celebrities hawking it is "bullish" because other people (suckers) will see the hype and want to buy their bags. Unfortunately for them, they were the suckers.

The scam I've only recently began seeing is the Paypal Invoice scam. You'll get an email directly from Paypal saying you owe money for an antivirus subscription or for some service or something.

I didn't fall for it because I figured anyone with a Paypal account can generate and send an invoice through Paypal to any email address. But I wouldn't be surprised if this scam gets a lot of people. It's a well known company, the email is directly from them, and it's a legit looking invoice saying they owe money.
