jaifraic··on Open-source RGB lighting control for keyboards, fans, etc
> I ran a semi-popular German case-modding website and forum 19 years ago.

Was that casemodder.de by any chance?

I spent quite a lot of time there back in my teenage days.

jaifraic··on Amazon owns more than $2B worth of IPv4 addresses
But how often do people have to write down or dictate IP addresses?
jaifraic··on Adobe has released the last Flash update ever
Well, did it ever close?

I live in Germany and there are a few bars here that are open around the clock. Many of them hat to close for the first time in years because of the Corona lockdown.

There's an anecdote about the "Elbschlosskeller" in Hamburg: they didn't have a key for the front door at all, so they had to install a new lock to be able to lock up. Before that, the pub was open continuously for about 70 years

jaifraic··on Ask HN: Why do some timestamps on HN have a full stop at the end?
This comment should have a dot. The above one not.

I'm just gonna test this here.
jaifraic··on Stolen irreplaceable books found under floor of Romanian house
It sounds like a quite complicated, risky and expensive job to do just out of greed without any idea what to do with the stolen goods.
jaifraic··on My toothbrush streams gyroscope data
Because other humans pay money for this.

And we're probably not that far away from Health Insurance Companies using your toothbrush's data to calculate your rates.

And I can imagine the advertisements on the mirror you have to look at while shaving. Or before.

jaifraic··on Del.icio.us
I'm fairly sure "it's their birthday, so they get a tax break" won't work.
jaifraic··on When a customer refunds your paid app, Apple refunds its 30% cut [edited]
Or a userbase that for some reason dislikes and abuses you. Maybe you have made enemies because of some random political statemant. A large enough group could ruin you.
jaifraic··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
> Rich people may not eat more food, but they may eat food that is shipped in from all over the world. They don't drive dozens of cars at once, but they do have lots of things delivered, and tend not to take public transport as much. They also tend to fly a lot more (which is a big source of emissions), and live in big houses with lots of lights and area to heat and cool.

I think it may be the other way round. Rich people are able to buy locally sourced, sustainable grown groceries, whilst poor people have to settle for cheaper, intensively farmed ones. A good example would be meat. Meat of local, free range animals is way more expensive than meat of intensive animal farming. Same with cloth; poor people aren't able to choose between cheap or ethical/biological fair trade cloth. They have to choose that, which they can afford.

jaifraic··on Show HN: GIF Directions
Then what's up with the whole "directions" part?

In an answer to another comment you wrote:

> I'm requiring the users to make a leap from the title of the page 'Gif Directions' to uploading a video, which will become the directions.

Maybe you should clarify what you mean with "directions".

jaifraic··on Show HN: GIF Directions
Same. I skimmed through all comments in this thread and still have no idea what this service does.

From the intro video it seems to be a service that converts a video to a gif.

jaifraic··on Elevator.js – A “back to top” button that behaves like a real elevator
With Chromium based browsers you should be able to set every website to be muted at first. You'll only see a mute symbol on the tab when the tab tries to play sound.

If there is no sound at all, there shouldn't be an icon.

jaifraic··on Cameo's CEO on how he plans to disrupt Hollywood
How long till deepfakes make this obsolete?
jaifraic··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
Apparently the author read this and reacted quickly, or this is a nice coincidence - Dublin was added about an hour after your comment, with the video you suggested: https://twitter.com/driveandlisten/status/127301385524606157...
jaifraic··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
Yeah, this would be my feature request as well. If there are decent quality of night drives available for the city it would be nice to be able to switch to those.
jaifraic··on Facebook Helped Develop a Tails Exploit
Let's hope somebody works backwards and looks at patches made to the Tails video player and looks for something that could have been an exploit
jaifraic··on Facebook Helped Develop a Tails Exploit
They'll tell you who pays for the connection. They can't reliably tell you who uses it. Maybe it was a family member, roommate or anybody who knows the wifi password.
jaifraic··on T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T phone calls are failing across the US
So... it actually is a DDoS attack ;)
jaifraic··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
I've started to switch all my email stuff to https://uberspace.de/en/

It's a kind of shared hosting with full ssh (non-root) access. They offer a pre-installed Roundcube Webmailer, but you can host your own one as well.

I run my own Roundcube with my own Domain and configured a maildrop instance to sort incoming mails.

So far it works as a charm. The hoster is based in Germany and I trust them to be privacy-aware.

jaifraic··on Unable to deal with Chrome Extension Team, Kozmos is shutting down
This is a bit of an exaggeration, but: I bet you the arms industry is full of brilliant people as well, but developing systems that are designed to kill people is still wrong.
jaifraic··on Show HN: Make Your PDF Look Scanned
This. I had no idea what this did until I read a couple of HN-comments. The short introduction could mean a couple of things:

Just downgrading the pdf? Looking for a signature-like part and turns this to pseduo-handwritten characters, maybe changing the color? Something completely different?

Naturally, I did not want to upload a potentially confidential document to some random webservice.

I actually had a pdf file containing several pages of "Lorem ipsum" that I needed for another thing, but I deleted it yesterday because I was done with it.

jaifraic··on New Lenovo ThinkPad Range with Ryzen 4000 and 4000 Pro Mobile
For me, it's not about precision. With the Trackpoint I can rest my hands on the Keyboard/Homerow and I can use the pointer without having to move my hands at all.
jaifraic··on Show HN: I'm releasing my game for free
Some little improvements I'd like to see:

- an option to mute audio

- a counter to see how many moves I did by now

jaifraic··on The Great Toilet Paper Scare of 1973 (2014)
The way I understand it, they're talking about asian (super-)markets, not the marktes of Asia.

At least that's the way here in Germany. While flour, toilet paper, some sorts of canned food and random other stuff is sold out in most super markets, the small turkish shop down the street has everything in stock.

jaifraic··on I ordered a box of boxes from The Packaging Wholesalers via Amazon.ca
I wonder i you could exploit this 'bug'. Offer some cheap bought products for way to much money via Amazon. Boxed in wholesale boxes with clearly visible original barcode.

No one ever will buy your product, but it will be sent out in error, customers can keep it and Amazon reimburses you for it.

Repeat for profit.

jaifraic··on Pandas 1.0
Well, depends on what you want to achieve.
jaifraic··on Glenn Greenwald Charged with Cybercrimes in Brazil
I'm surprised that 2FA wasn't activated.
jaifraic··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
With the dmenu wrapper (passmenu) or something similar for rofi there is almost no need for a browser extension.
