I can see Telegram broadcast channels (or Signal/Matrix groups with only sending permissions for admin) filling the void for people who'd like to "microblog" short updates like a blog, but just for friends.

That seems like properly hard problem - reviews aren't objective facts like OSM data & verification/spam would be tricky.
It's well worth trying Element or FluffyChat on iOS/Android.
I see on this beta announcement there are a number of mentions of Matrix: https://meta.discourse.org/t/introducing-discourse-chat-beta...
Why on earth are we pulling ~100s of kg while there is still 8.8 million tonnes entering the ocean each year?! [1]
aka Ocean Bound Plastic, I've seen a few products use it (but I don't know how to go about certification): https://www.hermanmiller.com/en_apc/better-world/sustainabil...

See https://www.beeper.com/ or https://element.io/element-one for a hosted product, or use https://github.com/spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy to self host.
Are the threads compatible with threads in the spec that Element is adopting?
I tried sending you an email but it bounced!
There are plenty [1] of sites & apps (some quite large) that don't correctly attribute OSM data according to the legal requirements [2].

> Only a small thing, but due to Signals strict phone-desktop pairing mechanism, when registering Axolotl, both phone and regular Desktop wont work anymore.
> Also, you cant use Axolotl on Desktop together with Signal mobile.
> After deleting the Axolotl registration I had to wait a while to be able to register on Signal again, I didnt loose any backups and my codes didnt change.
> Nonetheless a warning should be displayed at the beginning, that users wanting to use regular mobile (iOS, Android) and Desktop (Windows, macOS, Flatpak or Snap), they should use a second phone number for testing.

Matrix would be a lot more welcoming to a new client :)
It would be awesome if they supported Matrix - you could then archive many things via a bridge (https://matrix.org/bridges/).
I've found their maps are very slow here in Australia (I assume their infra is Europe based), and the I find the geocoding frequently gives me objects in other countries when I know OSM has an object with that exact name in my map view, but I check up on it every so often.
I'm waiting for someone to build a Google Maps alternative (generic consumer oriented) product with Mapbox, their maps (OpenStreetMap based) are awesome.
(I also do a lot of OSM mapping, so I know my edits when I see them :D)
Since Element has recently got chat bubbles I'm enjoying it more though.
How does Session compare to Matrix? Why another encrypted chat app that doesn't federate?
See the Matrix blogs at https://matrix.org/blog/category/this-week-in-matrix/ to see how these projects have been progressing.
I think there is space for another paid competitor also built on Matrix!
There are lots of open-source communities there, I imagine it would be helpful for debugging (and discovery of Matrix itself).
I'm on my second Pebble Time Steel now - I only had to get a new one because the waterproofing failed while I was surfing!
I've had two separate instances of strangers (in Sydney) coming up to me and bumping their wrist to my wrist, because they also had a Pebble and recognised mine. Really lovely community.
That sounds true as of 2015, however Matrix now has a large following in open source & in some governments & businesses. I can't find a list of orgs using Matrix but that would be interesting to see.
That would be a really interesting enterprise solution though - effectively replacing Slack/Teams for internal comms!
Awesome for platforms like Matrix [2] which are all about supporting federation and bridges to other services (such as Signal, which is hostile to federation [3]).
