jakkinabox··on Ask HN: Which android handset you use?
Xperia x8. Custom 2.2 rom on it (Floyo). There's a 2.3 rom available apparently but I think it is still buggy.
jakkinabox··on Ask HN: does design matter?
HN seems to be popular enough even though it serves up link expired things way too often. Does that count as a UX problem?

Digg and Gawker are good examples of driving users away with bad design.

jakkinabox··on Snooping: It's not a crime, it's a feature
With that technology, no wonder Color got so much funding. The list of stuff that they can find out about you is amazing. That would produce some very targeted ads.
jakkinabox··on Ask HN: Have you ever been unable to obtain a domain/business name you wanted?
I definitely suffer from falling in love with names. I had the perfect name but I sat on my idea too long and it got taken (but isn't being used which just sucks). I had finally moved on and came to the current one I want.

I checked the whois records and the domain expires (very) soon. I doubt the owner will let it go but if he did, what's the best way to get it? Does backordering it on GoDaddy alert the owner that someone wants to buy it?

I will look into Escrow.

jakkinabox··on Is Facebook geared to dullards?
Weird, I skipped over the part where he was selling the book, even though I read the comments.

Thanks for posting this though. It's always good to know peoples motivations for doing stuff as it naturally introduces a bias.

jakkinabox··on Ask HN: Which of these 3 email subject lines most grabs your interest?
I say 3.

2 sounds like something I have to read and I probably wouldn't be bothered.

jakkinabox··on Ask HN: Serious FB alternatives?
It seems like your problem with Facebook is your friends rather than the platform. While I think letting friends add friends to groups is slightly strange behavior, none of my friends have abused this. I think Facebook sees it similar to being tagged in a photo by a friend which can make sense. Photo tagging can be abused too - but only by people you allow.
jakkinabox··on Ruby editor?
My setup on Ubuntu is as follows. I use a drop down terminal called Yakuake. It drops down from the top of my screen when I press F12. From there I can create a ruby document by typing

vim example.rb

You don't have to use or learn all of vims features straight away. I probably use 1% of it but I like it. :w to save, :wq to save and quit.

jakkinabox··on Ask HN: I'm giving away my startup taketake.com for free - who wants it?
When I go to peoples websites I always ask my self "Would I use this?". At first I was like "nah" but by the end of the video I was "hmm yeah let me sign up!".

It's a shame you're giving this away.

jakkinabox··on The Color of Money
Sounds like a good idea but will people use it long term? I doubt it. The only draw to use the app all the time is for entertainment. If people don't get entertainment at least 80%* then they will probably stop using it.

*I just made that figure up obviously but I hope you get my point.

jakkinabox··on Google silently correcting search terms. Anyone else having this problem?
I have experienced this and it's really, really annoying. A solution is to put the word in quotation marks.
jakkinabox··on Groupon accused of 'bait and switch' advertising on Google.com in lawsuit
Groupon and Livingsocial always have muffins in their ads. You click on them but you never get a deal for muffins! It's outrageous.
jakkinabox··on Sequoia To Color Labs: Not Since Google Have We Seen This
I can't find it in the market. I tried searching "color" and "color labs". Is it available outside the USA?
jakkinabox··on Back to the front of the pack: Ars reviews Firefox 4
On ubuntu, yes. On windows, no. Chrome opens tabs kinda slow on ubuntu for some reason.
jakkinabox··on Zero-Dollar Validation: How to Vet Startup Ideas For Free
I pitched my idea to my gf and she said it was dumb :( I started working on it anyway (heh) and since I have seen funding given to a similar idea on a TV program and have seen a similar idea get a lot of attention on HN (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2349587).

So I would recommend trying more than one person anyway and don't let it get you down if the few people you try don't give you a good response.
