jacobr··on Take Naps at Work
Is it uncommon in your country to have kitchen areas where you can prepare/heat food and eat it? At work maybe half of the office bring or buy food and eat together. Some make a quick salad. Others eat together at a restaurant or alone.
jacobr··on Pinboard Acquires Delicious
I remember being very passionate about "folksonomy", tag clouds, microformats and things related to the delicious community. I wonder if that lived on on some corner of the Internet.
jacobr··on The state of JavaScript modules
> the amount of tools you have to pull in these days just get some single page interaction going...

I just started contributing to an open source project with a lot of JavaScript without any modules or even IIFE wrappers, everything is global. Just 1 year ago I would solve the problem with a new build system but now I'll just gradually introduce ES6 features, and I will not do any module refactorings because in 6 months I can probably just introduce standard modules without any build step.

When modules ship, 90% of what you need for a SPA will be available natively in browsers. If you are building a complex product, complexity will naturally increase, with build steps for various reasons.

jacobr··on Chrome Won
Some developers don't have python in their toolbox/skill set. The alternatives in many cases are Electron or nothing (due to higher development costs etc). The right tool for the job is not always that which gives you the best product, but what gives you A product in the shortest time.
jacobr··on I spent two weeks delivering for Uber Eats and made $4.40 per hour
The alternative is for Uber to invest in increased productivity, just like other industries. Making each worked hour give more return. They could supply better bikes, as another poster suggested less downtime for drivers, better algorithms to cut the length of the routes, higher fees for customers... I'm sure there are clever people that can figure it out.
jacobr··on I spent two weeks delivering for Uber Eats and made $4.40 per hour
It would be better if they offered the job with reasonable wages and conditions. If consumers are not willing to pay enough for Uber to be able to offer this, they have a poor business model or are in the wrong market.

You could say the same about any regulation, if you cannot manufacture something at a reasonable price without polluting more than allowed, you need to change your prices or adjust your business model.

jacobr··on I spent two weeks delivering for Uber Eats and made $4.40 per hour
> Between the vast numbers who won't even go for the interview and the fact that the few that do tend to wash out after a month, uber eats will soon find themselves with no drivers at all.

A significant number of the drivers are recently arrived immigrants with little chance to get another job. They definitely don't read Breakit. They are not in a situation to pick-and-choose. They might get by on a small wage by working crazy hours and sharing a cheap apartment with dozens of others in the same situation.

jacobr··on Opera is Reborn
Very much so. Google is less dominant in many markets where Opera is strong, so the bidding between Google and the local search engines is probably tough.
jacobr··on Mini.css – Minimal, responsive, style-agnostic CSS framework
> Check any reasonable site from youtube to amazon, they download ~ 1MB gzipped data on load and do just fine.

What's important is how much you need to download to be able to do the first meaningful interaction. Downloading 5mb of JavaScript and CSS for your cool dashboard graph might be fine, but you should not need to download that much just to get some reasonable layout or have a look at the possible menu alternatives.

jacobr··on Prettier 1.0
What's the best way to add this to an existing project?

Going through all code at once would destroy all relevant vcs history and git blame. Maybe before each substantial edit on a file first run it through prettier and then make your real changes in a separate commit?

jacobr··on TypeScript at Slack
Last time I tried TypeScript we ended up abandoning it after having mismatches between dependencies and TS definitions.

We had to postpone upgrading libraries to wait for definition updates or write and maintain them ourselves. This was in the early stage of a project though, we needed to get a quick first version out in 2 weeks and it just wasn't worth the hassle.

Has this situation improved - I understand typings are no longer installed with a 3rd party tool/registry?

jacobr··on Introducing Twitter Lite
Google might have helped out to promote the PWA technology which they are pushing hard.
jacobr··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2017)

jacobr··on Modern JavaScript for Ancient Web Developers
Do you generally run long running tasks such as a dev server with Make?
jacobr··on Linting HTML using CSS
The button element should be used for interaction that is not navigation to a different url.
jacobr··on No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problems
My oldest son quite often comes up with a third, better alternative. The fact that I consider and sometimes accept them might make some other situations harder, because obviously he often cannot understand more complex situations and then there is a conflict. Saying no to a perfectly reasonable suggestion (because it wasn't mine) might teach him to never argue, but I wouldn't want that.
jacobr··on Ask a Female Engineer: Employees with Kids and Relationships at Work
How about a dont-work-when-your-child-is-sick policy.
jacobr··on The Anti-Helicopter Parent’s Plea: Let Kids Play
Also, all kids are different. Sometimes I get judgemental against some parents putting their kids in front of an iPad in the restaurant or wherever. But maybe that's the only way for them to ever get out and eat at all, what if their kids have some concentration issues, I have no idea.
jacobr··on Sam Altman: “YC not going to fire someone over support of a candidate”
Marxist philosophies have been implemented in many European countries in the form of social democracy.
jacobr··on Sweden Wants to Fight Disposable Culture with Tax Breaks for Repairing Old Stuff
Water has to be processed and transported to your house, and then heated. A modern dish washer is more efficient than hand washing dishes because it uses less water.
jacobr··on Teen Creates “Sit with Us” App for Bullied Kids
> Can you imagine telling a victim of a mugging (or worse) to "just ignore them" the next time it happens?

Isn't this standard advice, to just give them your money and avoid escalating the situation?

jacobr··on Teen Creates “Sit with Us” App for Bullied Kids
This feels reasonable if it's systematic bullying, and maybe I'd give the same advice in that situation, but in general I don't think it's a great strategy for a kid to always push back "just as hard" because it will escalate each argument they get in.
jacobr··on Advertiser-friendly content guidelines
> Content that is considered "not advertiser-friendly" includes, but is not limited to:

> Controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies, even if graphic imagery is not shown

jacobr··on Stop Treating Marijuana Like Heroin
I find it reasonable to warn about the risks of unhealthy usage of both WoW and cannabis, without criminalizing either.
jacobr··on Employee benefits at Basecamp
But the school is also closed during the summer? Where I live there is free daycare for kids up to 12 (?) or so during holidays, but many people take some vacation days during the year and maybe 3-4 weeks during the summer.
jacobr··on Ask HN: Why don't companies hire programmers for fewer hours per day?
I work 80% and have been doing so for the last 5 years. In Sweden you have that right until your child turns 8 years old (so until they've finished their first year of school), with reduced pay of course. This lets you be available to pick up your kids from school when they still have very short school days.

I rarely play ping pong or do non-work related stuff at work now, because I feel I want to make the most of my working hours. I go home around the time I often get a slight down time around 15:00 anyway, so I feel I'm very focused when I'm at work.

I think I will have a hard time adjusting back to 100% when my youngest child turns 8, but I know people who have negotiated down their working hours to play more video games so it will probably be fine.

jacobr··on PR converts the Three.js codebase to ES2015 modules
eslint-plugin-import found several bugs for us when we enabled it. Can't recommend it enough. https://github.com/benmosher/eslint-plugin-import
jacobr··on React: Mixins Considered Harmful
Component state is hardly considered harmful. What has given you that impression?
jacobr··on Trust in Government Is Collapsing Around the World
> Try to imagine a USA where someone from Texas would not be able to move to LA or NYC or the other way around. Border controls against movement on every state-border. If you find that hard to imagine try to come up with a really good argument why it should be any different within the EU.

What makes you compare the EU to the US, and not say, the Americas?

jacobr··on Lists of JavaScript methods which you can use natively
