I love / hate the sensation when you try to conceive that it (it including whatever includes "it", ad infinitum) has either existed forever or there was a point before anything existed.

jacobedawson··on Oatly: The New Coke?
Not to appear petty, or to give the impression that I care about internet points (full disclosure: I am and I do), but I posted this on HN with the exact same title and link 3 hours ago. Wondering how this didn't get flagged as a dupe?
jacobedawson··on Show HN: Stretchbit – your personal health coach
Would probably be useful if this could be viewed on a desktop, is that in the pipeline? IMO apps have a much higher hurdle for first checking out whether they're actually useful or not.

So it looks like we're about 2 years away from the 'Her' relationship model.
jacobedawson··on Ask HN: Best resources to learn about stock trading and investing?
I'd recommend Khan Academy - the videos there are always succinct and clear, and it's free, an incredible resource imo.

Introduction to Financial Accounting on Coursera is also great, will help to understand business valuation, read a balance sheet, etc.

The Plain Bagel on Youtube is a good investment channel, no bs.

Afaiu insulin in combination with elevated blood glucose levels specifically does lead directly to weight gain - it's like a vicious cycle in that high blood sugar = increased insulin levels = excess glucose is stored as fat.

"Lo and behold, a pile of unnecessary error conditions, cryptic errors, and lack of proper feedback.". Sounds like literally every initial experience I've had with a new language / library / framework (also, life in general tbh). Usually reduced by RTFM.

Having to still support IE 11 for most projects, I really like the following:

div { position: absolute; right: 50%; bottom: 50% transform: translate(50%, 50%); }

jacobedawson··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Would need a pretty vicious critical mass but I like the idea :)
jacobedawson··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
I've just started it - I'm about 10% of the way in and I'm really engaged - enjoying it but with a kind of mental equivalent of full-body exhaustion way after a big day at the beach - it's fun but also hard and sometimes just plain difficult. I think DFW was swimming in so many ideas & feelings that Infinite Jest was a way of letting it all come out in a Kerouacian-stream without much thought for concision.

If it helps anyone decide whether to give it a go, two recent books I read and loved were 2666 by Roberto Bolaño, and Underworld by Don DeLillo, and Infinite Jest is satisfying me in the hard-earned way they both did.

jacobedawson··on Ask HN: What fact-checking sites / sources do you use?
Thanks - good, actionable advice there. The conspiracy theories I'm seeing shared in my feeds range from "Bill Gates did it", through to "there is no virus". Often I can't help taking the bait, and I try to share high-quality, peer-reviewed information when I can - the issue is that this pandemic has hit the perfect balancing act whereby the reasonable preventative actions are also exactly what a conspiracy theory would suggest :)

I second that - great content, but terrible audio / video quality, unfortunately, which makes it less enjoyable and a bit of a struggle tbh.
jacobedawson··on Ask HN: Resources to learn basic UI layout design for React apps?
Having used both Ant and Material UI on mid-sized React projects I can say that MUI has much better documentation and flexibility, at a slight cost of having to grok their styling convention. Once you get that it's smooth sailing, with a fairly active community, a lot of intuitive components and generally hassle-free dev experience. Ant was a bit more of a struggle, personally, with less clarity in the docs and a less active (English-speaking at least) community.
jacobedawson··on Ask HN: What are you learning?
I'm doing Harvard's CS50 (2020) and working through Steven Cochan's Programming in C (4th edition) alongside it. Coming from a JavaScript / front-end background learning about pointers and manual memory management is eye-opening.

I have a coding / focus Spotify playlist of tracks that keep me focused and in the zone without being distracting. Contains a lot of ambient, deep instrumental house and ambient dub techno: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/28W4UPjme9kuIxMKjdlSMx?si=...
jacobedawson··on State projections for Covid-19
There is a very succinct explanation by Michael Osterholm [1][2] where he says that the virus is spread both by droplets & aerosols, and that sharing the same air with another person is the primary vector (that isn't intended to sound as alarmist as it probably does).

From what I understand the best prevention is to reduce face-to-face contact with other people where possible, but an N95 mask would definitely help prevent contraction in public spaces.

Of course, these measures seem extreme since ~80% of people will barely notice they are infected / have mild symptoms, but it's all about peak-load reduction.

jacobedawson··on Ant Design 4.0
Hi, that sounds great, thanks for sharing I'll check them out.
jacobedawson··on Ant Design 4.0
Having used Material UI and Ant Design for React projects recently, I found the documentation in Ant to be less clear and also didn't love the use of Less for customization of the stylesheets (vs MUI's makeStyles / css-in-js approach).

When it comes down to a UI framework docs & styling options are my main criteria, I still haven't had a play around with Semantic UI or Tailwind yet, and haven't found the 'framework to rule them all'.

Isn't this just the same scenario as we currently have, just with different underlying technology? Do coal-powered plants have additional security outside of a few private guards?

jacobedawson··on Show HN: A Hacker News for DevOps Projects
At first glance above the fold I'm not sure what the site does - I think it would make sense to hit people with your value prop straight away - "an interactive DevOps Board" doesn't tell me exactly what value I will be getting by using the site.
jacobedawson··on Calorie Counting × Meal Planning
Nice write up! I've always found it difficult to keep on top of diet (much more than exercise), so I've ended up using a collection of techniques / tools to stay on track, including a calorie-counting app, intermittent fasting, smart scale, a fitness tracker and macro-nutrient goals.

I also find actually inputting calories per meal helps me remain aware about food choices, while intermittent fasting (12pm - 8pm eating time) has drastically reduced snacking, because in those 8 hours I want filling / healthy meals rather than light (..dangerous) snacks.

I've never quite managed to routinely pre-prepare meals, now I'm inspired to have another crack at it.
