jalcine··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I need to clean up this page but I'm working on a local(-ish) book collection tool (calling it Livtet for "book head" in Haitian Kreyol). https://www.jacky.wtf/projects/livtet/ has some notes but https://man.sr.ht/~jacky/livtet is much better. It's been fun using Lua to externalize a lot of logic (and I'm looking into using https://github.com/teal-language/tl because I love me some typing.

Outside of that, I've been blogging a lot more (https://www.jacky.wtf/essays/ - August looks so full, ha) and now I'm writing about things I'm reading too (https://www.jacky.wtf/links/). Been doing this to try to ween off social media and rely on places like this to share stuff.

jalcine··on Ask HN: What do you monitor on your servers?
looks around I use `htop`
jalcine··on A self-authenticating social protocol
Strong agree. It would even allow for more seamless transitioning between silos and sovereign identities.
jalcine··on IndieAuth – A federated login protocol using one's own domain name
Fetching profile information isn’t part of it because it lets people do it in the way that they feel most comfortable. Conventionally, though, you can pull the useful bits by fetching their h-card https://indieweb.org/h-card as noted here https://indieweb.org/IndieAuth#Where_do_I_get_user_informati...

jalcine··on Handshake: An experimental peer-to-peer root DNS
About damn time.
jalcine··on Building a Kickass Portfolio
Aye. Thanks for linking me. Was wondering why I had a spike in traffic.
jalcine··on Show HN: Black Friday deals for developers
People just want to make (even more) money.
jalcine··on Show HN: Black Friday deals for developers
This thing has Apple so far up its ass, systemd can't even come out the other end.
jalcine··on I taught my black kids their elite upbringing would protect them
Realistically, I blame the father for being so hopeful in people. Living in the 60s should have been a blatant sign that racism isn't only prevalent in the US, it's what it was built on. It's not going away and instead of making them more submissive and obedient to the laws of the land, they should have been more proud what it mean to be Black. It reads like he wanted them to be more submissive. No wonder the kid ran away in fear.
jalcine··on What are you building over the holidays?
Finishing up a MVP at 4:30 AM EST. No biggie.
jalcine··on What are you building over the holidays?
Why not split this into sub modules? Like letting Rails have its own portion so that you can add in this like Sinatra, Nokogiri and the likes?
jalcine··on Poll: What OS do you prefer for Web Development?
Big fan of Linux (and in turn FOSS projects) so I'm a KDE + Ubuntu (moving to Debian when I can get all of my PPAs in easily) kind of guy. I use Krita/Karbon for slicing up PSDs and making quick vector images, Pencil for wireframes and light mockups and mainly Konsole, Vim and tmux for all of my webdev works (as well as Chrome and Firefox).

As long as you conform to standards, webdev is easy.

jalcine··on Poll: What OS do you prefer for Web Development?
I use KDE mainly because it feels a lot faster than GNOME and Unity and because it moves out of the way when I don't need it. And the smart-as-shit rendering engine for Oxygen makes GNOME apps look native to KDE so it's like I'm at home. I use my laptop for gaming and work.

Lately? Lol, that's how he is. We can't eliminate the bad in people. It adds a bit of spice.
jalcine··on Reducing Raspberry Pi footprint
Definitely some useful notes in this one. Didn't know that SD cards were so small!
jalcine··on What I learned from others' shell scripts
Might inject those `tput` color commands into my shell

jalcine··on Laziness & The Web Designer: How Some Tools Make Designers Lazy
Enough said, Macaw is going to be one of those tools that separate incapable designers from the ones who know why flexbox is coming to be and what it means.
jalcine··on ElementaryOs Luna released
I'd like to nudge in one thing: option flexibility. I'm still downloading and about to try it out; but I hope that the setting does allow the user to tweak everything they can tweak and not hide options away for the sake of hiding things. My personal thing, but it's shared with many, is that flexibility can lead to a personally complete design.
jalcine··on ElementaryOs Luna released
I'm downloading this now and going to throw it up in a live VM. To be honest, aside from the work-space management and what not in the video; that desktop looks close to my KDE 4.11 desktop here.
jalcine··on A Black Guy that Codes
Fixed all of my links to do just that. Thanks for the time.
jalcine··on Ask HN: Developer laptop under $1500?
Yeah, it's due to the graphics card. I didn't find that exact one with a higher resolution. Personally, however, for web dev, it's the perfect sign since it's right in the middle (closer to phone/tablets). I had a 1920x1200 before (Dell) but now I love this and not worrying too much about testing on devices.

jalcine··on A Black Guy that Codes
Funny you mention that; I've been to the most recent meetup at Thoughtworks and I'm trying to be more interactive in said community.

If you do want to access it directly, try the following:

jalcine··on A Black Guy that Codes
It's working fine for me; I `dig`'d my domain to make sure DNS and everything was okay, too.
jalcine··on A Black Guy that Codes
It's a penny in a quarter (as opposed to a dime in a dozen).
jalcine··on Blind Men, Treasure, Buses, and Cops
That $20 trick is something I have been doing personally for a long time (can't anymore with the Nexus 4).
jalcine··on Ask HN: Time to give up on Qt?
Your best bet, as many have prescribed here, will be Qt. It works DECENTLY well under GNOME and fantastically under KDE (ofc) if you're concerned about the Linux market, and works pretty well on Windows, too. Personally, with QML and the ability to style applications using stylesheets (not full CSS) and adding scripting support with QtScript is a win-win for me.

However, it really depends probably on the kind of application you're looking to build. If anything (probably silly too), you could build a HTML5 container using Qt, build a API that communicates for native actions and render the rest of the application in HTML5. Better off just making a SaaS, however.

I don't know, guys. I moved away from Oovoo because it looked ulgy (for one) and because of those annoying ads. Now that the one service I use a lot and push for others to use is doing EXACTLY what I try to avoid; collecting a bunch of cloud servers and hosting a service at a cheap price doesn't sound too bad of an idea.
jalcine··on [dead]
Why do all of that? I might be repeating myself, but why not use XMPP's video chatting services for this?
