jacobsimon··on Binance freezes withdrawals of stablecoin USDC as investors pull $2B
Not trying to make excuses for any of these companies. I'm just saying, in the abstract, there are lots of reasons why an end user would want a stablecoin besides "avoiding regulations". Even if it weren't pegged to a national currency, there is value in having a digital currency that limits its volatility. Pegging to another currency is a shortcut for doing that w/o needing decentralized monetary policy.
jacobsimon··on Binance freezes withdrawals of stablecoin USDC as investors pull $2B
Stablecoins have totally valid use cases in the crypto ecosystem that don’t involve skirting regulations. People want something that isn’t volatile. It takes days to deposit and withdraw actual USD from exchanges and requires centralized entities that charge fees (or are totally untrustworthy as we’ve seen). Contracts and dapps can hold and interact with USDC to create useful applications that aren’t just speculative investing.
jacobsimon··on Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder
If we did, you wouldn't be able to tell ;)

I think we have made a lot of progress in the area of computer graphics - most action movies you watch now contain some level of CG characters or digital makeup that is very believable.

But really the point I was trying to make is that people become more discerning the closer something comes to being human-like, and that feeling masks the reality of the progress.

jacobsimon··on Using ChatGPT as a Co-Founder
Totally, maybe we’re in the uncanny valley of AI intelligence and people are now over-reacting to small inaccuracies.
jacobsimon··on Why do we call it “boilerplate code?”
I think stereo vision predates the usage in sound, and refers more to the 3D depth perception of shapes that it allows. Stereography was invented sometime in the mid 1800s [1]. Stereo sound similarly is meant to give a more realistic perception of sound in space compared to mono.

jacobsimon··on Quantum winter is coming
Huh I’m not an expert but doesn’t AWS already offer quantum computing as a service?

jacobsimon··on State of CSS
Container queries is a big deal in my opinion! This has always been an obstacle for designing responsive components - they only respond to the size of the screen so designing them for use in different places in your app is difficult.

But the implementation they’ve chosen with named containers is not my favorite. I’d prefer one that is simply based on the parent component or the closest component with a container attribute set; this would work better alongside tools like Tailwind and CSS-in-JS.

Edit: Nvm after reading more, it looks like the container name is optional and the default behavior is what I described - excellent!

jacobsimon··on A new doorway to the brain
Love the progress in brain imaging. Similar to fMRI, this seems to be focused on identifying blood flow to different areas which seems useful for a lot of diagnostic/medical purposes. I’m personally doubtful that the use cases at the end of the article like brain-computer interfaces are well-suited to the technology though, since it can’t measure neural activity as directly as electrodes.

One thing it doesn’t discuss is the latency of the observed signals relative to brain activity — in MRI there is a 5-6 second delay due to the time it takes for brain activity to translate into blood flow and oxygen signals, whereas electrical activity is in real time.

jacobsimon··on Wildfire smoke is exposing millions of Americans to extreme pollution levels
This is a great breakdown of stats on life expectancy over time including child mortality: https://ourworldindata.org/life-expectancy

Life expectancy has improved a lot in general, but less dramatically at old ages.

jacobsimon··on The self-fulfilling prophecy of React
Is setState() that bad? If you want the magic of vue’s reactive state, you can just use Proxy which is what it does under the hood. Not sure why React hasn’t standardized that but /shrug
jacobsimon··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
Or make your SEO good so that when people inevitably Google search, your result is first.
jacobsimon··on Supabase Series B
Wow I had no idea Parse was still around and open source, I thought Facebook shut it down. It certainly was very popular back in the day!
jacobsimon··on Build your own web framework
Sorry but that’s a pretty un-generous take on the state of the Node ecosystem. There’s so many mature solutions for all of these problems and tons of great examples online.

That said, I agree that in the Vercel/Next universe, everything on the backend seems to be an afterthought.

jacobsimon··on Layoffs Create a Vacuum for Fraud
Isn’t this the plot of Office Space?
jacobsimon··on Why do so many brands change their logos and look like everyone else?
Another important point not mentioned yet: Rebrands are rarely done internally.

Companies hire external brand design agencies, and they tend to hire a few of the same well-known ones, which also set the trends for the rest of the industry.

- 72andsunny (Dropbox, Instagram, eBay)

- Moving Brands (Netflix, Asana, BBC, Eventbrite)

- Red Antler (Casper, Alto, etc)

jacobsimon··on Fresh is a new full stack web framework for Deno
This was my thought, too. In reality, client side rendering today is “cheap” because you typically put a CDN in front of your application to serve static resources and scripts, and your backend only serves the API requests (if needed). Rendering everything on the backend means by contrast that you’re limited to the capacity of your server and the latency based on where it’s located.
jacobsimon··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
Interesting! This might be my favorite type of energy now :D
jacobsimon··on Chasing utopian energy: How I wasted 20 years of my life
Sounds too good to be true! Is geothermal truly renewable? Or is it just abundant enough that it would last us for thousands of years? I wonder if there are other long term side effects of releasing heat from the core.

jacobsimon··on Lexical – a web text editor framework that powers Facebook
Hey on my business’s website we currently use draft.js for our user discussion product and we convert the user input to markdown for storing in our db. How hard would it be to switch to Lexical and does it support rendering from markdown syntax? Do you recommend any other approaches for safe storage and rendering of rich text? Thanks!
jacobsimon··on Coffee drinking linked to lower mortality risk, new study finds
Yeah this is the main question everyone should be researching. Basically does caffeine (in)tolerance predict health issues.
jacobsimon··on Coffee drinking linked to lower mortality risk, new study finds
Oh really? I’ll search for that but if you have the link please share

jacobsimon··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
Come on. You must realize VS Code and basically every website you use collects telemetry data, which is rarely for anything nefarious except product improvements. If GitHub/Microsoft had released this product, would you be raising the same concerns?
jacobsimon··on How to become good at system design?

jacobsimon··on Brian Kernighan's Home Page
I was a lowly CS undergrad at Princeton, never even took Kernighan’s class but spoke with him a few times in passing. On graduation day, my father was standing around in the back and struck up a conversation with him, oblivious that this was the legend of the department. Yet even so, they had a great conversation and Kernighan even slipped in some nice things to say about me. So on top of everything, he’s also an extraordinarily kind and humble man.
jacobsimon··on The Beverly Clock
We’ve had one of the Atmos clocks mentioned in the article at our father’s house for years. It counts up to the year 3000, but I imagine it will need to be serviced a few times before then.
jacobsimon··on Gmail’s fake loading indicator (2020)
Surprised this isn’t higher. Loading bars are universally faked on the web.
jacobsimon··on The brain can recall and reawaken past immune responses
That’s a really good question. I didn’t read the full paper yet, but I think one of the important discoveries here is that there’s a direct causal relationship from brain->immune system in the first place that would allow them to trigger specific responses.

It’s also probably hard to target those same specific neurons without first triggering the immune response since that’s part of their method for finding them.
