jahabrewer··on How we solved our office Wi-Fi problems
Only thing I've found annoying about passthrough plugs is it's easy to not quite cut the wires flush with the end of the plug. This can make the plug not seat fully.

At least, this is true for me. Maybe I did it wrong.

Sounds like GAN in meatspace.

> The max takeoff weight of a Boeing 787 is 50 tons more than it's maximum landing weight

I honestly don't know, but could this be part of the design simply because the engineers know the plane will weigh less on landing? Seems like that design would change if so much mass from fuel was no longer lost/burnt.

Buy YNAB 4 (aka YNAB Classic). You'll have to import transactions manually, but I much prefer it to their subscription SaaS offering. I've used it for five years and love it.

I use a python script to download most transactions from banks/credit cards. https://sites.google.com/site/pocketsense/home/msmoneyfixp1/...

There are enough people who do this that you can figure out how to access the OFX endpoint for most financial institutions.

jahabrewer··on GDPR and automated email marketing
No, they don't. The closest thing is:

> Note: As an Azure customer, you are receiving this email because we are required to notify you of product changes that may affect your subscription. This is the only communication that you will receive directly from Microsoft regarding these product changes.

jahabrewer··on GDPR and automated email marketing
You must not get Azure emails.

jahabrewer··on Your company can increase voter turnout: make Election Day a company holiday
I think the only objection is that you don't have much of a secrecy guarantee. Votes could, in theory, be compelled.

That said, I love voting by mail. Super easy.

jahabrewer··on Google’s Project Fi now caps data bills at $60
Also worth noting is that you now "post-pay" for the data you used at the end of the billing cycle instead of pre-paying. I know that it works out roughly the same, but it always struck me as unnecessarily complex that I had to guess how much data I would use, get billed for that, then get refunded for what I didn't use.

> Lessons learnt by ransomware developers - rather than using a single pretty arbitrary test, always rely on a more robust statistical model to detect whether your code is running inside a sandbox.

I like to imagine that one of the developers on that team filed a tech debt item to do exactly this, was never able to get their manager to prioritize it, and is now pulling out their hair saying, "I told you so!"

I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a Republican candidate in the race. Not to degrade the author's efforts, but I wonder how much of the vote for the author was due to their being the only non-Democratic candidate.

Edit: I only mention this because "get 31% of the vote" is part of the headline. Part of it may be running in a race unopposed by the other major party.

Edit 2: My mistake, the percentage was part of the thread's original title, not the author's chosen title.

jahabrewer··on Nebia (YC S15), a Shower Head Start-Up, Receives Funding from Tim Cook of Apple
With some quick back-of-the-napkin math, I get just under 4 years of daily showers to break even (with their $400 retail price, assuming a generous $0.02/gal ($15/CCF), which is the highest residential marginal seasonal rate where I am).

If I wanted to reduce my water usage, I'd just take shorter showers and alternate days when I've not yet become smelly. These cost $0 and yield immediate savings.

jahabrewer··on Mark Cuban: If Your Company Is Moving For Tax Reasons, I'm Selling Your Stock
I find it difficult to balance my distaste for corporations that act irresponsibly with my laziness in regard to my investment portfolio. I use a slight variant on the three-fund portfolio (http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Three-fund_portfolio). I value its simplicity because it saves me time and gives an acceptable expected return. However, using large total market funds means that I'm invested in so many companies that it would take a very long time to investigate each one for responsibility.

Good on Mr. Cuban for standing up here.

> if you're patient and methodical, it's not terribly hard to win most fights, scratch-free

I was pretty satisfied with how they addressed that issue in Enemy Within. There are optional objectives that give you bonus resources if you reach them before they expire after a number of turns.

But yes, in Enemy Unknown, I gave up on my Classic runthrough after I realized that I could win easily if I just advanced slowly enough.
