jacobr··on Mobile-First CSS: Is It Time for a Rethink?
I wouldn't say it's wrong in the examples above - I want to have the same padding on both sides, and not the padding + scrollbar gutters on one side.

There's also `scrollbar-gutter: stable` to always reserve space for the scrollbar. It's not supported in Safari, but macOS uses overlay scrollbars by default anyway so it doesn't really matter.

I’ve found that a significant number of media queries can be replaced by fluid rules instead. E.g. instead of setting padding and full width on a container for mobile and a fixed width on desktop, do this for all breakpoints

  width: min(calc(100wv - 2rem), 80rem)
Instead of resizing text for different breakpoints, use

  font-size: clamp(2rem, 4vw + 1rem, 3rem);
etc. No media queries needed. I also find it easier to reason about since you don’t have different rules applying in different circumstances.
jacobr··on Twenty years of my blog
It’s strange with people you’ve followed for such a long time but never interacted with. I remember that wedding photo with the falcon, and Lanyrd. Then we had different interests for a while, but the last few years I’ve truly enjoyed your perspectives on Twitter, your blog, and lately the piece on architecturenotes.
jacobr··on What ID3v2 could have been
No mention of my favorite tags TSOT and TSOA (if I recall correctly). Let’s you specify the sort title, for example “Cure, The” instead of “The Cure” and “Bowie, David” instead of “David Bowie”.

The amount of time I spent on getting these right in my collection…

jacobr··on Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact
No, manufacturing is across multiple locations globally. We’re building a battery manufacturing plant in Sweden with Northvolt, expected to bring 3000 jobs.
jacobr··on Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact
I work for Volvo Cars. It’s not in any way a charity but I believe my work has a mostly positive impact.

Among traditional auto makers were one of the most serious and committed to full electrification by 2030 and 50% electric cars by 2025. We have the same schedule for selling cars online only, so software is not just a cost center or marketing channel, it’s the future of the company.

Volvo Cars creates a significant number of well paying jobs in manufacturing with good working conditions, benefiting local communities. For example, all employees across the globe, across manufacturing and offices, were recently given 24 weeks of paid parental leave (https://www.volvocars.com/intl/about/family-bond/).

We’re hiring in multiple locations https://jobs.volvocars.com

jacobr··on Top stablecoins shed $7B in May as traders redeem tokens en masse
It’s a very niche use case. For most use cases, you can send money perfectly fine using a credit card or Apple Pay etc. To receive money you can open a Shopify store or whatever comes next. To send money to relatives in countries with little infrastructure, there’s already Hawala, Western Union, etc. Not perfect but will be incrementally improved.
jacobr··on A clean start for the web (2020)
Instead we get Web Components, where HTML is an afterthought. Only years later are we getting things like Declarative Shadow DOM. You’re always expected to write custom JS for every single component on your page, instead of doing something like “add this functionality whenever you see the `foo` attribute on any HTML element”
jacobr··on Attack campaign involving stolen OAuth tokens issued to third-party integrators
GitHub’s own Application Security product has secret scanning, allowing you an overview of secrets exposed across your entire organization.
jacobr··on GitHub incident 2022-03-23
20 PRs waiting in line for half a day to be merged is pretty annoying. We’ve had that on multiple occasions the last few weeks due to GitHub incidents.
jacobr··on Monorepos done right
As with many words, monorepos can mean different things to different people.

Some people use it for a repo where a single product is developed and typically deployed/published together, but happens to be distributed through separate packages. The Babel repository would be one example of this: https://github.com/babel/babel Many “design system monorepos” fall in this category as well.

I would say the difference between one team building a single product in one repo or many might be interesting to some, but it’s a completely different problem from a multi-product multi-team repository. At some companies this would be a single repo for all source code.

Building software like this can have a profound impact on your entire engineering culture - for the positive, if you ask me. The single-product monorepos are unlikely to have a similar impact.

jacobr··on Being visible
Is the work “writing code” or is it “solving problems for the business”? If it’s the latter, communicating with others in the organization and advocating for change in some direction (aka “politics”) is part of the work.
jacobr··on Just say no to :latest
People are mentioning that pinning versions lead to overhead in updates. These people have probably not used Renovate https://docs.renovatebot.com/

Renovate is smart enough to understand that a task such as “Update Node to v16” means updating .nvmrc files, updating FROM in Dockerfiles and engines in package.json in a single PR it creates for you.

jacobr··on I shaved 187MB off United Airlines' 439MB iOS app
I just went into airplane mode to try, and the app works fine on iOS. It shows a message about not being able to fetch new emails.
jacobr··on How the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is being built [video]
Train from Copenhagen to Hamburg goes from 4.5 to 2.5 hours. As a Swede, this makes vacations to the continent via car or train much more attractive.
jacobr··on Reddit can't build a better search engine
SEO before Google PageRank was basically submitting a site multiple times in an online form to Altavista and it would rank higher. As a teenager I automated this with the only programming language I knew, mIRC scripts.
jacobr··on How to skate a 10k
This quote is worth translating for the HN crowd. It's a typical Nils van der Poel answer, from an interview with Swedish Radio. When asked how he did it, how he could sacrifice so much for a gold medal, his answer was

"I think it's important to understand that you're not doing it for a gold medal. Regardless of which life you chose to live, you will sacrifice something, that's the way it is.

As soon as you go in one direction, you also choose to not go in all other directions at the same time. It's the basic precondition for going anywhere at all.

But on the path you take, you will experience fantastic things, even though it's uphill there will be a great view when you're at the top, and that's what makes it worth it, to be on this journey with people you love. It doesn't matter that much where the journey ends. A movie with a sad ending is also a good movie - and a movie with a nice ending makes you happy.

I'm very happy for this medal around my neck, and for getting all the way here. But why do you do it? I don't think you get to pick your dreams, they pick us. It's up to us to realize them or not, and it seems like people who try to realize their dreams are happier."

jacobr··on Staff Engineer Communities
To me it’s about giving advice and sharing experience. A senior engineer or tech lead might have a problem and I give more context, and talk about similar situations I’ve seen in the past or put them in contact with another team, but they make the call since it’s their team and their responsibility. Might be seen as “punting”, or as trust and empowering.
jacobr··on The clock does not measure time; it produces it
I’m currently reading 4000 Weeks (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54785515-four-thousand-w...), which is something as interesting as a time management book that starts with a chapter quite similar to this article - explaining how time is a social construct and that you’ll probably fail if you just try to get more things done.
jacobr··on On Leaving Facebook
Do you still ultimately do product engineering, picking tickets of a backlog, after 10 years at a FAANG if you’re not in management? Are the promotion levels mostly salary bumps?

I spend some but far from most of my time writing code, I write RFCs, documentation, code reviews and emails, but don’t really know how this compares to positions at other companies. At some places a staff engineer seems to simply be a senior engineer who’s been around for a while.

jacobr··on TypeScript Features to Avoid
The TypeScript documentation even states "In modern TypeScript, you may not need an enum when an object with as const could suffice ... The biggest argument in favour of this format over TypeScript’s enum is that it keeps your codebase aligned with the state of JavaScript, and when/if enums are added to JavaScript then you can move to the additional syntax" https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/enums.html#obje...
jacobr··on Examining the covidtests.gov architecture
It’s interesting that this is a government service in the US. That would probably not be politically possible in Sweden - there are already online stores where you can buy tests, the government would be competing with them.

We also don’t have a national postal service, it’s a deregulated market. There’s an operator owned by the state, but only 50%, the rest is owned by Denmark, so it’s unlikely it could participate in something like this without it being an open contract for all delivery companies.

jacobr··on Simple.css – A classless CSS framework
I called my classless (even though it really wasn’t, just like in politics) CSS library marcssist https://github.com/jacobrask/marcssist Barely even used it myself though, if anyone else likes bad puns feel free to steal the name
jacobr··on Is It Time for the JavaScript Temporal API?
It’s also 74 additional kb to parse and evaluate on the main thread before it can continue doing more interesting things like rendering the main content you came to the page for. On many devices (a huge number of users globally are on dirt cheap underpowered phones) this adds up to significant user experience problems.
jacobr··on Are there any good companies anymore?
Have a look at the Career Guide from 80k hours https://80000hours.org/career-planning/

jacobr··on Are there any good companies anymore?
There’s a difference between for example killing animals for sport, for food, or by not taking enough precaution to avoid it (e.g. sweeping the road for bugs before walking). The agency matters - if your salary is explicitly tied to bad outcomes, or if it happens to benefit from them, by proxy.
jacobr··on Right-to-Left Styling 101
Lack of browser support is mostly about using -start/-end suffixes, postcss would indeed be useful for this but the majority of the complexity is around requiring 2 different CSS files (ltr and rtl). I’d say with some simple aliasing with postcss you can drop that.
jacobr··on Right-to-Left Styling 101
Most sites should be able to switch to CSS Logical Properties to remove the need to flip directional properties https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/CSS_Logical...
jacobr··on Why Cloudflare Bought Zaraz
This looks amazing, can’t wait to play around with it. What’s the story around migrating from GTM? We could easily switch out `dataLayer.push` for `zaraz.track` in our internal GTM wrapper, but is there feature parity?
jacobr··on Swiping left on magnetic stripes
