jaed··on My social network helped diagnose a rare disease that our doctors missed.
Check out Sermo - it's been around since 2006 or so and has an iPhone app that lets docs take a picture and get crowd-sourced advice. www.sermo.com

Google invites used as a ploy for registrations. Great job, guys.
jaed··on One Response to Rejection
Is it just me...or is this a little over-the-top? This essay makes PG out to be the second coming of Christ. YCombinator is great...but it's not the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. Keep building your product and pounding the pavement. As Coach K would say...next play.
jaed··on My Startup: A place for potential founders to meet
I was going to do a similar site like this last summer but decided not to. I'm looking to ditch the domain CoFoundMe.com for cheap if you're interested.
jaed··on Art of Money Getting, by P. T. Barnum (actual book, 1880)
This is great...thanks for the link!
jaed··on 23andme: Evil Or The Way Of The Future?
Navigenics (http://www.navigenics.com) is a KPCB-funded biotech that does something similar.
jaed··on Creative Hiring: Solve the puzzle in this jobs page and get an interview
Uhmmm...check the source code.
jaed··on Ask YC: Critique my Facebook app
Do we really need an app that helps spread gossip? I admit I haven't installed it and only took a tertiary glance at it...but if it does what it looks like, I think you should use your talents for Good and not for Evil :-)
jaed··on blog.pmarca.com: You have to love this industry
Just a clarification...Steve graduated.
jaed··on Kiva.org takes on world poverty with its peer-to-peer microfinance marketplace
MicroPlace.com just launched the other day and apparently actually allows you to charge a nominal interest rate so you can get a return on the loan. The point isn't to make oodles of money off of developing world entrepreneurs, but it is a slightly more attractive offer than Kiva's 0% interest loan. If you so decided, the interest you generate from MicroPlace could get then go back into another loan so the cycle continues again. Rinse, lather, repeat.
jaed··on Just launched! Asking for news.yc feedback.
LLC's protect against individual liability. They would be sueing the company, not the management team's personal assets.
jaed··on Are you going to change the world? (Really?)
Shooter--if you're interested, check out Altruistiq (www.altruistiq.com). Our entire mission is to create products and services that cater to the double bottom-line of social impact and profitability. We're working on a NASDAQ for the non-profit world to help NGOs raise financing a lot easier. There are no real capital markets in the non-profit world--everything is basically hand-to-mouth donations. We think a non-profit "stock" exchange could really change the way the US funds innovation in the social sector.

If you, or anyone else is interested in Doing Good while Doing Well, feel free to email me:

Sorry for what may seem like a plug...but this thread is all about trying to create true impact with your work, and I really would love to get in touch with like minded people on this subject. As someone else mentioned, we've been creating products for the richest 1% for way too long. There are 4 billion people living on $2 a day that we can impact with our skills and talents.

Let's get together and see how we can create real change.

jaed··on CMU professor gives his last lesson on life
It's sad that we have to be reminded of it, but this just reaffirms that the little bubble world of YC, TechCrunch, and Web 2.Oh really don't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of life. This guy wouldn't trade some extra time with his family for all the startups and VC cash in the world. It just puts things into perspective.
jaed··on Railsify: Directory for rails plugins & tools
http://www.pluginaweek.org too
jaed··on My startup idea: ClipArena.com - I made it in one week. What do you think?
Feature request: Please change the UI so it doesn't look so Web 2.Oh :-)

jaed··on Should Newspapers Become Local Blog Networks?
No. :-)
jaed··on Chime.TV (My tv/joost-like video startup just launched)
Just a suggestion: I reinstalled my machine and didn't install Flash yet. The site just brings up the alert box telling me I should go to www.flash.com to download it. I expected the site to provide a direct link to the flash download, but instead all I got after the alert box was a blank page.

Granted, many users will have flash installed, but if my mom didn't and and she tried using your site with the current configuration, she wouldn't bother after getting just a blank page. (Granted, I don't think mom will be browsing YouTube and MySpace videos...at least I hope not).

jaed··on "None of these have the potential to be a self-sustaining business"
I can't really disagree with him though, Reddit really is a Digg clone minus the UI.
jaed··on [dead]
"I think the Facebook platform is an epic, tectonic shift, a paradigm shift akin to Windows replacing DOS or the emergence of the Web itself."

Anyone else think this is a little over the top?

jaed··on At what point do you quit your dayjob to focus on your startup?
Wow...what a timely question. I just let my manager know today that I'd be leaving in a few weeks.

For me it was a combination of finances and introspection.

As far as finances go, I worked long enough to save a bit of money to work full-time, at least through the summer and a little beyond. That should give us enough initial runway.

The introspection part is obviously more personal. I'm young and naive enough to go out on a limb right now and do this. I've had almost a year of work experience, enough to know that I don't like working for someone else, and enough to get a taste for what works/doesn't in "real" company.

Of course it feels risky, but after a little soul-searching, you get to a point where you feel more at ease.

But I totally agree with Readmore:

"it's a liberating, and very scary, feeling. It's also great in that it totally focuses you."

But then again, how scary can it be? We're lucky to be entrepreneurs in America. We have a lot of blessings and opportunities people in other countries don't have. We aren't going to be shot, tortured, or starved by doing our startups (as much as we can joke about how painful it will be :-). We're not going to DIE. So let's enjoy the ride :-)

jaed··on Is telling your employer you're quitting to launch a startup a bad idea?
They own rights to what I create.
jaed··on Is telling your employer you're quitting to launch a startup a bad idea?
Even if the startup has nothing to do with your current work.
jaed··on Cambridge YC Alums: How'd you spend your funding?
Yeah we filed our own LLC formation for $90 in Delaware + ~$250 for our Registered Agent.
jaed··on Are we in a bubble? Your thoughts
When business models are acquisition and AdSense and products are features for MySpace I would venture to say yes, we are.

jaed··on Justin.tv on NPR (includes link to audio)
I don't know how "radical" the idea is. Justin.tv is "Web 2.0" for Jennicam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JenniCam).
jaed··on SFP Decisions are out!
Yeah we are going to be in Boston. Anyone else working on stuff gonna be around here?
jaed··on SFP Decisions are out!
Congrats to all the winners. And to those that didn't, here's a great link:

We're all lucky to even have the opportunity to work on our startups, in a country that actually rewards people for working hard.

As Steve Jobs said..."Stay hungry. Stay foolish." Have fun!
