jagger27··on Expanding on what we missed with sycophancy
My most cynical take is that this is OpenAI's Conway's Law problem, and it reflects the structure and sycophancy of the organization broadly all the way up to sama. That company has seen a lot of talent attrition over the last year—the type of talent that would have pushed back against outcomes like this.

I think we'll continue to see this kind of thing play out for a while.

Oh GPT, you're just like your father!

I prefer to frame it more like this: "People in your age range drive less or cannot legally do so and as such have few other options for transit, so we'll give you a discount. Also, the negative externalities of rail travel are far lower than other modes of transit so we should encourage as many people as possible to use it. When a frequent young user of rail transit grows out of the lower price bracket, they will likely continue to use the service to help keep it affordable for all."

jagger27··on Google Wallet launches new age and identity verification features (ZK proofs)
Call it woke or socialism, but perhaps it's within a society's interest to make travel affordable for people who don't necessarily have access to other modes of transit. It's the difference between equality and equity.

The Railcard website you linked is pretty clear.

> For those aged 16-25, save 1/3 off rail fares for days out, seeing family and friends and even festivals!

> For those aged 60 and over, save 1/3 off rail fares for days out, holidays, seeing family and friends, and theatre trips!

So, provide proof of age via ID and get a discount. It's very common on public transit for the young and elderly to get a discount.

jagger27··on Business co-founders in tech startups are less valuable than they think
If you have a shred of your own morals you’re less likely to have to compromise on those with an MBA who’s guaranteed not to have any.

HN has such an impeccable knack to optimize towards the least human interpretation of any given topic. You reflect your idols well.
jagger27··on Out of the Fog
Talking about tech as if it exists outside the context that surrounds it is like talking about farming without considering who it feeds. Sure you can totally do that, but let’s not talk about why that silo of oats is rotting when there are hungry people out there.

Peril, etc.

jagger27··on Out of the Fog
Separate tech from culture at your own blindfolded peril. Consider what a clean delineation between tech news and “real” news would mean, and what slant it would take on.

The Verge is publishing this piece in the context of today. There are undocumented migrants right now being moved around and out of country, put into detention centres, and being denied the due process that was previously in place. There is _a lot_ of tech in that ongoing story. To consider America’s history with forced migration at a time like this is perfectly reasonable.

Yeah exactly.

It might work with a C-section. Reassignment surgery isn’t stretchy enough for a live birth. For trans girls who start before male puberty they might get enough pelvic rotation for there to be enough room for it, though.

jagger27··on Encryption Is Not a Crime
Encryption is a threat to power structure. Of course if you're in power, and you're under threat, you criminalize threat.

As long as we preserve the knowledge of one-time pads, they will not take this power from us.

jagger27··on Dead trees keep surprisingly large amounts of carbon out of atmosphere
Kiln drying is an interesting idea to speed it up and prevent premature rot, but might offset some of the carbon impact since most industrial kilns use fossil fuels directly or upstream if electric.

Maybe it would be more effective to drop wet lumber off in the desert for a few years by rail before moving the dry lumber to permanent underground storage. This assumes two stages of transport to and from the desert would cost less carbon than transport to a kiln and then to storage.

I’m not convinced that the wood even needs to be dried before burying, though.

> Canada. Even Quebec, which insists on doing everything in French.

Quebec would be the one place in Canada where you’re expected to do business in French. Maybe New Brunswick? Even right across the river in Ottawa you’d have no reason to use French in any official capacity.

Sure, you might want a FR/EN selector at the top of your site since Quebec is a big market (within Canada).

This is a very (neo)liberal viewpoint. It’s economic liberalism. There’s nothing “conservative” about it at all.
