jadence··on You get what you pay for.
Because nobody has ever had problems w/ expensive domestic contractors. * rolls eyes *

This story is meant to scare us away from offshoring but if I'm to be convinced I'd need to see some stats and studies that show wide-scale differences in code quality. Until then this story is just an anecdote and we all know how much those are worth.

jadence··on A Year After Program, Under 100 Hyundais Returned
Certainly not everyone would still need it and be able to afford it but the fact that many people would still need their car helps to explain why so few Hyundais were returned.
jadence··on A Year After Program, Under 100 Hyundais Returned
FatWallet Finance discussion of the article: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/finance/981895

I think this comment really nailed it: I never understood the program. If I lost my job, I'd still need a car to drive to interviews.

jadence··on Freakonomics: Why California’s Tuition Hike Might Be a Good Thing
Who said they didn't start their own companies? My grandparents did as did several of my aunts and uncles, as did I.

And those who didn't start their own companies didn't simply throw money under a mattress. The money was indeed invested w/ thw childrens' future as the primary reason.

jadence··on Freakonomics: Why California’s Tuition Hike Might Be a Good Thing
I read this article w/ very mixed reactions.

Part of me was all for the price discrimination to help "level the playing field."

Another part of me just cringed. By making price discrimination like this the norm, the incentive to work hard for your children is greatly diminished. I know my grandparents scratched and clawed their way for every penny they could earn/save to pay for my parent's/aunt's/uncle's educations. They in term did the same for myself, my siblings, and my cousins. I am doing the same for my future children (My friends often tell me to live a little and comment about my dumpy apartment, my used furniture, etc while my savings and investments grow. No, I never skip out on the bill, not chip in for drinks, group gifts, etc)

If there is going to be price discrimination as described in the linked article why should I live so frugally for my future childrens' education? My future kids rich peers' parents will cover the extra expenses while I live lavishly now! Why should I save now and be the sucker?

How can the system help those who are disadvantaged while not indirectly encouraging people to be financially irresponsible? My gut reaction is to make educational "cheaper" for the rich while still accessible to those who really want it. Yes, I know this thought is antithesis to the linked article.

jadence··on Tell PG: Cal football game (same day/campus as Startup School) to start @ 1:30
Okay. I knew that you knew about the game as I had mentioned it before (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=764601) but wasn't sure if you knew about the start time as it was just announced.

Thought the game's start time would be useful info to know when scheduling the lunch break and such (eg - Trying to get a bite to eat when the fans are already in the stadium will be a lot faster than going when they're all having their pre-game chow).

Thanks for putting together another Startup School!

jadence··on Tell PG: Cal football game (same day/campus as Startup School) to start @ 1:30
He knows there is a game (I posted that) but kick off time wasn't announced until yesterday and YC/PG may want to take it under consideration when scheduling the day's itinerary (particularly when to have the lunch break). Hence my submission.
jadence··on Tell PG: Cal football game (same day/campus as Startup School) to start @ 1:30
It's not televised. I believe that ends a streak of 38 televised games (home and away) for Cal football and the first home game not televised since 2005.
jadence··on Tell PG: Cal football game (same day/campus as Startup School) to start @ 1:30
With a 1:30 pm kick off time there won't be any conflict with crowds in terms of starting Startup School at 9am. I would, however, suggest a late lunch (at or after 1:30pm) to avoid fans and long lines at the local restaurants. The biggest problems will probably be at the end given that the game will probably end around 4:30 pm and it's generally a couple of hours before the crowds in/around campus and traffic out of Berkeley start to die down.

I'd recommend people park outside of Berkeley and BART (www.bart.gov) in.

Other notes:

- parking fines are doubled on game days

- many parking lots that are normally public lots on weekends are more expensive and/or reserved specifically for fans with season parking passes

- many streets that normally allow street parking don't allow parking on game days.

Finally - Go Bears!

jadence··on Ask HN - What's your best startup idea?
I know you're joking around but I thought I'd answer anyway. The key aspect of flights is that your "victim" isn't going anywhere. He's stuck in that seat and can't escape nearly as easily as he could if you approached him in a cafe, museum, etc.

EG - Got a startup that'll need buy in from a major wireless carrier (you're gon' change the industry like the iPhone did!) but can't get attention from any of them? Imagine what you could work if you were sitting next to the CEO of Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile on a 6 hour flight. How much would you pay for the information to get you that seat?

jadence··on Ask HN - What's your best startup idea?
Along those lines I know there is a very lucrative black (maybe more gray) market in which people will pay big money to find out flight plans of important decision makers. People paid that money so they could try to buy a ticket in the seat next to said decision maker. You've then got X hours to work a pitch.

I know this happens to execs in pro sports a lot (people trying to get sponsorship, get the leagues using their products, etc) and I imagine it happens in other industries as well.

How you make a startup/product out of this I don't know but I thought it was an interesting tidbit to share.

jadence··on Ask HN - What's your best startup idea?
... a "Jump to Conclusions" mat. You see, it would be this mat that you would put on the floor... and would have different conclusions written on it that you could jump to.
jadence··on Online Dating Advice: Exactly What To Say In A First Message
Given that they measure "success" by response rate I'm not sure I put a whole lot of faith in the below quoted analyses. Perhaps the low "success" rate is because people reply w/ an outside service that OkCupid can't track?

"#4 – Don’t try to take it outside. Obviously, all successful OkCupid relationships outgrow our in-site messaging feature. But an offer to chat or of an email address right off the bat is a sure turn off. One of the things online dating has going for it is its relative anonymity, and if you start chipping away at that too early, you’ll scare the other person off."

jadence··on 2009 Startup School, October 24 at Berkeley
FYI - Cal Football has a home game that day. Parking is going to be difficult to come by and expensive. Public transportation will also be pretty full so plan accordingly.

jadence··on YC startups unite to drive nail into the coffin of Internet Explorer 6
I know employees at Cost Plus World Market headquarters are stuck using IE6.
jadence··on iPhone’s Latest Hit App: A Sex Offender Locator
IMO the sex offenders list is crap as it lumps a large range of offenses together.

Caught urinating in public? Had consensual sex at age 17 with your high school sweetheart^? If you got caught doing either one you end up on the same list as the child molesters and rapists. Lucky you.

And the sad thing is I don't see this changing anytime soon as any politician who tries to tackle this will be clobbered by his opponents for being lenient on those evil sex offenders.

^Given sexual trends among teens I'm guessing a ridiculous portion (I'd venture over 80%) of the people in America should be on the sex offenders list.

jadence··on You've Got Blackmail: The AOL Account That Wouldn't Die
I have no idea how it'll help and suspect the author is confused about what a fraud alert actually does.

A fraud alert is simply a notice put on your credit files that creditors (before loaning you money, giving you a credit card, etc) will see. Creditors are supposed to call the number you listed before extending credit to make sure you actually requested it. A fraud alert's primary use to prevent identity theft and not to dispute items on your credit report.

jadence··on What Is a Master’s Degree Worth?
[note: off topic but it's still somewhat relevant to this crowd as it's an example of how not to implement print view]

That's a rather annoying "print view." http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/30/what-is-a-...

You gotta go through the article and click on all the "Read more…" links to get the full text before printing and it still has the "Resources" links (as if I can click on them after I've printed out the article, which I'm presumably going to do if I'm looking at the article in print mode).

I expect more from the newspaper that gives such nifty charts, various APIs, etc.

jadence··on How Safeway Slashed Its Healthcare Costs, While Keeping Quality High
My insurer (Anthem Blue Cross) will give me prices if I give them a procedure code and a billing zip code.

Getting the procedure code and a billing zip code is another story though. When I call hospitals and doctor offices they often have no clue and will refer me to their billing department who then claims they need more information in order to know what procedure code and billing zip they'll be needing. Call back the hospital and doctor office to get the information that the billing office says they need and 'round and 'round we go. It's very frustrating.

jadence··on Changes at YouTube - Phasing You out of Youtube (vid)
Wow. The creator of this video has a rather large sense of entitlement.
jadence··on Is one diet as good as another?
Sorry trapper but your entire post here wreaks of someone trying to "bully" the reader. You throw out a lot of esoteric terms w/ little to back it up.

That said - are we even arguing about the same thing? You responded to my post that addressed the "eating at night" myth and you're going off on effects that food has "over the next few months."

jadence··on Is one diet as good as another?
Sorry but the body doesn't burn just-eaten food that quickly. If you eat at 2pm instead of 11pm you're still going to be burning those calories when you go to bed at night. Ask any serious runner and they'll tell you that they do their carbo-loading the night before a race and that all those carbs still make a huge difference 12+ hours after consumption.

Unless you somehow burned through all your carb stores before bed you're not going to be burning much fat while you sleep. Plus sleeping itself burns very few calories so don't expect to be melting away pounds by sleeping.

and besides, who cares if you're hungry when you go to bed, you're asleep!

I think you hit on the biggest reason why this so-called diet works. People don't notice their hunger when they're asleep and thus less likely to cheat.

jadence··on Is one diet as good as another?
Yes, it is a myth. Calories in versus calories out. It's as simple as that.

There may be some small differences in how efficiently your body digests food at night than during the day but 2pm vs. 11pm is an incredibly minor optimization. It's like optimizing your array structures when you should be using a hash. The only timing optimization I've heard of which has some scientific backing is the glycogen/metabolic window thought that's exploited for those trying to gain weight.

I think the reason you often hear about the "don't eat at night" advice is that it's easy to do which is what people want to hear. Most people will fallaciously rather follow the advice of "Eat ice cream at 2pm instead of 11pm" than the advice of "Don't eat ice cream at all."

The reason that "don't eat at night" will sometimes appear to work is that people will naturally eat less when you cut out a huge block of time in which they can't eat.

jadence··on Invitation Only
This is/was already done to some degree. I don't have all the details but relatives on both sides of my family had to prove "their value" when applying to enter the United States (from China). The application process is a long (on the order of years) and tedious one with no guarantees.

A bit off-topic: Some of you may recall the hoopla in California a couple years ago regarding granting amnesty/citizenship to illegal immigrants who had been in the country long enough. One angle the media did little reporting on is how upset those who played by the rules and went/were going through the actual immigration process were that they were being bumped by those who broke the rules and entered the country illegally. It's not all that different from how financially-responsible people are upset today that the irresponsible receiving bailouts.

jadence··on One free interaction
Yup. I do the same though I only end up annoying myself, much like the above select-and-deselect-text posters when they're on nytimes.com, when I'm on the scratch buffer and I keep getting the "File to save in:" prompt.
jadence··on U.S. jobless claims surge to 26-year high (highest since October 1982)
I won't refute you on that (someone once posted a article here on HN that discussed this) however the linked article for this thread is specifically about people filing for unemployment for the first time. Thus your point that "They stop counting a person as unemployed after they stop receiving the unemployment checks, no matter if they found a job or ran out of time" doesn't taint the stat of a 26-year high for filings for new claims.
jadence··on Adult Fast-Food Diets Tied to Too Much TV as Teen
You could say that about a lot of things that people spend a lot of time on. "Hard to cook when you're coding." "Hard to cook when you're playing soccer." "Hard to cook when you're decorating the school gym for the homecoming dance."

I'd actually argue that cooking while watching TV is pretty easy to do. I know plenty of people who do that. In fact, I'm about to head to a Super Bowl party where we'll be BBQing while watching the game.

jadence··on Don't hire a programmer if they don't code for fun
Who moderated you up here? You give away the ending of a movie and then figuratevely give me the finger with a too-bad-for-you response and you get applauded for it.

Sheesh. Would it kill you and jacquesm to put a courtesy "spoiler alert" notice at the start of your messages?

(This is all incredibly off topic so this'll be my last post on it.)

jadence··on Don't hire a programmer if they don't code for fun
Dude! Why do you have to post spoilers like that? Yeah it's far from a new release but still!

I haven't seen it yet and it's on my Hulu queue. Thanks!

Argh!
